Thank you to Forever and NetGalley for the advance reader copy of Unromance by Erin Connor.
Sawyer Greene is a romance writer and Mason West is an actor. What begins as a meet cute when they get stuck together in an elevator, leads to what they intended to be a one-night stand. When the two reunite later they strike an agreement to relive significant moments from rom coms as a way for Mason end his hopeless romanticism and Sawyer to cure her writer’s block, a result of her heartbreaking break up.
This is such a solid debut from author Erin Connor. Sawyer and Mason are very relatable characters and have excellent chemistry together. If you love reliving popular rom com moments, this is a book to check out, though be prepared some of their moments may end up supersede the originals.
I'm looking forward to future releases from Erin Connor.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book.
I can't believe this is a debut author. She did an amazing job. It was everything you want in a rom-com. My favorite parts were the title headings - I was laughing before I even read the first line of the book. Hilarious! Especially the one about gray sweatpants ;) I wasn't thrilled with Sawyer but Mason is everything! This would be 5 stars from me except for the slow down in the middle of the story. I thought for sure I was at least at 70% when in fact I was barely halfway. Also, I was a little disappointed that I didn't get more of a feel for the setting. Chicago is one of my favorite places I've visited, yet I felt the setting could have been anywhere. And I didn't love the ending - I want to know what happened during "one year later." I definitely recommend this and look forward to reading Erin Connor again. (Please write another!)
This was an enjoyable rom-com! I loved the arc these two characters had - from random meeting to one night stand to friends to lovers - because you really got to see their feelings and connection blossom on the page. It was witty and fun, and maybe the only thing that knocked it down a star for me was one too many will-they/won’t-they moments. Otherwise, highly recommend!
Literal perfection. I seriously don’t even know what to say other than this was fucking amazing! I absolutely loved it.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked all the tropes and how they were able to create their own love story within the parameters of a romance novel.
I do love Erin’s voice and was very much looking forward to this novel
*Unromance* by Erin Conner was an absolute delight—a breezy, feel-good read that completely swept me off my feet. Mason and Sawyer are such a dynamic duo, and I couldn’t get enough of their chemistry. Watching them navigate their relationship felt like stepping into a rom-com dream, and Conner nails every moment with humor and heart.
The banter between Mason and Sawyer? Pure gold. They’re hilarious, relatable, and the perfect mix of swoony and sassy. I found myself laughing out loud at their witty exchanges, then holding my breath in those sweet, slow-burn moments. Seriously, I had a smile on my face for most of the book—it's just that kind of story.
What I loved most, though, was how *Unromance* perfectly balances humor and heart. It’s funny without being over the top, romantic without being cheesy, and it never takes itself too seriously. It’s sweet and light, but also sharp and clever, with just the right amount of drama to keep things interesting. It’s the kind of book you’ll finish in one sitting because you just can’t put it down.
If you’re a true romance lover, this is the book you need in your life. It’s the perfect pick-me-up—romantic, funny, and full of heart. Erin Conner has crafted a story that’s not just enjoyable, but downright fun. It’s exactly the kind of read that will leave you with a grin on your face long after you’ve turned the last page.
This is the first of her books I have read and I loved it. It was a little slow getting into it but once you do you will love it. I cant wait to read more of her books.
Unromance was a greatly welcomed surprise of a romance. A debut romance, to boot. It was sexy and snarky and somehow both cynical yet endearingly loving. I enjoyed the premise a lot. Often I found myself smiling while reading. It is a gem of a book, and I look forward to more books by the author.
Thank you to Forever (Grand Central Publishing) and NetGalley for the advance reader copy. All opinions are solely my own.
Hot Damn! What a read! Erin Connor created such fantastic characters and a dream worthy tale. This story is a spin on the celeb/normie, one night to forever contemporary romcom that makes me fall in love with the genre all over again. Overwhlmingly enjoyed!!!!
Thank you to Forever (Grand Central Publishing) and NetGalley for providing an eARC for a honest review.
The Unromance by Erin Connor is a refreshingly modern love story that centers around Mason and Sawyer, two characters who’ve each been burned by love and are determined to avoid romance. But as they navigate a series of accidental meetings and reluctant moments of connection, they discover that sometimes the best relationships come when you’re not looking for them.
I loved how Mason and Sawyer’s chemistry builds slowly, moving from a wary friendship to something deeper. Their banter is sharp, the tension is palpable, and the story balances swoon-worthy (and spicy) moments with thoughtful insights into vulnerability and trust. Connor does a great job capturing the nuances of two people trying to protect themselves but still drawn to each other in undeniable ways.
If you’re a fan of romances that defy conventions with a blend of humor, heart, and relatability, The Unromance is one to add to your TBR!
A girl who doesn’t believe in love and a man who seems to fall too easily, pair up to find a way to ruin romance. With ice skating, Christmas tree farm picking, a spontaneous trip to IKEA and the dreaded New Years Eve kiss at midnight, Sawyer and Mason are determined to take every 90-20s clique rom com and ruin it for all future moments.
This was an absolute stunning debut that had me kicking and giggling my feet the entire way. From an accidentally elevator meet cute turned one night stand these two had me wrapped around their finger until the very last page. Sawyer is struggling to write her next romance novel only she doesn’t truly believe in love when she meet tv actor Mason West who seems to fall in love with everyone he meets. This unlikely pair are the best people to help them out. But when the big romantic gestures turn into smaller every day moments Mason realizes he’s fallen again, but this time it’s different. And our Sawyer, who believes herself to be broken and only focusing on one thing. I love her change and growth throughout this story and how she finds herself falling for Mason despite how terrified she is.
