I thought that this book was really enjoyable, especially for the author's debut novel. It has all of the tropes that I love:
- Grumpy x Sunshine
- Only one bed
- Cinnamon Roll MC
- He Falls First
- One Night Stand
I loved the tension between the characters, as well as the fact that they were relatable. Also the tights scene?! Thank you thank you Netgalley and Forever Publishing for a eARC of this book in exchange for my review!
This book was great. The cover is gorgeous and the plot was well done. The main characters were very relatable!
DNF. I just could not get into this one. I can not even pinpoint why. I kept trying, but ultimately, DNF'd at like 60% I guess the story just wasn't keeping my attention enough.
I hate DNFing an ARC but just couldn't keep going.
Yes. This was beautifully written and I loved the characters, the banter, the romantic tropes that they went through for "the list" to ruin romance. I loved them! Sawyer made me laugh so many times.
There was depth and not everything was resolved (I think you'll see the point of that) which I actually appreciated.
I just would have loved maybe more from Mason and had a few things that weren't for me personally in the book.
Overall, I flew through this book, thoroughly enjoyed it and can already tell it is going to be a favorite for so many.
...and excuse me- the tights scene. This will live in my head forever more.
4.5 stars!
I was initially drawn to this book due to the truly gorgeous cover (!!!), but am happy to report I loved the story just as much!
The author created real, flawed characters that are so damn relatable and easy to root for. I'm a sucker for the whole "strangers-to-lovers-to-friends-to-idiots-to-lovers" trope, it always slaps! Sawyer and Mason had instant chemistry, and their flirty banter and sexual tension was delectable. Mason is such a little hopeless romantic, and I love him so much. What a softie! Sawyer is the skeptic, and I could not have related to her more. It was easy to empathize with her reluctance to get attached in any way. I felt that the development of their connection/friendship/relationship was realistic, as were their conflicts.
Also, these two were so damn horny for each other that they had me giggling. I will never look at tights the same way. *fans self*
I love how the author formatted/organized the chapters, and her writing was great! I laughed, I cried, I blushed and I really fell for these characters.
A fantastic new voice in romance! One I am eager to read more of.
INCREDIBLE.
5 stars, the perfect meta meditation on the romance tropes and genres and I ATE this up in one sitting. Folks are going to LOVE unromance from Erin and I can't wait to see it pop up on so many BEST of lists in 2025.
A perfectly fluffy (yet deliciously spicy) romance book filled with a fantastic mix of cute little cheesy romantic dates and panty burning spice.
A serial romantic (and TV star hottie) meets a romance author who’s sworn off love (and currently suffering from writer’s block) in an all too perfect meet-cute: the stuck elevator. Since neither of them want love they have a one night stand instead… One more meet-cute later and they’re agreeing to help each other out - She will ruin love for him, one cliche romance activity at a time and she’ll be inspired for her new novel in the process.
What I loved…
- the tights scene 🥵
- holiday vibes
- he’s the hopeless romantic and she’s the jaded love hater
- bisexual FMC
- giggles and feet kicking
- side characters were lovable!
What I didn’t love…
- This one leaned a little to close to the fluffy side and just a hair too meta - definitely more a me problem than a book problem
- I didn’t quite connect with the MCs.
Thank you NetGalley and Forever (Grand Central) for sending this book (eARC) for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
A jaded romance writer with writer’s block agrees to ruin romance for a hopeless romantic actor after they a one-night stand. Do these two fools honestly think that’s what’s going to happen?
I’ve been reading a spate of books featuring romance authors and they’ve all been heavy-handed in their meta-ness about tropes which turns me off. 'Unromance' was the salve for me with its fresh concept AND execution. The tropes were used in a way that was seamless and charming. I loved the gender reversal as to which character was the romantic and upbeat one too. I loved this book so much.
Sawyer and Mason were just so good together and perfect for each other. I loved their banter and the ways they just understood the other. Their chemistry burst off the pages (OMG TIGHTS! and naming your vibrator 🔥). Sawyer’s heartbreak made her cynical about love, while Mason threw himself into being the best boyfriend with every girlfriend. I loved how prickly Sawyer was, but somehow couldn’t help but reluctantly let Mason in. Mason was also the ultimate sweetheart but needed to stop rushing his partners to go all in quickly.
I’ve been waiting for this book since another author shared Erin Connor’s Instagram last year and it was well worth the wait. I got so invested in this book, laughing, needing a fan for all the heat or wanting to shake certain characters for self-sabotaging themselves. It needs to come with a warning: major book hangover alert. Best read wearing ballgown in an all-night diner.
Thanks to Forever (Grand Central Publishing) and NetGalley for the ARC.
I was surprised at how much I liked this story. The characters were entertaining and the storyline appealing. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
I’m not one for “dating coach” romance tropes but this was different as Mason wanted Swayer to ruin romance for him. So I decided to give it a try. This was a cute debut from the author. I am not a big fan of Christmas romances or like hallmark Christmas movies so I didn’t enjoy that aspect as much.
One of the key elements that I love about Unromance (and there are many) is the clarity of voice, not just of the story’s one-night-stand-delusionists-to-lovers leads, Sawyer and Mason, but of the author, whose debut novel has me clamoring for more of her releases in the years to come.
This book had me laughing out loud and often. The inner monologues draw you in to the depth and humor of both characters, and the banter between them is quick, effortless, and real. Together, they make for a high-paced and energetic read, one that has me ready to read this book again so I can stay in the world Erin Connor has built just a little while longer. And to have successfully romanticized Chicago in the wintertime? Now, that’s a feat to accomplish.
