This is funny at times and sad . Covered the menopause well.Sadly could relate to some of it. One bit spoilt it for me but I can’t say what or would spoil the story . The old people’s home was amazing. They all should be like that . Read it and judge for yourself.
What can I say? This book was written for me. If you’re a woman in her mid to late forties and early fifties, you’ve stumbled upon our truth here. This book is hilarious and has taken the time in our lives where we’re taking care of both our parents and our kids and reminds us about ourselves. Highly recommend!
This is an entertaining, quirky and heartwarming novel. I enjoyed the writing as well as the endearing characters. It delves into the, often stressful, reality of maintaining a balanced life with jobs, children, spouses and aging parents. I laughed throughout and highly recommend this book to all women.
Thank you to the publisher for the opportunity to read this advanced copy. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I gave up at 41 percent. Despite having enjoyed Love Life (five stars) by the same author, this one wasn't for me. The story was funny but bland, not sparkling as I remembered her other book. And full of cliches:
- A husband not being part of the family and household, Penny could've been a single mum;
- Her friend Caz had breast cancer, but 'luckily, (..) made it through surgery and chemo like an absolute legend and is now in remission;'
- Toxic situations and being competitive with other mums at school.
On top of that it was rather flat regarding diversity when it comes to skin color, gender identity, religion, history, cultural background, chronics, you name it. It doesn't have to be a theme, but someone being overweight, or with financial struggles, or being non-binary could have been casually mentioned. Unfortunately, I am adding that to a lot of reviews on books I've read recently...
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the book.
Hot Mother is a hilarious book with a relatable protagonist, Penny, who is going through everything difficult all at the same time.
Imagine having to care for your mother, children, yourself (hello menopause!), and juggle work and all other demands life is throwing at you.
I liked the writer's approach to her main character and the way she writes. I enjoyed the first 50 or so, and occasionally, other parts of the book better than the rest. The wit and writing shone at some pages, and at others, perhaps due to the other characters' voices, I was slightly less engaged.
Overall, a fun, bold and thought-provoking read.
I would have automatically picked this book up simply because of the cover, but, wow, what a great book! It was awesome!
I loved Penny!! As a mom of four, I needed this fun read! I so connected with Penny throughout this story. It was such a fun book to read. I loved it. Highly recommend!
