This picture book offers the celebrity author's perspective on beauty standards and the importance of loving yourself. The takeaway message is to say affirmations about yourself, instead of saying negative judgments. The author also includes notes at the beginning and end for parents, offering her perspective about how to talk with kids about this topic.

This is fine, but it's very basic, and there are no illustrations. The text appears against a white background, with seemingly random choices for the color of the text and which words are emphasized. This reads like a social media post split up over lots of pages, and even though this will likely appeal to parents who are fans of Ashley Graham, the book doesn't say anything new or noteworthy, and won't visually engage kids.

Okay not to be a hater or anything but... why would anyone want to format a children's book like this? The page designs are boring, Graham picks the strangest words to be in the biggest fonts, and there's literally no art. It's just all words. What 5-9 year old would actually want to sit down and read this? The messaging is sweet and all and I think affirmations can be good and useful but you won't make a child want to use them by employing bland minimalist garbage.

This book is all words and no pictures. It's part of a series from DK. Personally, I prefer no picture books when they are fiction. I didn't click with the format of this book. But I think the overall message is positive and happy. I would recommend this book if you want to empower your child to recognize their inner beauty. It helps them create mantras and reinforces positive self-talk. It’s like a TedTalk for kids.

Thank you, DK, for the ARC,

Graham's background and story make her a great person to write this installment. She touches on the words that made her feel good and not good about herself, which many kids (and adults) will relate to, and her method for balancing those words with her own. ARC via NetGalley

Such a meaningful and effective book! I want to give some serious credit to the author's choice to include the notes at the beginning and the end of the book. The first note is one that encourages parents to read this WITH their kids. This is wildly important because I think that if kids read this book on their own it wouldn't have the same impact. On top of that, if parents read this with their kids that leaves more opportunity for parents to embed the teachings of this book into their kids' minds, because all of the points touched in this book are so, so important in today's world. Additionally, the author told readers her story without making it too confusing or advanced. She broke everything down into simpler sentences that are easier to comprehend, and gave definitions where they made sense. Bravo!
The only critique I have is I think that the design of the pages was a bit lacking. There were no pictures, which I understand might be a personal choice of the author, but I found that it lowers the engagement level of the reader. This is especially worthy to mention because this is a kids book. Kids like books with pictures because it is entertaining and fun to them.
Overall, though, bravo to the author for writing such a crucial book for kids.

This book for adults and children to read together teaches us how important our words shape our thoughts about ourselves. The author, Ashley Graham, speaks about her experiences as a model, where her job is to be “beautiful” on camera/film/runway. She teaches us about what affirmations are, then how to create our own, and then use them daily, making a lasting habit to change how we speak to ourselves. She believes that these affirmations help us feel good on the inside so we can radiate our own unique beauty outward, and I have to agree! I can’t wait to add the finished copy to our home library!

Thank you NetGalley, DK Children, and Ashley Graham for the early access copy of A Kids Book About Beauty.

A Kids Book About Beauty shows the importance of building children's confidence with self-love and believing in their own beauty, inside and out. It shows children how to love themselves by expressing positive affirmations and understanding that everyone is different. Ashley Graham does an excellent job expressing her experience when she was younger, and how positive affirmations can help keep a positive mindset of yourself.

This will be a great tool for libraries and schools to help tackle the topic of body image and creating positive affirmations about self-love.

Thank you to NetGalley and DK for the eArc!

This book was such a joy, I absolutely loved it. I love the practice of teaching kids about affirmations and practicing them as a group. Any story time where kids get to speak out or respond to the book is always a hit, and I can see this being a positive, and impactful book to read aloud. The language was easy and simple, and I love that definitions were added for some of the words that kids may not be familiar with like "couture" or "supermodel."

The only complaint I have is that I wish it had illustrations. I know this is the style of DK's "A Kids Book About" series but it reads very much like a minimalist coffee table book than a book for children. I just think some illustrations would make it so much more engaging. Nevertheless, I appreciated the bold use of color and shapes throughout the book, but I would probably only read it to 3rd through 5th graders as they'll probably be more engaged with it.

A great book to read with your kids, and I think a worthy investment for a library collection if you have some extra budget!

This is a fun concept and I am a fan of Ashley Graham. However, for a children's book, the lack of images really prevents younger children from being engaged. The affirmations are wonderful but they could truly be enhanced with images.

This is the book I wish my mom read to me when I was younger. Ashley has nailed the importance of affirming worthiness just as you are. I liked the layout of the book and the way she used examples of her own career. Well done! Five stars. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
