This collection of short stories shows why Elly Griffiths is one of the best genre writers of our day. From stories featuring regular characters like Ruth Galloway and Harbinder Kaur to classic twist-ending tales, nearly every piece is a winner.
I am a huge Elly Griffiths fan but not so much on short stories. However, I enjoyed these. Short snippets of some familiar characters and some could be developed into an entire book. Easy reading to pick up and put down b
I didn’t realize this was going to be a collection of mostly stories about Christmas. I do not love her Ruth character so I was disappointed so many stories focused on her. Enjoy the short stories about Italy were fun and seem fresh.. characters were new to me, but I know they appear in her other series. I’ve mostly read the Harbinder books. I was surprised that she said that Harbinder was a common name because it’s not especially for women. I would’ve thought she would’ve noticed that by now since she wrote the story after the other Harbinder books. I would’ve enjoyed this more if I was a fan of the Ruth books I find that character very dated and strange.
I received a free copy of, The Man in Black, by Elly Griffiths, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This book has many short stories, across different genres. This was an interesting read, so many different stories, and new and old characters. This book has something for everyone.
These short stories give an introduction to some of the main characters from the author's novels: Dr. Ruth Galloway, Harbinder Kaur, Max Mephisto, Justice Jones and others. These are an assortment of mysteries, paranormal, unsolved justice and a few endearing tales. Quick and enjoyable reads which whet the appetite to delve into more of these characters stories.
Thank you NetGalley and Harper Collins for the opportunity to read this e-galley of "The Man in Black".
It was nice to have a little something from Elly. Would like a full book. Several stories were familiar. ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for a fair review.
I enjoyed reading these stories, particularly those about characters I'm already familiar with (I've read all of Griffiths books) but I really do prefer her novels. I'm not a short story person in general but I made an exception because I like the author and the characters so much. Still, short stories just leave me unsatisfied!
I can’t get enough Elly Griffiths. This book of short stories had visits from my favorite characters and some new characters that I loved getting to know. All the stories were written in her tautly strung suspenseful style, and I was very sad to reach the end.
This collection of very short stories was entertaining to me, but is likely only for readers already familiar with Griffiths' books. The stories featuring characters from her three series were most interesting to me because I feel like they're already my friends, but I also enjoyed the others. Most of the stories are quite interior to the protagonists' perspectives, which I suppose is characteristic of the author's work and I quite enjoyed that. Thanks for the sneak peek of this one!
Charming. All in all not a bad selection of short stories-only one that I skipped. The characters are “family” if you will from Elly Griffiths books and while I am sad the Ruth series ended this selection gave you a bit of the “ongoing” life of the characters. Most enjoyable.
Thanks to Elly Griffiths and Mariner Books for this digital ARC.
As a years-long fan of Elly's writing, this was an absolute treat. This collection of short stories provides new light on some of her best characters, Justice, Harbinder, Max, and Ruth. Even if you have never read Elly Griffiths before, try these amazing short stories to help you get a feel for her writing and a view of her vibrant characters!
