She’s here to help my daughter but she wants to steal my life. Sophie has a successful career, gorgeous husband and two beautiful children. Her daughter has been in trouble at school and won’t talk to Sophie. In a desperate attempt they hire a tutor for her. Deanna comes highly recommended, but she’s also young and gorgeous. Shes their last hope but does she have alternative plans. As things start to unravel Sophie’s perfect life slowly turns into a nightmare. An addictive psychological thriller. Just when you think you’ve got it sussed, there’s a nice little twist. An unputdownable novel. Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the chance to review.
OMG! What a read! Had to finish this as soon as I could.
Sophie Bartlett should have the best life - a loving husband Scott, two children, a fabulous house in London and a dream job as a presenter on Morning TV. Her husband Scott is the best at everything - fit, handsome, successful and very loving. But it starts unravelling. Her daughter Katie gets into more trouble at her exclusive West London school - a typical 12 year old girl playing up? Sophie’s producers wanting her to dress more provocatively, which goes against everything she has done before, and the feeling that she is losing it - forgetting things and feeling out of it.
Then Deanna appears - sent from heaven or hell - what does she really want? Is she just a tutor for Katie or is she trying to get Scott for herself?
The book follows Sophie and Deanna - who soon becomes someone that you’re not sure you would want in your corner. She tries being helpful to Sophie m, but what is her ulterior motive?
And what is Katie playing at? How does she know that Sophie is not her mother?
Sophie feels like she is falling - seeing things that no one else sees, going off the rails - how can this be happening?
A fast paced book that you have to finish. A great twist at the end.
Thanks to @netgalley for the advance copy.
Sophie and Scott appear to be happily married, both have good jobs and a lovely home. They have a son and daughter, and their life seems perfect. Katie, the 12 year old starts getting into trouble at school, and seems to be drawing away from Sophie. It is possible that her school will not allow her to return, so a tutor is arranged for her. Deanna seems the ideal person, she gets on well with Katie and is competent and pleasant, but Sophie feels something about her isn't right. Sophie wonders if Deanna isn't being too pleasant to Scott, and is trying to turn Sophies family against her, but why would she do that. Maybe Deanna wants what Sophie has... a perfect family, but how far will she go to get it.
This is a terrific psychological thriller, a really addictive page turner. Highly recommended.
Thank you #netgalley for allowing me to read this awesome book!
If I could give this more than five out of five stars then I would! Couldn’t put this down!!
Brilliant psychological thriller that’s fast-paced and keeps the reader thoroughly enthralled, from start to finish! It was a one-sitting read for me that had me reading right through the night into the early hours. Literally!
One of the best books I’ve read this year and thoroughly recommend it to anyone! I’m now going to buy more books by this author, who is new to me, but will now always be part of my personal library.
This is just my type of psychological thriller. It's based on a domestic setting, full of secrets, lies and untrustworthy characters.
"Homewrecker" is definitely the right title for this book. You've got the rebellious and uncontrollable teen Katie, the suspiciously overly available and invested tutor Deanna, the controlling and unpredictable husband Scott, and the clearly troubled, worried and stressed out mother Sophie. They all have potential, but when weird things start happening that leaves Sophie questioning everything, including her own sanity, who will show themselves to be the true homewrecker?
This is definitely the question that kept me reading and I'm glad I did because the ending was explosive, unexpected and exciting. It was an impressive twist that was well executed. I look forward to reading more books by this author as I'm sure I'll enjoy them.
This book was amazing, it kept me guessing what would happen and when. I thought I had the ending figured out but I was shocked. This book was well written and had a great plot, I can't wait for more by this author!
This book started off kind of slowly, and I was even debating if I should finish it, but I'm so glad that I stuck with it. Once the author seemed to find their groove, the pace really picked up and I was enjoying all of the twists, turns and suspense that I love in books like this. The ending was very satisfying. I found myself really enjoying this one!
Thank you, NetGalley, for the ARC!
Sophie and Scott have fabulous careers, a beautiful home and two wonderful children. That is, until twelve-year-old Katie starts causing lots of trouble at school and is sent home until a decision is made about if she can continue there.
Scott arranges for a tutor to help Katie until the decision is made. Deanna is good and Katie gets on well with her, but Sophie notices lots of changes once Deanna joins the household.
Can Sophie get her family back on track?
Goodness me! What a brilliant psychological thriller.
This book had everything I love in a good thriller: great characters, good storytelling, me sitting on the edge of my seat and biting my nails, as well as trying to remember to breathe!
The story does start off a little slow but builds up nicely. As for that ending - superb!
My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
"Homewrecker" tells the tumultuous story of Sophie, a successful local weatherwoman whose seemingly perfect life unravels when her daughter Katie is expelled from school. The introduction of Deanna, a young and beautiful live-in tutor, brings a whirlwind of suspicion and tension into Sophie's household.
The suspense in "Homewrecker" is palpable, with twists that keep the reader guessing. However, the portrayal of women in the novel can feel frustratingly stereotypical. Sophie is often depicted as a hysterical figure, existing primarily for the male gaze, which detracts from the depth of her character. Katie, though only twelve, behaves more like a rebellious teenager, adding to the discord within the story.
The plot is densely packed with characters, many of whom are involved in the central twist. This can sometimes feel overwhelming and detract from the intimacy of the narrative.
