See How They Hide is the sixth book in the Quinn and Costa series, focusing on Kara Quinn, Matt Costa, and the Mobile Response Team (MRT).
OMG OMG I’ve been waiting for this book! My girl Kara Quinn is back! I fell in love with this series, mainly because of the incredible characters Allison has once again brought to life and I've been anxiously awaiting this book!.
The story begins with two murders occurring at opposite ends of the country. As bodies start piling up, there seems to be nothing connecting the victims—except that they were all killed in the same manner and found with red poppies. Before long, the team is fully immersed in investigating a previously unknown cult called Havenwood. At the heart of the mystery is Riley, a former cult member who escaped after being an unwilling participant in its inner circle.
Kara is in Oregon while Matt investigates in Virginia, meaning they don’t spend as much time together as I’d like. That said, there’s plenty of Ryder and Dean in this book, which more than compensates. AND Catherine finally stops being an insufferable PITA—but only by the end, after annoying Kara at least twice. Despite her attitude, Catherine proves useful in the investigation, though I still despise how she speaks to Kara.
Kara and Matt’s growth throughout this book was so satisfying, and Riley plays a huge role in that. The picture she draws of them makes Kara realize that people see her in ways she never expected. Riley was also an exceptional secondary character, and I absolutely loved her conclusion in the story.
As always, I’d read anything Allison Brennan writes—even her grocery list—but See How They Hide delivers all the hallmarks of a classic AB novel: a tight, twist-filled police procedural, deeply compelling characters, and a villain who is as cruel as they come.

"See How They Hide" by Allison Brennan is the 6th book in her Kara Quinn series. This book hooks you on the first page and keeps you guessing throughout.
Kara is working a case with her team trying to figure out attacks that are miles apart and happen at the same time. As they dig deeper into the case they find more attacks that match but the clues are not adding up to help them solve the crimes. Matt is trying to coordinate his team to best solve the crimes and when a witness is found they start to make some headway. However, things beyond their control start to happen and they have to work fast before others end up hurt.
Highly recommend this book and the whole series.

So so good! Awesome police procedural with edge of seat ending.
~~~~~~~~
I love this series with Matt and Kara. My chief complaint is that we never get enough alone time with these two and Kara is such a tough nut to crack. She will not let her barriers down. That comes in handy when she’s working at what she does best, which is solving crimes.
This particular plot was super intriguing. I love the plot of this murder mystery. Twisted people have been emotionally stripped by a cult-type leader and the race to stop the crime spree is edge-of-your-seat action.
When it comes to police procedurals with crime, mystery, and all of the twists, Brennan does it right. You have characters that you love, characters you love to hate (for me, it’s Katherine), and plenty of twists to keep you on your toes.
See How They Hide is fast-paced and loaded with the unexpected. I just have to beg the author to please let Matt and Kara finally get some alone time and give them the relationship they truly deserve. You’re killing us all here.
This edge-of-your-seat murder mystery exposes the horrific truth behind a seemingly peaceful hidden community.
Kara was on top of her game. She read their witness, Riley, like a familiar, well-known book, and knew just what to ask and when. Even when Catherine tried her best to throw shade her way. Riley had so much stacked against her, but she came through for everyone when they needed her to.
The cult aspect of the story was interesting and disturbing and provided an excellent setting for this thrilling tale. Things started off kind of slow, but the pace picked up as more and more details were revealed. There were some flashbacks to the past through the eyes of Riley and some of the other cult members.
I loved Kara and Matt together and the way their relationship was progressing. They kept things as professional as they could when they were on the job, but their feelings for each other still came through in small but meaningful ways. Matt's trust in Kara was a beautiful thing to behold.
This series keeps amazing me at how the recurring characters get a chance at one point or another to experience serious personal growth in the midst of all the mayhem. I can recommend this book and this series if you like suspense, fast-moving police procedurals, and a bit of romance. It is definitely best to read these books in order.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Two similar murders on opposite sides of the country have Detective Kara Quinn and Special Agent Matt Costa and their team trying to figure out how the murders are connected and the significance of the red poppies covering the bodies. As more bodies are found, clues lead them to a place called Havenwood, a hidden compound nestled deep in the Rocky Mountains. Can they locate Havenwood and solve the crimes before anyone else is killed?
