I enjoyed reading this book. I think that Francis M. Flavin did an excellent job with taking the research and putting it into a well written novel about Ivan the Terrible. I found it well laid out, and I can't wait to read more from this author. I highly recommend it to the history/historical fiction lovers out there.
Thank you Net Galley ARC and Atmosphere Press

I really liked the historical setting of this, and think the author portrayed the grim realities of 16th century Russia effectively. It’s a fascinating time period I know nothing about, and haven’t come across much in fiction, so this feels like something different and niche (which I love to discover).
However, I unfortunately struggled with the writing style of the book. The language was often heavy and formal, and sentences could be quite complex. This meant it lacked a flow for me and slowed the pace down. It was quite difficult to stay focused because of it.
Overall, I liked the concept and a plot that took us on a journey through a bleak Russia in the 1500s, but I struggled with the overall tone.
Thank you to the publisher for the ARC.

I DNF’d this one at about 60%. The writer provided crazy detail in some places and very little in others. The relationships between the characters were a bit forced and, because there were so many characters it was hard to really get a connection with one. I think the story might have a good foundation but I really feel like this is a first draft that needs rework.