The ending is unique and unexpected, providing a satisfying conclusion to the story's buildup. The book is hard to put down, as it keeps the reader hooked with its unpredictable turns.
Overall, "Homewrecker" is a captivating read that delves into the fragility of a seemingly perfect life. Sophie's journey through suspicion and paranoia is compelling, even if the portrayal of her character and the overall treatment of women leave something to be desired. This book is worth a read for those who enjoy suspense and psychological twists.
A bit too many characters and a little bit too repetitive. The plot is full of twists so it’s not predictable at all. Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
WOW what did I just read
What a twist. Totally didn't expect it. Fantastic read. Couldn't put it down
Thank you for the opportunity to review
A TV presenter Mum, feeling the pressure of a busy life, needs some help and a tutor for her badly behaved teenager, but as soon as she takes someone on, things start to go wrong. Familiar? Well, this isn't that!! For a while I thought it was all playing out exactly as expected, as the tension slowly built like a pressure cooker about to explode and explode it did! WOW!
Sophie and Scott have a great life with their children, Chad and Katie, But when Katie is involved in a terrible incident at school and expelled, Sophie, already under pressure at work, as a woman of a certain age, is desperate for help. Enter Deanna and the start of a whole lot of gaslighting, making Sophie wonder if she's losing her mind. Any busy, working mum will find Sophie relatable and I really felt for her. She is lucky in that she has a lot of support from her husband and son, but her relationship with Katie is falling apart as Katie bonds with Deanna and then Scott starts to spend time with Deanna as well. Sophie fears she will lose her whole family, her career and her lifestyle, and then the past catches up with her, and OMG!
The first twist was such a huge shock, I had to remind myself to breathe! And as the truth was revealed, my mind was reeling! I could never in a million years have guessed the depth of this brilliant plot - fabulous!
4 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, J. M. Dalgiesh and Bookouture, for an ARC in return for an honest review.
Never judge a book - or, in this case, a person - by it's cover!
3.5 stars. This was just wild. What you think you know is going on, isn't truly what is going on. It's one of those stories that when you make it to the end, you want to go back and see if you had clues that you missed or if you just truly got bamboozled. While I didn't love where it ended up and you have to be willing to suspend belief, I can say the story is well told and I was 100% taken in by the misdirection.
Wow! Such a good read!
Home wrecker is the story of Sophie who seems to have a perfect life. She and her husband Scott have to hire a tutor, Deanna, for their daughter Katie when she gets in trouble at school (threatening to upset Sophie’s seemingly perfect life).
Things seem great until Deanna seems to be closer to her family than Sophie is.
This story was such a solid, well written thriller! The ending was shocking to me which was such a good surprise as a lot of times thrillers can be super predictable. I did feel like it was a bit of a slow burn but not in a bad way as I was always interested and wanting to know what would happen next!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this arc in exchange for my honest review.
A highly recommended thriller. Lots of plot twists and a surprising ending make this a gripping read.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an arc. All opinions are my own.
Homewrecker tells the story of Sophie who seems to have it all until her daughter Katie gets in trouble in school threatening her perfect life. Katie and her husband Scott hire Deanna as a tutor. She is young, beautiful, and on top of that her daughter and son love her. Soon enough, Scott decides to let Deanna move into their home, and Sophie realises that she may have set out to steal her family from her...
Wow, they weren't kidding when they said the ending was shocking!! Proceed with caution and cancel all your plans for the day, you won't put this book down!!!
The reason that I devoured this book is that it wasn't what it seemed, I do love a good 'cuckoo' book and this worked really well. The twists were brilliant and the examples of gaslighting worked really well. I also liked how it gave an insight into day time tv and the politics there.
It was a definite one session read for me.
This book was chock full of twists and turns and so many layers, I couldn’t keep up!! My first read from this author and i really enjoyed it. It packs a punch all the way through, this needs to go on everyone’s TBR pile!
Sophie, a successful local weather woman, seemingly has it all, until her daughter gets kicked out of school and they have to hire a live-in tutor. There is definitely some suspense in this book, but it really should have been titled “Gaslighting Sophie.” Women are treated kind of like hysterical beings that exist for the male gaze. The 12YO daughter is obnoxious and acts more like she is 17. I felt like there were too many characters in on the “twist” and it would have been nice to read the characters in different locations rather than just within 2 rooms in the same home. It definitely had a very unique ending.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this family drama thriller.
This is my first book by J.M.Dalgliesh and I really liked it. The main character, Sophie, is a strong female character, a characteristic I like in a book. The book is well written, easy to follow and full of unsuspecting twists. If you think you have it figured out you probably don't.
Sophie has the perfect life. Handsome, successful husband, two great kids, a great career and beautiful home. Things start to fall apart when daughter Katie gets into trouble at school and gets expelled. Desperate to help Katie, they hire Deanna as a tutor. Young, beautiful and fun Sophie's family is immediately taken in by her but Sophie is suspicious and vows to find out what she's up to. For the first time Sophie is in fear of losing all she worked so hard to achieve. She will not let that happen and sets out to find out what Deanna is hiding and just what she's after.
Full of secrets, lies and twists this book had me held captive. A perfect domestic thriller for thriller lovers.