An edge-of-your seat thriller!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was another excellent outing with Quinn and Costa, blending a gripping thriller with growth from our main characters. I love the FBI team in this series but Brennan never neglects the other characters. They may only appear for a book but they are fully developed, people you can root for or against.
What a complicated case! I was hooked from the beginning. Kara and Matt and the team are back and I felt like I was right alongside them. There's action, suspense, twists, and great characters. Some you will love, some you will love to hate. *Cough* Catherine *cough* This is a must read author for me and this story is a prime example of why!
Pulse pounding adventure! Quinn and Costa are at it again when a few familiar looking cases catch their eye and let them know they have a connection on their hands to explore across the country. From the first page the drama is high and we go along for the ride as more pieces fall into place to show that each scene is connected and how. Once the core group is uncovered and we begin to learn the set up, it really gets intriguing. I really enjoyed the case and the outcome. I liked seeing the Quinn and Costa connection as always, but felt like it was a little light this time. We saw them thinking about each other and their life together more than we actually got to see them in the same room. I look forward to more to come from these two as their relationship deepens and life continues.
I recommend this book as well as the entire series to anyone who enjoys a cop procedural with gritty crimes occurring as they race against time to solve the case.
The case in this book was interesting. There were a lot of pieces to getting to the resolution. It was paced well and had an enough going on to keep me turning pages. This is the first book in the series that have read. The personal lives of the main characters is interesting but there wasn't a lot of backstory. While the book was good without reading the others, I think it would be better if I had read the others first. I like the author's writing style and will go back and read the others in this series. I received an advance copy from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Love the series with Detective Kara Quinn and FBI Special Agent Matt Costa! The 6th book does not disappoint in mystery, intrigue and suspense! This thriller will keep you turning pages way past bedtime! Definitely a 5 star!
This is a very suspenseful thriller in which the Mobile Response Team has their work cut out for them. They have few clues at the beginning and need to find what ties the murders together, other than the manner in which the two were killed. As more bodies turn up and then they find Riley Pierce, they start to get some answers but not all.
I loved how the team (mostly) worked together. The tension between Kara Quinn and Dr Catherine Jones added another layer to the story as well as the deepening of the relationship between Kara and Matt. We get also get to know the other members of the team better and see how the dynamic is challenged when an assistant director is brought in for his expertise.
Thank you to NetGalley, Harlequin and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Thank you to Harelquin Trade Publishing for an advanced copy of this book! I was so excited, I had to read it immediately.
I have loved every book in this series so far and this one was no exception! If you’re a fan of a complex team of characters solving crimes across the country, this one’s for you.
I loved the setting of See How They Hide, and the dynamic and mystery surrounding the community of Havenwood was unputdownable. I finished this within 2 days because it reads so well and I needed to know what happened next.
My only critique would be that I would love to dive in more to the ptersonal lives of the members of the MRT, but even so, I loved the bits and pieces we did get.
I can’t wait for more books in this series!!
In See How They Hide, Allison Brennan takes readers into the chilling depths of Havenwood, a community shrouded in mystery and tied to a string of gruesome murders. When two people are killed simultaneously on opposite sides of the country—each staged in identical fashion and surrounded by red poppies—Detective Kara Quinn and Special Agent Matt Costa lead the Mobile Response Team on a harrowing investigation. The search for connections between the victims unravels a web of secrets, with the enigmatic Havenwood at its center.
Despite the intriguing premise and potential for high-stakes suspense, See How They Hide feels like the weakest entry in Brennan’s series. The narrative suffers significantly from the physical separation of Kara and Matt. Their dynamic relationship has always been a cornerstone of the series, and having them work apart for the majority of the book detracts from the story’s cohesion and emotional engagement.
The case itself feels lackluster and uninspired. While Brennan introduces unsettling elements tied to Havenwood, the investigation takes too long to gain traction. The plot doesn’t pick up steam until the last 20% of the book, making much of the reading experience slow and unengaging.
On a more positive note, Catherine’s long-overdue change in attitude toward Kara was a refreshing moment—but coming six books into the series, it felt far too late to make much of an impact.
Ultimately, See How They Hide struggles to deliver the compelling mystery and character dynamics that have made previous instalments in the series so enjoyable. While Brennan’s writing remains polished, the sluggish pacing and multiple location storylines make this book one of the less memorable entries in the series.
