Thanks to NetGalley and RB Media for the advanced audiobook.
This was a devastating and compelling book about class, race, the American Dream, and what happens when that potential dream gets put in jeopardy. This wasn't a fast-paced thriller but it definitely kept me on the edge of my seat to see how things would end.
This story about the life of undocumented immigrant workers at an Arkansas chicken processing plant was absolutely riveting and harrowing. With unforgettable characters, this new to me author does such a great job showing how hard the life of these workers is, the terrible factory conditions they have no choice but to accept and the intersections between class, race and ambition that drives people to endure the unthinkable in order to pursue their dreams. Great on audio and highly recommended! Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early audio copy in exchange for my honest review!
This is an outstanding gritty story, I was riveted from beginning to end. The narrator did a great job bringing all of the characters to life. I'll never look at chicken the same way again.
Many thanks to NetGalley and RB Media for the free audiobook in exchange for my honest review. This is narrated by Victoria Villarreal who does a fantastic job! I highly recommend the audiobook!!!
This is not at all what I expected to read! Holy Crap this was good!! I read Ozark Dogs and enjoyed it but this is a whole other level of suspenseful and psychological mystery!
So the story is based in Arkansas at a chicken plant where the chickens are slaughtered and prepared for sale. We have the plant manager, Luke Jackson, who had a backwoods upbringing and is quite the perfectionist. He married his college sweetheart, Mimi, who suffers from post-partum depression and their infant son, Tuc. The story begins with Mimi trying to reach out to other moms with young kids who are similar to Mimi's situation.
Gabby works at the plant and is an undocumented Mexican-American who lived with Edwin. Gabby and Edwin both dropped out of high school to support themselves.
The characters are very well developed as is the story. I found myself completely sucked into the narrative and could not put it down. I listened to the entire book in one day and could not stop thinking about it. There is one event that is the catalyst for the actions of the characters and its very thickly layered! I hate spoilers so there are none here other than this is a very well written story that has a few twists I was not expecting.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
I love this type of gritty story. Such important issues being written about with so much care and attention to humanity in the characters. I flew thruogh this audiobook and will be singing it's praises to anyone that will listen.
This is the first book I've read by [author:Eli Cranor|18689995], but it won't be the last.
[book:Broiler|199412302] tells the tale of two families. You have a couple- Gabby and Edwin. They are undocumented immigrants who've worked at a local chicken processing plant since high school. Then there is the plant manager, Luke, his wife, Mimi, and their infant son, Tucker. Luke does whatever it takes to keep his plant successful. Gabby and Edwin work in horrendous conditions- wearing diapers because they are not allowed bathroom breaks. Luke fires Edwin for being two minutes late, setting off a series of events that will change everyone forever.
I read this through in one sitting- the author did a great job of building- and keeping- tension.
The biggest negative is that I learned a bit too much about chicken factories. I prefer to remain ignorant of those kinds of things.
My only other real criticism is the sudden POV changes. I listened to the audiobook and the POV would change mid-chapter without even a pause. Those changes are always difficult with an audiobook.
Victoria Villarreal narrates the audiobook. Other than the quick POV changes (I suppose she could have paused), she did a great job.
I received an advance audio copy in exchange for an honest review.
