I really didn't think another series could come close to the well-plotted fun of Osman's Thursday Murder Club books. This came really close! The character are fantastic, it's fast paced, and contains Osman's levity. My favorite part is the relationship between Amy and her father-in-law, Steve. Their relationship is fully of love, trust, and support. I look forward to seeing what is next for this duo!
Delightful. If you enjoy the Thursday Murder Club series, you’ll love this one as well. Always a pleasure to read an Osman book, it’s the literary equivalent of a comforting cup of tea.
We Solve Murders is a break from Osman's popular series Thursday Murder Club and is quite the worldwide adventure! It took me some time to get to know this whole new cast of characters but they do grow on you as you get to know them - I especially love Rosie - and, much like his other mysteries, you end up loving even the "bad guys". The story is interesting and fun to read, the mystery had me guessing right until the end. I'm looking forward to seeing if this is the beginning of a new series!
Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read the ARC of this book.
Richard Osman has created another cast of quirky and lovable characters with this departure from the Thursday Murder Club. I fell immediately in love with Steve Wheeler, with his kindness and intellect and powers of observation, as well as with his devotion to keeping his life quiet. It was so much fun to see him pushed outside his comfort zone, and then into a new one! I was also charmed by the relationship between Steve and his dynamic daughter-in-law Amy, as they navigated this adventure together. What a terrific set-up for this story and hopefully more to come. The plot of this book felt much more zany and frenetic than his other books, so it took me a little while to get used to, and I had to remind myself that I love it when authors try something new, no matter how badly I want to stay in their other, well-loved worlds!) As always, it's the characters who carry the day, and Osman is a master at that.
Richard Osman has done it again! I read We Solve Murders in one sitting. He blend of humor and action, along with his characters, makes for such an enjoyable read.
Damn you, Richard Osman. I was not planning on starting another series seeing as how I'm perpetually behind on the ones I'm already reading, but I suppose I'll add We Solve Murders to my list. Throw some humor into a thriller and it gets me every time.
But, seriously, how have I not read anything by Osman before? I loved this book. It's brilliant. It's action-packed. It's hilarious. I want Rosie D'Antonio to be my new best friend.
It's a little weird at first. I mean, Amy and Steve are very, very close for being in-laws. I've been married for over fifteen years now and I've never once called my father-in-law on the phone just to chat, much less teamed up for … *gesticulates wildly* … all of the shenanigans that Amy and Steve manage to get into in this novel. They're really a fantastic pair, though, and their obvious affection for each other really makes the story. Well, that and Rosie D'Antonio.
Rosie is witty and hilarious and the the type of old woman that I aspire to be someday (complete with private island). And, really, all of the characters are a lot of fun, from mysterious bad guy (and ChatGPT-enthusiast) François Loubet to Eddie, the hitman with a creative side hobby.
The mystery itself is solid. I figured out the identity of “Joe Blow” pretty early on, but otherwise it was all a complete surprise. I really liked how low-key the climax was considering the frenetic pace of the rest of the story. Nothing got blown up, nothing too outrageous happened, it was just “oh, hey, we've figured this out …” and then everyone goes on with their lives.
The last chapter is obviously a set up for the books to follow, and I am totally here for it. And it goes without saying that I need to pick up some more Richard Osman books in the meantime.
My overall rating: 4.7 stars, rounded up. If you like witty thrillers with humor and heart, definitely consider giving this one a read.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Pamela Dorman Books for providing me with an advance copy of this book to review. Its expected publication date is September 17, 2024.
This is the first volume in a new series by the author of he Thursday Murder Club mysteries (one of my favorites). This one is centered on two characters. Steve , a widower, is happy with his low key life. He has a side gig as an investigator (mostly finding lost pets) and a regular trivia ight at the pub. Amy is Steve's daughter-in-law. She and Steve are close. He worries about her dangerous job for a private security firm (mostly keeping the rich and famous alive). Something is not right with the firm where Amu works - their clients keep getting killed, sometimes in the vicinity of large amounts of cash. Is it a rival firm, money launderers, internal sabotage? When Amy becomes a suspect she calls on Steve for help. And her eccentric rich author client tags along. This is a great read, complex and fun with an interesting villain.
The set up for a new series is always exciting and I loved “The Thursday Murder Club” series. I had very high expectations for this one!!
I thought this novel was a lot of fun and enjoyed getting to know the main characters that will be the regulars in this new series.
