Great introductory comic book for kids. The illustrations are bright and concise as well as the speech bubbles easy to read. I liked this story and found the spooky twist very cute. Thank you to NetGalley for the arc.
An adorable, light-hearted, and entertaining spooky story, a quick read with awesome and adorable art!
A sweet and very lightly spooky kid's graphic novel. Really great onomatopoeia and lettering, and really lovely and compelling art—especially the ghost skeletons, I loved them and wished they weren't invisible most of the time! I also love that the artsy musician sister, like all artsy musician sisters in all children's media, I'm pretty sure, casually wears a beret at all times.
I can see this as a good introduction to comics/graphic novels for younger folks. This book was relatively short and the story was not hard to follow. The story panels were clear cut and the art was engaging.
Tim and his cat, Frankie, enjoy recording sounds around the neighborhood, but his sister Martha is in a bad mood because she doesn't have any friends. To make friends, Martha was originally going to write a song for the talent show, but she gave up on it. To motivate Martha, Tim and Frankie decide to record spooky sounds for Martha's song.
This book was a short and sweet read. I'm not kidding when I say short. There are about as many words in this review as there are in the book, but that doesn't stop it from being a fantastic read! If you needed clarification as to why Martha needed spooky sounds of all things for her song, it was because Martha is this goth girl-type girl, and she loves writing spooky songs. The art style reminded me of Charlie Brown, who I loved a lot. Overall, I recommend this book to anyone who wants a short and sweet read.
A fun and spooky book for young readers (grades 1-3). This would be great for introducing or reinforcing the element of onomatopoeia for kids! The book is full of sounds as Tim is collecting them for his sister Martha to use in her music. Tim is feeling disappointed that he doesn't have great sounds for her, so he visits a spooky haunted house to see if he can record some great sounds for her. I love the relationship between siblings and how they come together in the end!
Hearing Things is such a cute, spooky, beginner graphic novel! This book is perfect for young readers to middle grade who want to start reading graphic novels, or anyone (like me), who enjoys artwork with a wholesome short story to go along with it! This book gets 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 from me! The art style is adorable and spooky at the same time!
This book publishes on September 3, 2024, right in time for autumn! 🍂 👻
Thank you @netgalley, @astrapublishinghouse, @toonbooks for an advanced copy!
Super cute for kids. I love the cat so much. Kids will definitely love this and it’s a good introduction to horror for our little readers. The illustrations are colorful, eye catching and engaging.
This was super cute! A fun little read that my little one will love. I enjoyed it as a quick read before bed, and I’m 35 haha!
Now that we’ve got this book, my child, and I, myself, as a writer will never have to worry about what sounds different items around us make, and what words to use to refer to those sounds.
Cute and original. Our favourite character was the cat.
3,5 stars.
Ben Sears created a fun little adventure great for beginning readers. Our main character loves recording sounds. His big sister is in need of some spooky ones so he sets out on a walk with his pet cat to find some. His cat wanders off and meets up with some skeletons where he hatches a plan to get some spooky sounds for his owner. This was wonderful! Looking forward to recommending this to all readers in my audience.
This is a graphic novel designed to engage and support children who are learning to read and it does this brilliantly. The story is very engaging, without having an overly complicated plot to follow. The characters are fun and communicate realistically with each other. The main thing for me though, is the artwork. I loved it. There is so much going on in every panel but the speech is reduced so this doesn't feel at all overwhelming. I can imagine using this book with students new to speaking English but am confident that this would be a popular book with the rest of the class too.
This is a kids book about a kid who is walking around his town collecting sounds. He goes to show his sister but she is depressed about not being able to make friends her own age. Her brother says she should join the talent show with her song but she is not for it so he goes around town looking for scary sounds and comes across a haunted house. This is a great story about helping his sister and finding cool sounds to use in music.
This one was SO cute, the art style was simply adorable, it's entertaining for both child and adult, and I'm fairly certain is will also help children not be afraid of the sounds the houses make at night (like the pipes, etc).
