This was a fun, suspenseful story. Definitely agree with the others about Stepford wives vibes. The mystery was done really well, and it kept wanting to stay up late reading. I really enjoyed the audiobook narrator. Will definitely be recommending this book to everyone!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for granting me free access to the advanced digital copy of this book.
The blurb is spot on when it comes to the new church that just arrived into the small town and is trying to put down roots. I certainly got the Stepford Wives vibe and it was creepy. This one certainly amped up the mystery and I was honestly shocked at the discovery of the murdered body. I kept flip flopping on my guess as to who was behind it. Certainly a very engaging and good mystery. The narrator, Jennifer Jill Araya did a wonderful job portraying Mira and the many emotions that Mira felt throughout the book. This one opened up some about her mom, but still leaves things unknown. I can’t wait to find out what will happen between Mira and her mom.
It’s tough to determine how to class these books in terms of what subgenre of Mystery they belong in, and thus hard to rate them as well. The series is kind of a blend of standard cost mystery and something akin to the Stephanie Plum books, though these are subtler and less zany.
I didn’t like this installment as well as the last, largely because the crime felt a touch too close to the serious side for this type of mystery and for the series’ irreverent tone, and there’s less charming anecdotal content here as well.
That said, these continue to be well-plotted for their sub genre, and Mira is likable and legitimately funny without resorting to the schticky kind of humor common to these types of books that tends to get obnoxious.
I like the month-by-month theme of the series as well, and look forward to the next installment.
I thought it was good. It is paet of a series and you could tell right from the get go so I went and got the rest of the series first because I dont think it works very well as a standalone.
The characters are great and the pace is brilliant. I love books with quirky characters and thats what will keep me going with the series.
The plot was decent and the narrator was great.
4 stars
I can’t get enough of Mira and Battle Lake, Minnesota. Every book is a new adventure, another look into the community. I’m not ready to leave Battle Lake, but in this book Mira is 😩
I’ve been listening to these books on audio, and they have been the most entertaining thing I have heard in a while. My 17 year old daughter, just happened to be around when I was listening to August Moon, and was immediately pulled into the story. We laughed together, yelled at the characters, and tried to figure out the mystery. It’s such a great cozy mystery, with romcom aspects, that any age enjoys it. Listening to the story, with the narrator giving the quirky characters voices to match their personalities, really makes the whole book.
As usual, the ending leaves you wanting more. After all the dust has settled, the mystery solved, Mira is faced with new challenges and opportunities. I personally hope she never leaves Battle Lake. It has become her home, as much as she is fighting it.
Thank you to NetGalley, Brilliance Publishing & Jess Lourey for the audio galley of August Moon.
I'm sold on this series. I absolutely LOVE it & have told Jess as much on IG.
The one with the cult. This installment features Mira & crew going toe-to-toe with The New Millennium Bible Church that has come to town & started wreaking havoc. The rest of Battle Lake is up to its regular antics as well. Jess is KILLING me on the Mira & Johnny romance, though! I have a feeling that she is going to drag that out until the very end.
Ready for September Mourn!