Amy Wheeler had a traumatic childhood. There was one thing that she did develop through all of her upheavals - that is how to defend herself!! She has put these talents to good use in her current job. She is working for a unique security company that deals with high risk and elite clients. Amy has now learned how to defend her clients very well. Her current case is an author who has been threatened by a Russian oligarch.
Rosie D’Antonio has been an author for decades. She wrote something about a mobster who was very unhappy with the way he was presented in her book. She has been threatened and so is on her private island - trying to stay out of sight and protected. Amy keeps close to her side and gets to know her - things are going along pretty well until . . . .Amy finds out that she is also a target. Some of her clients from the company have met an untimely and gruesome death.
Will Amy be framed for these deaths? How will she keep herself and Rosie safe?
They decide to leave the island together as it’s no longer a safe haven.
When things start to get dicey with multiple attempts on her life, Amy turns to the one person who she trusts - and has the skills to help them. She calls Steve, her father-in-law,
Steve Wheeler is a retired English detective who has settled into a quiet life in a small village. He likes spending time with his new buddies at the pub and his cat is his company at home.
Once Steve joins the group the action really ramps up!!
I enjoyed the action and the plot is very clever. My only fault with the book was the amount of ancillary characters! I started writing them down when I got confused - some also go by different names - I kept going back through the book to keep them straight.
I know that this series will continue to get better now that we have the MC’s developed. It will be fun seeing what else they get into!
This was a buddy read with Carolyn, be sure to read her wonderful review.
I received an ARC of this novel from the punisher through NetGalley. It was my pleasure to read and review this title.
Amy Wheeler works as private security but she suddenly finds herself as a suspect in several murders. She enlists her father-in-law, Steve, a retired cop, to help clear her name and untangle a very large knot. Full of quirky characters and seemingly endless twists and turns. A fun new series (I hope) from Osman.
Richard Osman is a favorite, auto-read author of mine and WE SOLVE MURDERS proved why. This story was the perfect blend of lovable characters, laugh-out-loud moments, and a page-turning plot. No one can bring characters to life quite like Osman! Rosie is a new favorite character of mine, right up there with Joyce. A wonderful new series, and I will continue to read everything Osman writes. How does he write such wonderful books so quickly? As a reader, I'm grateful he does, because I'm always so sad when I come to the end of one of his books. Cannot wait for the next in this series and the THURSDAY MURDER CLUB series!
This book was *chef's kiss* a delight to read! I can't wait for everyone I know to read it, so I can talk about it with others. The characters were a joy to spend time with - in fact, I didn't want the book to end!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Anyone who loved the Thursday Murder club series, or cozy mysteries in general, should rejoice that Osman has a new book out. Filled with dynamic, fun characters and an engrossing mystery, what more could you ask for? I loved all the characters and their relationships, especially Steve and Amy. I really hope there is more to come with these characters, as I am looking forward to seeing Adam more and how his relationship with Steve will evolve, especially once they begin talking more about Debbie. This book had so much heart and was so fun, I look forward to recommending it in the fall!
Maybe Osman just isn't for me anymore (I did love the first two books in Thursday Murder Club). While the book was quick paced, and I did end up finishing it, I personally never felt fully invested. Honestly it just felt a bit annoying reading about this cast of characters that really never made sense in the ways in which they work together and the case itself.
Fans of Osman’s Thursday Murder Club series are not going to be disappointed by the start of his new series. It has everything they have come to love: a cast of idiosyncratic characters to fall in love with, a twisty plot with plenty of action, all served with Osman’s trademark humour and heart-warming moments.
The main characters include:
- Amy Wheeler:</b> private security officer and action woman, bodyguard to the rich and famous, tough, smart and dedicated, happily married (to Adam who is elsewhere for most of the novel)
- Steve Wheeler: Amy’s father-in-law, ex cop and PI who really doesn’t like to be outside his local comfort zone, is close to Amy, talking to her most days
- Rosie D’Antonio: feisty, flamboyant, aging, but in no way faded, author who Amy is hired to protect from a Russian chemical arms manufacturer who she based a character on in her last book (oops!)
- Eddie Flood: a hired killer, who does a lot more travelling than he expected
- Francois Loubet: not his real name, posing as a posh Englishman, the man pulling the strings and conspiring against Amy
This was so much fun. The plot was clever, at times complex and not at all realistic, but hugely entertaining. At times it was hard to remember who all the minor characters were but they are all so delightful (or delightfully inept) that I didn’t mind scrolling back to refresh my memory. Steve and Amy made a perfect pairing, despite Steve’s hate of travel and missing his weekly trivia quiz, and Rosie is just fabulous and stole the show. Osman’s afterword also makes for entertaining reading.
