I was absolutely blown away by this book. It is clear that the author, whose background is in community development work, has a wealth of knowledge to share. This book is for Christians who take seriously the Bible’s instruction to love and care for the poor, but aren’t sure exactly how to do it. The author makes clear the importance of listening to marginalized communities and involving them in any solution, rather than acting on their behalf. It explores the complex societal and personal issues that can lead to poverty, and emphasizes the fact that structural and systemic change is needed. While the author does not shy away from criticizing billionaires and prosperity gospel preachers, he gently encourages readers to also confront the fear and greed in their own hearts that may be keeping them from effectively loving their neighbours.
I would absolutely recommend this book to a Christian audience, and I think even secular readers might get a lot out of it. This would make an awesome book club pick or small group study.
Brian Humphreys has written quite a few books on his journey as a Christian (over 17 books in total!) He now pens his treatise on Peace based on his work in low income communities. Humphreys holds back no punches as he reveals that the need is for jobs - jobs that allow families to survive in our current economy. Humphreys provides steps for how the church can support these ventures and bring about true peace.
He doesn't quite call out capitalism, but it's hinted.
The call phrase for the book is. "Jesus calls us to seek shalom in the marketplace and neighborhood. It’s time to dismantle inequality and work for an equitable peace."
This is valuable reading for any person hoping for peace in our communities - our shared communities and world.