Others have said it before, but this is truly a love letter to fans of romance, with its ode to tropes big and small, a main character who is a romance author herself, and a hunk of an actor love interest that any of us could only be so lucky to find ourselves trapped in an elevator with. And the sex scenes? Phew. Connor sure knows how to write ‘em.
Thank you, NetGalley and Forever Publishing, for the early access read. I can’t wait to get my hands on the final copy when it’s out Jan. 14, 2025!
I thought this was pretty cute and a great debut. I went back and forth with the flirty banter, it leans towards instalove sometimes and that's not for me. I also really didn't love the last act drama, that took me out for a minute.
I loved Mason though and Sawyer, for the most part, felt pretty authentic. I would recommend this for anyone looking for a fun rom-com.
I received this work as an ARC and am leaving my review voluntarily and honestly.
What a fantastic debut!
This is truly an ode to not only romance tropes but also to the 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s rom-coms!
I loved how each chapter began with a romance trope to set the mood, which felt very unique.
I recognized most of the rom-com references and it made my rom-com loving heart very happy!
A romance author with a writer’s block pairs up with a broken hearted, hopeless romantic actor so she can be cured up of her writer’s block and find inspiration by ruining romance for him - this was such a fun premise and executed so well by the author!
The writing style was captivating and kept me engaged throughout the story. As a romance writer myself, I found Sawyer’s struggles as a writer to be quite relatable!
I also understood how both Sawyer and Mason’s baggage from their past relationships informed their decisions or aversion to love in Sawyer’s case.
Overall, I highly recommend this delightful romance novel!
4.75 stars!!!
what an amazing debut!!! i loved this book so much!! it has all the things you love about romcoms that just makes your heart full !!! i was giggling & swooning. mason is the MAN! the way he never lost his hopeless romantic side but was also just so perfectly hot & funny & himself…obsesssed! sawyer is a strong independent woman who also just has the best personality. i want to be friends with her!! i loved watching both mason & sawyer grow individually & how they came together in the end 🥹
i didn’t want this book to end & i need it to be made into a romcom movie pls & thank youuuuu
thank you ReadForever & Netgalley for the eARC! this is my honest review.
4.5 rounded up
This was such a sweet book, I LOVED IT. It managed to take a lot of my favorite rom-com moments and subtly incorporate them.
I adored Sawyer. I thought she was hilarious and the perfect amount of cynical, which I love in an FMC. I loved Mason and his rose-colored glasses!! I’m a sucker for a hopeless romantic in romances and seeing it in an MMC is something I don’t see super often.
Sawyer and Mason’s chemistry was through the roof from their first interaction. Their banter was written so seamlessly, I fell in love with both of them immediately. I loved both of their character arcs, seeing both of them open up to one another and becoming friends (along with all the not so subtle flirting) was one of my favorite things about this. I loved seeing both of them find joy in their careers again and be happy!
I CANNOT wait for more from Erin. Until then, I will be thinking about the tights scene daily.
If you hate slow burns this one is for you. There is great chemistry between the main characters and some fun banter between them both. I recommend this to anyone looking for a fun lighthearted festive read.
*He falls first
*Banter
*Holiday vibes
*Great side characters
*Some spice
I really enjoyed this book which is something since I went into blind. I had never heard of the author (this is her debut) and didn't hear much about the book. Basically it's a romance author who's in a rut (Sawyer) and Mason falls too hard every time so he needs Sawyer to help bring him back to reality. Plus, they have the CUTEST of meet cutes which really puts this book above others.
Although the book was somewhat predictable (because it's a modern romance and there's a formula to it and is WHY I LIKE ROMANCES), it was such a fun read. I loved the chemistry between Sawyer and Mason and the fact that they don't deny or ignore it. It's got some great banter and I found myself really rooting for them the whole time. And the side characters (Ahen, Lilly!!!) are *chef's kiss*.
You'll like this book if:
- You hate slow burn (this is NOT slow burn)
- Spicy scenes
- He falls first
- Holiday vibes
- Banter
- Great side characters

Unromance was cute and festive! Sawyer, the tomance writer who thinks love is dead (but still needs to write about it), and Mason, the one who always falls harder, team up to fix their problems.
I loved the Christmas-y dates they went on, and how Sawyer tried to ruin the magic for Mason (per his request) while hoping to feel inspired for her own book.
This was a sweet one, and it was fun to see the creative process in both characters!
This was such a cute read. I love that Sawyer is a romance author who loves a good meet-cute and the book starts out with a meet-cute. I loved that we jump right into the main characters acknowledging the attraction between them and that we avoided starting off with a “slow burn”. As much as I love a good slow burn starting off with a bang (pun intended) felt new and refreshing. The “romance rules” at the beginning of each chapter was fun and immersive and the banter and inner monologue of the characters literally made me laugh out loud. Towards the middle of the book things felt a little slow and the whole “ruining romance” mission felt a little silly considering they both already had feelings for one another but overall I really, really enjoyed this and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a fun, lighthearted holiday read.
Review: 4.5/5 stars
Spice: Multiple, open door scenes
What an adorable debut novel! I absolutely love this story and the characters within! Sawyer and Mason were so much fun to watch grow in their own ways. Sawyer is afraid to get attached, and Mason gets attached too fast, so it is fun to watch and adjust to each other and balance each other out.
As someone who loves to read, it's also fun to see a true representation of how authors go through the process to write some of our favorite novels. It takes writing to a whole other level, and gives a lot of appreciation to authors and the craft of writing!
Overall, I highly recommend this debut for anyone who loves to read and loves to see tropes shifted! Can't wait to read Erin's next book!
