I thought that this was an excellent little book!

The author tells a story and whilst they are doing that, they are teaching you, and you are learning about how to draw that part yourself - it is very clever as you learn without even knowing.

The book has even tempted me to give it a go myself

It is 5 stars from me for this one - very highly recommended!

Book 125 of 300 ~ 2024

🌟🌟🌟🌟

What a clever book! While telling the story, the author teaches you how to draw for that particular part of the story! I love it!!

It actually gives me hope that I can finally attempt to draw something cute. Haha

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

How to Draw a Brave Chicken is a darling addition to Ethan T. Berlin's, How to Draw a Happy Cat. My seven year old loved the silly elements of the story and the simple drawing instructions. Jimbo Matison's illustrations make it easy for a beginning illustrator to draw their own characters. This book reminded me of the basic drawing instructions in Ed Emberley's books of my childhood. I can see it being very popular with younger readers. Being brave is difficult, but quick thinking will always save the day.

I was supplied a digital arc from Net Galley, but all thoughts and enthusiasm come sincerely from myself.

How haven't I seen these books before!?!?!? These are friggin adorable - and surprisingly helpful, too. My son wants me to draw stuff for him all the time but anything better than a smiley face is above my pay grade. Not anymore!

Seriously though, I will be purchasing this and How to Draw a Happy Cat!

Jimbo Matison's illustrations are super silly, so I think children of any age would get a kick out of this book and its storyline (which I was surprised it had, I thought it might only be a drawing guide). Might as well get it early on, more time to hone your newfound drawing skills.

{Thank you bunches to NetGalley, Ethan T. Berlin, Jimbo Matison and publisher for this eARC in exchange for my honest review!}

Do know how to draw a chicken? Maybe.

Do you know how to draw a brave chicken? No?

Don’t worry - we’ve got the book for you!

Ethan T. Berlin has a stellar five star read right here. He combines easy to follow art instructions with a story that manages to be silly and heartfelt all at the same time. I kept thinking, “Oh my gosh, my kids are going to love this!” This book has everything my boys love - drawing tutorials, dragons, a ton of silliness. It really couldn’t get any better. I can already see the boom being a regular the library.

This book was SO much fun to read! My kiddos are all older than the recommended age for this book, but I would totally recommend this book as a gift idea for kids or grandkids. I love the simple to follow instructions for drawing that are in the book, and I love the story that goes with the drawing instructions.

I wanted something 'simple' to draw for my grandkids to show them how easy it is to create something. A bit of a cheat but grandad has no artistic skills whatsoever! Brave chicken to the rescue. Thank you my favourite fowl.

a fun book with step by step pictures showing how to draw certain characters throughout the book. I thought the storyline was cute too!

"How to Draw a Brave Chicken" is a fun (and funny!) interactive book that guides the reader on how to draw different characters in the plot. If your kiddos like "Don't Press the Button" and "Dragons Love Tacos" then they will enjoy this playful tale of a brave chicken who needs a little help actually being brave.

We would have given it 5 stars but then we got almost to the end where we found a fart joke; it's a trope that just doesn't suit our taste.

It is one of those books where the cover truthfully represents the contents. Don’t know what to expect? Look at the cover.
Hilarious and interactive, this book interweaves storytelling and drawing.
The brave chicken is adorable.
Best suited for 4-7, however I am the mother of a 9 yo who loved this.

My almost six year old has been hoping for more books in the How to Draw a Happy Cat series, and he was thrilled to read How to Draw a Brave Chicken! Just as imaginative as its predecessor, this installment was silly, fun, and a delight to read! We hope that the ending of this book is a clue for the next book, just as the previous book was.

I cannot tell you HOW MANY TIMES my kid made me read “How to Draw a Happy Cat,” the first in this series. So when I saw this book up on Netgalley for ARCs, I requested IMMEDIATELY, and was so happy when I was allowed to read. It was the bedtime story pick that very night.

I adore the author’s drawing style, and how it’s integrated into the book. It’s a great way to introduce kids to breaking down objects into shapes, when sketching. Very simple, no skipped steps, and the end result is a reasonable level of detail for a kid.

The story is cute, with that same “Defying the narrator” humor from Happy Cat. Really, I’d expect nothing less from a chicken.

And it was a delight to also see characters from Happy Cat return! I wish this author many more amazing books in this series. :D And I’m sure I’ll be reading this one over and over again.

This is a sweet picture book to help kids learn to draw! I liked how the author made it easy for kids to use shapes to create the different drawings!

This is a cute little picture book that starts out the way a lot of books about drawing do, where they say, add this, and add that and then you have a chicken. Except in this book, the chicken takes things into their own hands, for example, hiding behind a bucket, rather than being brave.

But then the chicken does get brave, getting on a space ship to the moon. But finds a dragon there, and then the chicken tells you to drive an ice cream truck, so they can throw ice cream codes at the dragon. It goes on from there, with the chicken telling the illustrator what to draw next to get them out of situations.

A fun funny book, that kids will probably want to read over and over, as they enjoy the chicken getting a spine, and making things work out for them, in the end.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review. This book is coming out from Astra Publishing House the 27th of August 2024.

I love the concept of this book! A narrative with built-in drawing guides.

I would love to use this in my classroom - I think kids would get a kick out of learning to draw the several characters in this book and then create their own stories based on the same characters.

Great idea - more of this!!!

Title has not been added to StoryGraph for me to post a public review.

Great book! I thought it was a really smart idea how this was both a story and a how-to-draw book all in one. All of the step-by-step drawings were very easy to understand and follow, perfect for the audience. Additionally, the author and illustrator were clever to add characters and seamlessly include these walkthroughs for all of the new characters.
As for the story, it will definitely encourage kids to be creative, imaginative, and to think outside of the box, because that's exactly what the author demonstrated. Young kids will also have lots of fun reading this story because it is so unique and fun. On top of that, it will likely encourage kids to use the drawing techniques shown in this book to make their own fun drawings and stories. That means that this book has memorable material that can be used for other things, rather than just reading this book and being done with it.
Bravo!

Brilliant! Draw along with the author and illustrator as they try to help the chicken chicken to be brave. I really enjoyed both the story and the interactive element to this book and know the children at school would love it.

How to Draw a Brave Chicken is an absolutely adorable picture book. I LOVE that the book teaches children how to draw simple illustrations alongside all of the plot. The drawings are accessible and very cute. I found myself wanting to draw my own brave chicken whilst reading the book, and I'm an adult.

Thanks to NetGalley, Ethan Berlin & Jimbo Matison, and Astra Publishing House for the chance to read and review!

Consider this review to be the triumph of hope over experience. See, this picture book is a sequel to How to Draw a Happy Cat by the same author, Ethan T. Berlin, a book that made pretty much no sense, even if you’re a preschooler who suspends pretty much all imaginable disbelief. Because of that, I was pretty sure that the publisher’s comparison of How to Draw a Brave Chicken to We Don't Eat Our Classmates and Dragons Love Tacos was not going to hold up.

And it didn’t. That said How to Draw a Brave Chicken is much better than How to Draw a Happy Cat — not a big feat, but still. Here Chicken has an off-beat, funny adventure that coheres into an actual plot. Much improved!

Illustrator Jimbo Mattison (who illustrated also How to Draw a Happy Cat) gives perfect directions to little people wishing to learn how to draw not only poultry but plenty of other items she uses for her adventure. Mattison’s simple but cute illustrations make him a treasure. All in all four stars for the illustrator, two for Berlin, which averages out to three.

In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley, Astra Publishing House and Hippo Park in exchange for an honest review.
