Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for an ARC of this book, in exchange for honest feedback.
I wanted to love this book, it had all of the makings of a great fall read. I love a good cozy, small town book this time of year. Add witches, even better! I just really didn’t click with any of the characters… A lot of the banter seemed overdone. The MFC was pretty much emotionally abused by her family, and then all of a sudden they were a loving family. It was just off. I did however love the vibe of the town, loved the “mystery” scenario that was incorporated, as well as a little bit of a romance happening. I also loved the pop culture references!
2.5 stars. Happy I read this, but was not exactly what I had hoped!
Really great premise, really bad execution. The writing was just...not good. The cover is super cute though - and the premise of the Gilmore Girls, but with magic is pretty accurate...the problem is that most people love the Gilmore Girls, and this book is not going to live up to those standards.
🪄This is a pretty typical “Something went wrong with the magic in a witchy small town” read. I looked it up and I think it’s actually 9th in the Myrtlewood Mysteries series.
🪄Scarlett, a rather chaotic middle child, left home ten years ago when her father passed. She hasn’t been home to Oak Haven since. She gets called back by her family when the magical town’s magic begins to degrade. All of a sudden the town has normal squirrels and not perfect weather, so you know it’s bad. 😁
🪄Scarlett also left behind Nate, another resident of Oak Haven from a well-known magical family just as they were about to cross over the “will they or won’t they” line. No surprise that when Scarlett returns to town, familiar feelings return and the slow burn begins!
🪄I did like that this small town has a spell for forgetting that means any non magical person who leaves (EVEN if they’re a resident of the town and married to a Magical resident of the town) will immediately forget the town and their life there. This added a little to the overall plot.
🪄 It does have a cute small town vibe - some interesting characters and some bizarre ones, like Louise the time witch.
🪄I really, really didn’t love the path it took at the end and it took a few stars off. The book itself didn’t totally grab me but I found myself a little disappointed with where it went. It came back together then but there was a short but significant part of the book I really didn’t love.
I do think this is good for those who love:
✨ Slow burn romance
✨ Grumpy x sunshine
✨Witchy aesthetic
✨ Cozy small town vibes
Loved this title. Amazing cosy witchy book. Easy read and wonderful characters. I needed something light to read that did not take a lot out of me as I have a lot on. The characters were chaotic and I liked how it explored female relationships.
It was a struggle for me to get through this book. I almost DNF’ed a few times but I wanted to be able to check it off my October TBR. I liked the fall vibes but I was not wowed by the plot or characters.
In Oak Haven witches lead, even those who have tried to get away.
Scarlett Melrose wants a normal life but when her family is threatened she comes back to try and help, but she has to struggle to do so.
A good story with lovely characters as well as a coming home tale.
I really wanted to like this book but instead a found it lacking. The story lost me has so much potential but something is missing.
I’m torn. Grumpy sunshine, a sloooooow burn, witches and fall vibes plus a small town are generally my wheelhouse. But while Scarlett and Nate were a powerhouse couple, Oak Haven still feels like it was pulling too hard at the Gilmore Girl heartstrings.
It has everything you want in an October read: magic, fall, gourds. It makes you want to step into Oak Haven and never leave. Cute pun-worthy business names for the town shops and lovable characters give it charm we remember from Gilmore Girls.
The family dynamic, especially if you've even been or felt like the black sheep of the family, was so relatable.
I honestly could have done with some plot and character development. It feels like there were enough loose ends left that we could see a sequel, but there were odd attempts to tie them up so it's unclear. Either way, it would not have hurt. I mean, the magician/witch rivalry? Violet's plot point? What was the plan for Scarlett? And I would love some more character development of our side characters -- we had such a large cast and so many interesting characters that could've done with more time on the page as so many had interesting backstories. The Earls, Aphra, the time witch, Zahir, Dayo ... just to name a few of the top ones.
Overall, it was a fun read and great for October. Would 10/10 recommend.
I was glad to dive into this delightful small-town witchy romance that enchants at every turn, but this time, prepare for an unexpected twist that adds an exciting layer of intrigue!
One of my new favorite witchy romances! It’s so cozy and sweet. I loved every minute of it. I think books like this one are becoming some of my favorite books
As a massive Gilmore Girls fan and lover of cozy Autumn books, I was so excited for this book. However, it unfortunately didn’t measure up. Most of the characters were not very likable. There were also way too many Gilmore Girls references. Due to this, it came off as cheesy fan fiction instead of a novel. Lastly, the end was drawn out entirely too much.
I do think the plot was great. I especially loved how the end solution tied to the story from the beginning.
Thanks to Net Galley and Avon for the ARC in exchange for a review.
I thought this was a super cute book however it was difficult for me to initially get into. I did have to put tho book down several times and come back to it.
Thank you to the publisher, netgalley and the author for allowing me to read this book!
I struggled a bit at first with this book, as I found the characters and banter a bit cheesy but overall I thought it was a cute witchy read when you’re in the mood for a light hearted book.
Really sorry but I just couldn't get into this book at all. Felt very chaotic from the jump. Felt very almost bad sitcom in way of comedy.
This one really hits all the marks! I wanted to read because it said for fans of Gilmore girls and charmed. It has romance, cozy fall vibes and witchery!
This is the perfect millennial fall read. The references were top notch - so funny and relatable. I didn't really care for the main character, she was slightly annoying. But, I did enjoy the character dynamics and the overall plot. I would love to read more by Emily!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me an advanced copy!
This book had amazing fall vibes and a cute storyline. I enjoyed that the characters were written with depth instead of having flat characters with little to no backstories. No, we got great backstories and the ability to understand the shifts, the moods and the motives.
That said, it did take me a little while to really get through this book. It didn’t pull me in but I did keep it up in order to get the witchy and fall feelings I was looking for.
This book was so cute! Perfect fall, witchy vibes. Very Gilmore Girls meets Halloweentown. While this wasn’t my favorite fall read of the year, it still had the perfect fall feels for what I was looking for.

I so wanted to love "Impractical Magic" but this book just didn't work for me. The magic came across as almost clunky, the romance felt a bit forced, the FMC a bit too into her suffering, and the villains seemed more sad than evil. The MMC deserved more than he got and the time jump was a bit silly, which is saying something considering what had come before. I am sure that this story will be loved by many - small town, witchy vibes, family banter are all excellent story elements. I, unfortunately, am one of the few.
2 stars. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for a complimentary copy of this book. These opinions are my own.
