I was thinking of this book a long time after I finished reading it. The author summons up a convincing world and a set of characters to match. Highly recommended.
In this novel, I discovered that there are four narrators. They are a soldier who tried to kill himself, a third grade immigrant boy, a social worker and a mother of a local cop. They come together in Las Vegas after a tragic shooting occurs.the important details in each of their lives are brutal and the things that happen in this novel are also what causes them to bond.
Strangely enough at times I had difficulty reading it due to the dryness of the author's writing. It was monotonous at times due to her writing style. I do think it was fairly good for a first novel.
I was privledged to receive an advanced readers copy of this gem of a novel. I am a very selective reader and was blown away by this beautifully written book. I am going back to read it a second time because of the emotional impact of the first reading. This book has so many real life moments and lessons. So poignant and sad, I cried while reading during my commute. I am really looking forward to more from Laura McBride. Well done.
