This was an interesting mystery and was a great book.
The Missing Nurse by Roger Silverwood and narrated by Gareth Armstrong had for me echoes of the Midsomer Murders TV show but forges its own path in the lead character DI Michael Angel. A police Procedural/ Thriller set in South Yorkshire from the 90s to the present day, it was a good listen, narrated well
The series definitely has a lot of potential and I am looking for war to seeing where it goes next
Thank you to Bolinda Audio, Roger Silverwood and the narrator Gareth Armstrong for this ALC. My review is left voluntarily and all opinions are my own
I liked this book. The writing forward will and the story ran naturally. Definitely gave cozy mystery fall vibes.
This was a run-of-the-mill police procedural. It's set, I'm guesing, in the 1990s but the main character, Detective Angel, is a total dinosaur. Through the whole book he's complaining that his wife isn't at home to cook and clean for him. I might forgive it if it had been written in the 1950s. As a device to make him appear like an 'old-fashioned copper', it's completely overdone. I won't be bothering to read any more books in this series. The narration is good.
This felt like trudging through treacle. Unlikeable characters abounded with few, if any, redeemable features and a plot so poorly paced that all tension and thrill was lost.
I enjoyed this book. A nice easy listen. I loved the old fashioned phrases. "The house was decorated with frills and furbellows".
I did have a slight problem with it though. If you are a fan of or know anything about police procedures this book is not for you. Interviewing suspects in their cells, telling them they don't need a solicitor after they ask for one. If you told me it was set in the 60s or 70s I'd have liked it more. At first I thought it was but they mention mobile phones a few times.
This was an interesting murder mystery that had all the makings of a 5-star read until the very end. There was a broad range of characters, each well-developed with their own faults and motives and the mystery itself was enjoyably complicated with many different layers. The only downside, aside from the blatantly unnecessary misogynism throughout the novel, was the grand reveal at the end. Although I enjoyed the scene itself where the police catch the "killer" and they tell their side of the story, the identity of the actual killer was confusing and disappointing. It was impossible to guess who they were, but this wasn't due to an expertly set-up plot or incredible writing, it was because the motives for the murders weren't even briefly mentioned once until after the killer was identified. This frustrated me greatly as there was nothing to piece together and no hints or clues for the reader to follow. Although there were many well-thought-out red herrings near the end of the story, it was still irritating that the author left nothing for the reader to go on to try and solve the murder themselves.
I've never read or listened to a thriller like it. It seemed almost satire in the way it was coming across. Lots of dark humor maybe? I'm english and even I was scratching my head. I don't know I loved it but I was intrigued for sure.
The story was really unusual but I loved the characters. Yeah this one is very different and nothing I have experienced before

The storyline starts off 20 years ago and then focuses on present day. It’s not an overly captivating storyline but Detective Angel definitely brought something. I can see why some may not like him as a character but I really did even with his old school ways and flaws which at times really wouldn’t fly and could get him into trouble 😳. I enjoyed Detective Angel’s investigative tactics but the storyline overall was meh and not something I’ll remember but I would be interested in other storylines featuring Detective Angel.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bolindo Audio for the opportunity to listen to and review #TheMissingNurse
Angel is a grumpy slightly crooked cop who thinks he can bark orders and picks and chooses what is his work. A missing nurse, a few robberies and a murder all to be linked. Dismissing some parts until an intriguing issue. Who has a stocking on inside out. It’s not the greatest but follows those typical stories that are of the same theme.
Want to solve a 20 year old disappearance? All you need is an American Class Ring, a ransomed video tape, a couple of dead cats, and … DCI Angel.
This is my first read of this author and I didn’t know what to expect. DCI Michael Angel is a bit of a curmudgeon but he is also dogged about his work. With this being book 1 there are some backstories that are not yet flushed out as the team works to get to the bottom of the cases that have landed on the DCI’s desk. He is a bit cross about having a new transfer on his team, DS Crisp while his DS is at profiler training. Angel takes an earnest fresh faced PC under his wing and deals with fending for himself while his wife is away carrying for her ill mother.
