I absolutely loved this book! Sawyer and Mason are both written in such a realistic way - they are both a mess, but they work on themselves and choose to grow in a way that was really affirming. You could tell how much the author enjoys romance in the way that tropes were used, toyed with, and sometimes fully subverted. The book was moderately spicy - several very descriptive scenes sprinkled throughout - and the spicy was well written. I also enjoyed that Sawyer’s bisexuality was part of the plot without being her only defining characteristic. And as a former Chicago girl, I have to say this book got the city right! Highly recommended.

This book was cute...in theory...and then it just too much for me: I got frustrated with alllll the pop culture references, and then allllll of the tropes the two "combat" and then I hit 60% and looked at the audiobook guessing I had an hour left based on the plot. NOPE - 4 hours?! AND THEN?! I'm not sure how two characters communicated SO much about exactly what their past problems are and how to avoid it in the future, and still problems and miscommunication moments OVER AND OVER. They needed therapy to solve it all. So frustrating.

I wanted to love this soooooo bad, but it was such a fail. The utter lack of chemistry between Sawyer and Mason was astounding. Also, the storyline just dragged and dragged and was just not a fun read for me. The pining Mason had for Sawyer though was the only good thing lol

Overall, I enjoyed this. Sawyer is a writer with a dry creative well, and Mason is sick of falling in love. What starts as a no-strings, one night stand, turns into a plan to ruin romance via trope-tastic dates. If you're looking for a lighthearted and quirky romance, check this one out.

A perfectionist lover boy and a romance author who hates romance was a very cute mix. I love the idea of the two together but often their connection felt forced or surface level (sometimes a little under the surface too). The audiobook really helped me fly through the book and I loved their dynamic a little better through there.

Sawyer and Mason were somewhat relatable in who they were as individuals in love. Some people like this, some don't. I am the former. I love being able to find a connection with the characters I'm reading and Sawyer and Mason had qualities that made you sit/lay there and say "Wow, that's annoying as heck but I also do this or know someone who does this. I get that." Connor does a great job bringing that relatability into her writing without it being cringy or having the storyline in anyway.

I am excited to see what else Connor has in store in the future!

I really enjoyed the first half of this book. It was well written and I enjoyed the concept. But then I just found myself putting it down and not caring or wanting to get back into it? I loved the concept. Breaking down romance tropes was super fun. But it almost became too much and it s more about the tropes versus the relationship.

The ending also felt rushed. It was fun though. A very solid debut!

I love when the story inside is as cute as the cover! I really enjoyed this trope-filled story of two characters falling in love against their wills. The lead characters had great chemistry, and I really enjoyed the unique way the author poked fun at popular romance tropes. It reads less like a celebrity romance and more like a one-night-stand to friends to lovers romance. I found some of the conflict overblown and repetitive, like the FMC harping on the MMC moving away; babe, he’s a 4-hour flight away, and you work remote. Inconsequential conflicts kept happening to the point that it got a bit frustrating, but I would say the HEA was worth it in the end!

This book just wasn’t for me. The chemistry felt forced—getting stuck in an elevator, running into each other at a bar, and then a one-night stand just didn’t click believably. It all felt off. And the nickname for her lady parts? Yeah, that was a definite no for me. Ick.

This book was SO FUN and I never wanted it to end! Their connection felt palpable and I was so in for the long run. Fun, sexy, and the banter was top notch. What an amazing debut and a unique take on a rom com!

I was honestly really hopeful for this book but the connection between the characters was lacking and the writing could have been better. overall i enjoyed the plot.

Unromance was such a good time, I didn’t want it to end! It felt like I was watching a 00’s romcom movie- it kept me laughing, smiling, swooning. It was everything I love about reading romance. It’s impossible not to love this one! I’ll definitely be reading Connor’s next book! 😍

After the anticipation I felt for this book....it was a major letdown. I ADORE the cover and the author, so having such a difficult time getting through this story was incredibly disappointing. I almost DNFed several times.

The biggest problem I had with this book was how HARD it was trying: to be funny, to be romantic, to be earnest. It was painfully overdone in both tone and metatextuality. Perhaps some readers will enjoy the "see what I'm doing here?" winky-face-to-the-audience aura this book adopts throughout its entirety, but I found it grating and cringe-worthy. IT WAS TRYING WAY TOO HARD. It pulled me out of the story and didn't match the characters' ages or produce a believable plot or captivating romance.