Mason Alvarez West the man that you are 😍 completely captivated me how easy these two stole my heart with just a few pages. From one of the hottest few chapters, to each of them opening up to each other like they never have before. Some parking lot antics, a dress montage scene, a book layered in diversity and tension, adding in a couple of meddling of best friends these two were doomed from the start.
This is going to be the book and author to watch on release day in January. It’s a stunning book that will leave you reeling for more and unable to stop think about Sawyer and Mason for months to come.
Beautiful story. Characters were written well and plot was entertaining! This was my first book by this author and I’m definitely excited to read more! 4 stars recommendation!
Ok..... Ahem drum roll...watch out ladies and gents Erin Connor is a new romance queen!!!
What a debut!! Oh my goodness THIS book!! I haven't had this much fun with a romance book in so long especially a debut.
Sawyer Greene and Mason West you stole my heart over and over!! <3.
Erin you can write any romance book and I will read it. Connor gives us a perfect balance of sassy banter, spicy scenes that will eat you up, and such sweet cozy fall in love moments.
I was laughing so hard throughout the book and I also shed some tears in the final chapters.
By far, one of my top romance books of 2024.
I have already preordered my copy <3.
5/5 stars
Thank you so much to Forever publishing and the author for my copy.
Out January 2025
This was fine. I liked the little chapter descriptions and the characters were cute but I sadly didn‘t really connect to any of them. It was a little too predictable for my liking but if you‘re looking for a cute little romcom absolutely check this out. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this arc!
This was quite the fun book. Sawyer is a romance author who doesn’t do romance in real life, while Mason is a romantic who can’t keep a relationship. She’s having writer’s block and he needs to stop falling in love so they strike a deal to help each other out.
Sawyer was a great protagonist and I really felt for her. Mason was very dreamy, and their love scenes were *flame emoji*.
Thanks as always to NetGalley for the ARC.
I have to say for a debut novel Erin Connor knocked it out of the park. This book takes our favorite rom-com tropes and puts them to the test.
We have romance author Sawyer who’s this cynical grump. She’s burned out on all things romance. Meanwhile you have our MMC Mason who is quite literally our golden retriever sunshine. No matter what life throws at him he still believes in love and falls fast. These two meet in your standard “meet-cute” situation of being stranded in elevator. And after multiple unexpected interactions the two take it as the sign to see if they can ruin romance for each other.
I don’t want to spoil anything, but just know I was cackling while reading this in my office. The Christmas tree scene had me dying. Thank god I read that on a work from home day. Overall, I really enjoyed Mason & Sawyers story. They both had their insecurities and issues. But they both acted like adults and communicated with each other. I honestly wasn’t ready for their story to end. If you can’t tell I highly recommend “Unromance” and I can’t wait to check out Erin’s next book! Also big thank you to NetGalley and Forever for the opportunity to read and review this book!
This was spectacular!! I loved the characters, this is such a fun twist on all the traditional romance tropes. I thought this was just so fun and sexy and beyond cute.
ah yes, in an effort to become disillusioned about love, true romantic realizes that it is friendship, not grand romance, that is the best foundation for love. meanwhile their partner, person who is disillusioned about love, realizes that it is themselves, not love, that has caused their problems, and opens themselves to the joy of loving and being loved.
and i will eat it up every time.
tldr: a fun romance that takes place around the holidays but is not painfully holiday!
i weirdly don’t have a whole lot to say which is maybe a good thing? like it’s not profound but it feels fairly real and is cute and i liked the internal obstacles our main characters had to overcome and i overall had a very fun time! also, to the author’s credit, when sawyer and mason finally confessed their feelings after grand gesture round 1, i totally felt my tummy swooping which is something i am generally immune to from reading so much romance. so that was enjoyable.
giving this four stars but i don’t feel strongly about a star rating for this book? just that it was fun
the only criticisms i can think of: our main characters’ idea of ruining romance tropes is cute but it’s clear early on how little it’s really working so idk how they fooled themselves for so long. but on the other hand i appreciated that they both knew inside that they never stopped being attracted to each other and wanted to act on it even when they thought it was against their better judgement bc that’s so real.
also, even though i liked that this took place at the holidays, the bulk of the plot happened over only a month and there wasn’t a real reason for it being so short? like just do the exact same plot over a more realistic timeline? which also would’ve deepened their connection for having spent even more time together. idk i just don’t want accelerated timelines in my romances unless there is a specific, articulated reason for it.
that’s all!
I can’t believe this book is a debut novel. Erin Connor has crafted a story that hooked me from the first page, effortlessly blending humor, emotion, and depth. The book follows romance author Sawyer, a skeptic of real-life romance, and Mason, a hopeless romantic. After a meet-cute getting stuck in an elevator, the two make a pact: Sawyer will help Mason shatter romance tropes to stop him from falling in love and on the way help Sawyer get over writer’s block. It’s a setup crafted just for me, and this book absolutely delivered.
From start to finish, Unromance takes classic romance tropes and flips them in a refreshingly self-aware, yet genuinely heartwarming way. Connor strikes the perfect balance, allowing the story to explore romantic cliches with both humor and respect. I was worried the story might fall into the trap of annoying and predictable around the third act conflict. Instead, Connor turns the conflict on its head and uses it to highlight the insecurities of each of the characters, show us that it’s not what they are fighting about that is causing the rift between them.
Unromance made me feel so many emotions, I can hardly put into words. If this is Erin Connor's debut, I can't wait to see what she writes next.
I really really wanted to love this! I think for sure would work for a lot of people but I just can’t do steamy romance in 3rd person POV. It’s so hard for me to follow. Obviously just a personal problem. I was into the characters and storyline but the pov was holding me back from really enjoying it.