If you’ve read the Yorkshire Murder Mystery series, DCI Angel reminds me of an older pre-DCI Oldroyd. A little less enlightened and a little gruffer and grittier but good at solving cases.
The way the pieces of all of the cases were interwoven was well done. I have a couple questions that didn’t seem to get resolved but it didn’t detract from the case(s) resolution.
I am interested in book2 to see if DCI Angel and his team continues to grow on me.
Thank you to #NetGalley for the opportunity to share my thoughts on the story.
Happy Reading!
It was an amazing read from the start. It starts off kind of slow but picks up really quickly and keeps you going till the end. I enjoyed the story line and the story telling. It is a really good book. Go and read it and be captivated by the story and the twists and suspense.
Thank you NetGalley for this audio ARC
I thought the blurb sounded interesting, but I’ve struggled with this title. I have the Audible version and the narration is OK, with strong character accents. But I really don’t get the story. I don’t think it works as a cosy crime, it’s a bit of a comedy caper, it’s not a good police procedural and I couldn’t engage at all with the central character, Michael Angel. He may be ‘old school’ but I didn’t find his ill humour and sexist approach at all endearing. There aren’t many twists and I’m surprised to find this is one of a long standing popular series of titles. Not for me.
I listened to the audiobook version of this book. Being from Yorkshire, the accents entertained me and the narrator was quite a character.
This book was interesting and it did make me chuckle out loud several times.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Missing Nurse by Roger Silverwood is the first book in Yorkshire Murder Mysteries. I listened to an audiobook narrated by Gareth Armstrong.
I would say it's a comedy mystery because I can't take this seriously! The dialogue, oh my, made me laugh so much!
Detective Inspector Micheal Angel is just a walking joke. In some way, I believe that the narrator Gareth Armstrong of the audiobook made it more realistic! The voices and switch between characters were just brilliant! If I read it, it would be a 3-star book as I would want to skip parts.
In some way, I was waiting for a twist that never came but I believe this is the way it's a series. They need you to follow the path to the next book!
I believe I will laugh whenever I see milk in the shop :D
Please don't take it seriously, take it lightly like a good comedy!
Inspector Michael Angel is having to cope at home while his wife is away, while at the same time find a missing nurse, solve a murder and feed the cats. Angel could be described as quirky and quite entertaining even with his flaws.
Enjoyed this cosy caper of a crime novel. Well written and well narrated (I listened to the audiobook). Great characters at all levels f the p9lice force. Unusual tactics will be used to resolve the various cases being led by Angel, enjoy.
This book started off a tad slow for me, but once I was hooked, I couldn’t stop listening. Excellent audiobook narration! I love the series MC, Michael Angel. His mannerisms & sense of humor made this story so much fun! The book has many twists and turns and the ending was quite unexpected. Recommend if you’re looking for something a bit different in the mystery department.
This one was almost a DNF for me. I was definitely disappointed. I felt like the investigation dragged on forever. I was waiting for some kind of twist or turn to happen and nothing did. Usually if I put down a book/audiobook I keep thinking about it and can not wait to pick it back up. That did not happen with this at all. I actually felt like it was a job and I had to finish.
I will not be leaving a review for this on any sites due to it only being a 2 star.
I listened to the audiobook and at first it had so much promise - I loved the thick Yorkshire and Welsh accents - the Narrator, Gareth Jones did a very good job. But it went downhill from there.
The main character, Investigator Angel, was one of the most annoying and unlikeable characters I’ve ever come across. He was brash, sexist and racist. I do appreciate authentic characters - but there was nothing to like about him at all. I was getting very irritated with the constant jokes and one-liners it just felt very desperate and forced.
The story regarding the investigation was ok. But it was marred by the loathsome characters the author weaved. It was cumbersome to get through. I won’t be checking out others in the series.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bolinda Audio for my copy.
In general a good storyline but I got frustrated with the Angel the main character and the portrayal of the OTT grumpy main character.
I'm not even sure what decade this was set it but it just felt very dated to me