Sadly, a major miss for me. :'(

Thank you Forever for the digital ARC. Unromance was written for romance movie lovers and romance readers. Mason is the sweetheart celebrity who falls hard and fast. Sawyer is the romance writer who doesn't believe in love anymore. She's going to ruin romance for him, to cure him of his easily broken heart, by going on classic romcom dates together. You can figure out where this is going. I did find some of their discussions and humor to be crude, but that's based on my personal preferences. I also felt like things started to get repetitive at one point. Overall, it was a nice nod to romcoms in a unique delivery.

Unromance is Erin Connor’s debut novel. I ended up DNF’ing at 60%. I usually don’t DNF so late into a book and try to power through, but I just couldn’t do it. Sawyer and Mason’s relationship felt too surface-level, and despite all the romantic things they were doing to make their relationship unromantic, I never saw them build a genuine connection. The book is written in third person, alternating between Sawyer and Mason’s perspectives. However, I found their inner monologues repetitive and dull by the time I reached the middle of the book. Oddly enough, I still felt like the characters lacked depth even though we had access to their thoughts. The writing style also felt very choppy and unpolished where some chapters moved the story forward while others seemed like filler. Overall, this one wasn’t for me and I don’t quite understand why there are the high ratings for this.

This. Book!! Unromance has quickly become a romance favorite for me. The characters are real and complex. The plot is equal parts tender romance and witty romp. Erin, this book has it all, and it’s perfect!

I sincerely enjoy when a contemporary romance gives me characters with depth and complexity. Sawyer is a far from perfect female main character, which makes me love her more. Mason, our Hollywood heart throb, also has his personality challenges that he wants to overcome.

Each chapter starts with a new trope that our characters are going to “unromance” during the chapter, which is super fun! It adds a really nice through line to the book, and makes the pacing of the story really nice and enjoyable.

I’m so happy to see that this book is getting such positive attention! I knew from reading the synopsis a few months ago that this would be a book for me, and I was not disappointed. I have been and will continue to recommend this book to romance readers everywhere!

Unromance is a MUST READ!

My first 5 star read of the year!

This was so fucking delightful and had me grinning ear to ear through the whole book. This book is a love letter to rom-coms and my romance loving heart ate up every bit.

This played with romance tropes in a way I absolutely loved. Since the heroine is a romance author, the book was so self aware of its trope use and subversion. Plus this has absolutely hilarious chapter titles defining classic romance tropes.

This combined some of my favorite things - fake dating, a hopeless romantic, and a deal. Their chemistry, the pining, the dates.. all of it was just so fantastic. And the audiobook just enhanced the story even more for me since it's dual narrated.

I just can't gush about this book enough. If you are a rom-com fan or fellow hopeless romantic, definitely pick this one up.

I loved this book! Mason and Sawyer have a meet cute in an elevator, have a one-night stand, and then end up running into each other later on. They both need help - Mason needs romance ruined for him, and Sawyer needs a cure for her writer's block. Okay I have to say this: I really reallllly get bummed out when romances are told from 3rd POV. With that being said, this was a fantastic debut. It was sweet and spicy, which I love. But it was also so much fun.

This book follows a romance author who has a one night stand but ends up running into him again. I was super excited for this book because of the storyline and the cover is so pretty, however I was a tad disappointed. The storyline was good but I didn’t like how the perspectives were written. It made it confusing with who was speaking. There also weren’t many conflicts in the book that kept it really entertaining.

Sawyer is the FMC of the story and I loved learning about the book industry from her side. She is having a hard time writing a book but I loved seeing her stay strong. Then we have Mason the MMC and I also enjoyed his character. He truly wants to be with Sawyer and I love how supportive he was of her. There were some side character but enough where the story didn’t astray from Sawyer and Mason. The romance is grumpy x sunshine and fake relationship which was well done but I wanted to see less drama at the end.

Overall this book was well done but I wish I enjoyed it as much as I was expecting. I heard great things from other readers which I was hoping I could also experience. I don’t know if it’s wasn’t the time for me but there were still some amazing scenes in this book.

This is a book for all my fellow rom-com movie lovers who wanted the male main character as the hopeless romantic and the female main character jaded and grumpy. I ate this book up and cackled and swooned throughout the entirety of it! The banter, the tension, and the steam were perfection! All of the rom-com movie nods made me so nostalgic and I loved them!
