This is a YA mystery book written from the perspective a 14 year old Ruth, and avid 'murder mystery' reader and fan of authors such as Agatha Christie. Ruth and her father are on a family weekend, visiting Ruth's Dad's now widowed step-Mother GG. Also staying are Vinka, an aunt and her partner and a half-aunt with her partner and son Dylan. Ruth is in the unfortunate position of having had a long standing crush on Dylan only to discover that his mother is her father's newly discovered 'half-sister'. The story is set in a small coastal town in Western Australia with most of the characters having travelled from Perth for the weekend.
There are some complex relationships in the book, and then there's a death under suspicious circumstances. Ruth with the assistance of Dylan, sets out to try and solve the mystery, but with so many family secrets in the way, Ruth sets off on a course to embarrass herself and most of the family as the secrets are unearthed.
My only criticism is the light hearted and 'comedic' remarks that started out funny soon became a bit tedious and annoying, but I am by no means in the target age bracket for the book. I think most young adults will thoroughly enjoy the book.
