This book never left me itching to continue. It never made me want to pick it up when I put it down. At the same time, though, it was well-constructed, well-told, and had a properly stunning conclusion -- that part felt like Stevens. The rest didn't. Good book, just definitely not what I was expecting. As a contemporary novel, this would fare much better, in my opinion.
Emotional and intense, as you travel back and forth between different timelines, this novel captivates you from beginning to end. Though a bit longer than usual for this genre, the pace made it flow along nicely.
The story was decent, but there were too many chapters where nothing really happened, and the writing just wasn't that great.
Oh, how the emotions poured as I read this book. There were times I was worried about Toni and her friendships and relationship with her parents. There were times I had tears with the way Toni was being treated and how the death of her sister changed her path in life. There were times I was happy for Toni and proud of how she was handling the rough hand she was dealt. This was a quick read, I could not stand to put it down. I had to know what was going to happen next, would Toni ever be released from prison?
I have always loved a bad boy, Ryan fit that perfectly. The fact that Toni had a good family upbringing and was attracted to this bad boy made her so relatable to me. I disliked, but understood, that Ryan was a bad boy, in some part, due to his parent’s history, but there were things he did himself that gave him that label also. Toni and Ryan’s relationship was great. The sneaking out, the making out, and the teenage love between them was so real. I remember the first boy I thought I loved and could imagine all that I would have done to be able to see him.
I would recommend That Night to anyone looking for a fast paced thriller that is also a quick read.