One of the best books I have read this year. I was nervous going in that it wouldn't hold a candle to the Thursday Murder Club favorites. Now I have new favorites in Steve, Amy, and Rosie. I was caught up in this one pretty quickly and it did not disappoint. With the action, the story, and the characters, I believe this one will be a big hit. I already can't wait for the next one. I am recommending to all readers - no matter what is your favorite genre. I look forward to what is next from Richard Osman!
Amy is a highly effective bodyguard currently babysitting Rosie, a brash author who annoyed the wrong Russian. When a series of low-level influencers with ties to her agency get themselves murdered, she turns to an unlikely detective: her retired father-in-law Steve. He's miffed about missing his pub quiz, but people keep shooting at his favorite daughter-in-law and that's just not on. Amy, Steve, and Rosie zip around the globe, each bringing their particular set of skills to bear on the knotty conspiracy. An enjoyable romp stuffed full of quirky characters.
"We Solve Murders" by Richard Osman is a delightful addition to the cozy mystery genre, combining wit, charm, and an engaging plot. Osman's signature humor and clever storytelling shine throughout the book, making it both a compelling mystery and a heartwarming tale of friendship and perseverance. The narrative is peppered with red herrings and unexpected twists, keeping readers guessing until the very end.
Osman's characters are a highlight of "We Solve Murders," each with distinct personalities and backgrounds that add richness to the story. The chemistry among the group members is palpable, and their interactions are often as entertaining as the mysteries they solve. Through their investigations, Osman explores themes of aging, purpose, and the importance of community, making the book resonate on a deeper level. With its engaging plot, memorable characters, and a perfect blend of humor and suspense, "We Solve Murders" is a thoroughly enjoyable read for mystery lovers and fans of Richard Osman's work.
Ok, I really enjoyed this! But I feel like the marketing ought to do a better job of advising readers who are familiar with Osman’s Thursday Murder Club series (… most of them, probably) that this new series is in a different genre.
This is a thriller. An Osmanesque thriller to be sure, but a thriller. Every time I sat down to read this — often before bed — I would read at least 20% of the book because it was so fast-paced, I couldn’t put it down. Again, this was totally fine — see the 4-star rating — I just was expecting something cozier and slower-paced from the cover and description, which both nod to his other series. There’s more on-page violence here as well (not surprising when one of your main characters is a thirtysomething bodyguard instead of four septuagenarians), but it wasn’t too gory even for my squeamish heart.
You can tell this is an Osman book from the strong character work, though, with POVs that shift between almost all of the main and secondary characters, humanizing them and showing their motivations. Amy (the bodyguard daughter-in-law) has a traumatic past mentioned in passing here that will clearly be explored in later books. Steve, her retired PI/cop father-in-law, reminded me a lot of the Thursday Murder Club’s Ibrahim after his assault: his life has become narrow and anxiety-filled since the passing of his beloved wife two years earlier. It seems clear that his grief with be an undercurrent in future books as well. And Rosie, the charismatic thriller novelist of a certain age who Amy’s been hired to protect, is an absolute delight. I was thrilled to see in Osman’s author’s note that she and a certain airport security guard will appear in future books.
That author’s note also says the Thursday Murder Club will be back in his next book; perhaps he intends to alternate series going forward?
I’ll read whatever Osman writes. Just please be a bit clearer about genre in your marketing materials.
From the very first page of We Solve Murders, Osman recreates the same cozy, quirky, and just plain fun atmosphere readers find in his Thursday Murder Club series. Readers of that series will not be let down by We Solve Murders, and will find a similar cast of characters you will feel all sorts of emotions for.
The storyline of We Solve Murders requires a good memory as there is a large cast of characters and it's possible that you may find yourself unsure of who a character is by the end, especially if you read slowly over time. The bottom line: you'll laugh, you'll cringe, you may even cry. I love Richard Osman's books and I suspect you will too.
Thanks to PENGUIN GROUP Viking for providing an early copy via NetGalley.
Outstanding and such a relief. We’ll be fine without The Thursday Murder Club in the hands of Amy, Steve, Rosie, and the unparalleled talents and humor of Richard Osman.