Recommendation: Fans of the series may want to read See How They Hide to stay updated on the characters, but it’s unlikely to become a favorite. If you’re new to the series, start with an earlier instalment to experience the full strength of Brennan’s storytelling.
Two people were murdered—at the exact same time, in the same gruesome manner, bodies covered in the same red poppies…but on opposite sides of the country. With Detective Kara Quinn investigating in Oregon and Special Agent Matt Costa in Virginia, the Mobile Response Team digs deep to uncover more about each victim. What is the link between the two, and why were they targeted?
As with all Allison Brennan’s books, this is a bit too long. It doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy her books, I just find them longer than they need to be. And to be honest, I think this is one of my favorites by her.
There are a lot of intriguing aspects in this novel. I enjoyed the cult! This just made the story more dramatic and intense! Then there is Riley. She is a great character. She has had a life full of trauma and discord. She is truly struggling. Kara knows to handle her with kid gloves.
This is book 6 in the Quinn and Costa series. It is not necessary that you read them in order. They are stand alone books.
I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review.
This book was not a slow burn it kept me captivated from the start. I enjoyed the story of the living conditions that was being escaped from and the mystery of who they were looking for
See How They Hide is the sixth installment in the Quinn and Costa series by Allison Brennan. The book opens with two murders on opposite sides of the country that have the same MO but nothing obvious connects the victims. The MRT are called in to investigate and the more information they uncover the more questions arise.
I enjoy Brennan’s writing style and her characters and this book was no different. The plot was also different from many, so I enjoyed that aspect as well. Excited to see where Quinn and Costa go next!
I don't think Allison Brennan can write a bad book. She is definitely a must read for me. My only complaint is that there is not enough Kara - Matt together time in this one. While there wasn't much of a mystery, the suspense was a slow burn that just turned up the heat to the dramatic ending. Brennan did extensive research on the pathology of cults, and it shows.
With a body count that would rival Karen Rose, Allison Brennan has the team spread all over the country with no answers, only more dead bodies. Fake identities and living under the radar have kept a group of people alive, but somehow, they have now been discovered and are being murdered, their throats slit, and bodies covered in red poppies. The team is stretched to the limit and the murderers are a step ahead of them.
As Kara Quinn starts to piece together what is happening, she is challenged by the team psychiatrist. I don't like Catherine. As a psychiatrist with a bunch of letters after her name she doesn't like Kara, who was only a lowly Los Angeles police detective. Catherine also doesn't think Kara is good enough for Matt, who once dated Catherine's sister. I doubt Catherine would think any woman would be good enough for Matt. Kara is her own person and makes no excuses for herself or her actions and her instincts are spot on.
Kara has developed a bond with Riley, one of the escapees from a community called Havenwood which is at the center of what is going on. Not quite a cult, but definitely an isolated community in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado that no one is quite sure where it is. Now Kara is being micromanaged by both Catherine and the FBI's second in command at Quantico, Dean Montero, an expert in cults. Kara is well aware of her short comings, in the eyes of the FBI, but no one has her instincts and that counts for a whole lot especially when thing go sideways, and Matt is in danger.
My thanks to the Publisher and the Author for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.
The beginning had my attention, and I liked the premise but the middle was kind of boring and drawn out. I haven’t read any of the other books in the series so that may also be a factor in me not loving it.
Good addition to the Quinn and Costa series. Good story and the psychology behind the cult was interesting. Great characters and developments as the series grows.
Many thanks to Netgalley for this book. I received this book in exchange for my honest review. My thoughts are entirely my own.
Kara Quinn and team are looking into some strange murders where the victims throats are slit and their bodies are covered in poppy petals which turn out to be symbolic. Kara sees Riley Pierce who is the best friend and roommate to Jane who both escaped from Havenswood which Riley’s mother Calliope basically turned into a prison and killed everyone who tried to escape. Riley’s aunt Thalia helped people escape and get new identities and disappear. Calliope sent people in her inner circle to kill the people who escaped over the years using poppies to send a message to Thalia in order to draw her out. After Matt is kidnapped after they find Riley and learn about Havenswood the FBI and SWAT teams go and try and rescue him. After Matt is saved Riley confronts her mother who is shot by Evan after realizing how much she lied and manipulated him.
