I’ve been reading this author for literally decades, and I was happy to start this one as I’ve been reading about the Krewe et al for a while. I started this and was drawn in pretty quickly. From then on, though, I was entertained but not drawn in too much. I didn’t really feel the chemistry between the two main characters, the way they “found” a lead was a little too deus ex machina, and there wasn’t much paranormal at all other than talking with a couple ghosts, and that even seemed a little blah. I don’t know if it’s because I feel like I’m in a book slump at the moment, or I’m just not feeling the need to read (that hardly ever happens). Overall, this book is well-written, interesting, and has a good plot, but it just felt a little too contrived and if I read the history of Elizabeth Bathory one more time, I would have thought it was six times too many. This book is OK to me but not bad at all even if this review reads like it’s awful, it’s not. 3 ½ stars. It’s OK. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
Heather Graham has always been my favorite author. Sadly I have noticed with the Blackbird books they are not as good as her Krewe of hunters books. They are repetitive, the detectives kept going back to the same places and doing the same things. The romantic element has also decreased.
I want to thank Netgalley, Heather Graham and Harlequin Trade Publishing for the chance to read in advance The Legacy of Blood.
The main characters in this book seem like normal people who like their jobs. The supporting characters really make this story excellent. I couldn't put it down. I am now going to be interested in reading the first 2 books in this series.
In this book the twists are ones I didn't expect. I tried to figure out who the bad person was a boy was I off on it. I never expected the ending of this book. I a glad to see how two of the characters developed into a great team. I hope to see more of those two in more books.
I find it a must read if you want to be kept thinking and wondering if you have it figured out.
I always love the history lessons found in Heather Graham’s books. It’s a very twisty path to get to the truth. We travel from Paris to Reims in France. The scenery is beautifully described. The book flowed smoothly. It’s a masterly craft of writing. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.
The Blackbird international branch of the Krewe is now in France after young women’s bodies are being found, drained of blood. This time, there are no signs of teeth marks, so the team doesn’t believe it is related to fake vampires. The hunt leads them to the town of Reim and three of the smaller vineyards. As they dig deeper, Jeanette and her partner Daniel are helped by ghostly friends, but they are still unsure of their quarry. As more bodies are found, they realize the killings have been going on for years and bear similarities to the atrocities of Elizabeth Bathory, the blood countess.
As always, Heather Graham has done an excellent job of weaving history, romance, and mystery to create an exciting, fun read.
Thanks to Harlequin Trade Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC.
I have really enjoyed reading Heather Graham as an author since she started writing her Harlequin Romances. I fell in love with her Krewe of Hunters series and have devoured every one of them. I have even read them more than once. So, I couldn’t wait to see what she did with the International Krewe of Hunters called the Blackbirds. I have really liked the series so far and especially with making connections with the characters and having them pop in and out of each story. Jeanette LaFarge and Daniel Murray, agents of the Blackbird group have been called in by the French police to help investigate three murders where the bodies of young woman have been drained of all their blood and left in the fields of wine country. The press is saying that a vampire is on the loose, but Jeanette and Daniel know that there is a real live person behind these killings. Read and find out if Jeanette and Daniel and other members of the Blackbird team can solve these bizarre murders. Will Jeanette and Daniel find romance while searching for a killer? Thank you to Mira and Netgalley for providing me with an advanced reader’s copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. 3.5 stars but push it up to 4 stars.
Heather Graham is in a class by herself. She has written so many books even before the Krewe of Hunters. Many of those books I have read and enjoyed and marveled that she could still come up with fresh ideas after so many books. The Blackbird Files have been unique, fun, and borrowed from history. We’ve all heard the expression about if we don’t learn from history, we will repeat in. For the criminals in this series, they have learned from history to repeat it with their own modern-day twist.
This book was another example of why Heather Graham’s book continue to be devoured by readers, me included. As with the other Blackbird Files stories, we are given a lovely locale described in such a way to make it real for us. It also sounds like a great tourist destination if not for the murders. Paris and wine country provide the backdrop for this ripped from history violent recreations of indescribable crimes. Victims drained of blood and tortured and similarities to a past crime by the Blood Countess kept me turning the page guessing which clues to follow and which to ignore as red herrings. The Blook Countess was described as vile, so it was easy to narrow in on a possible killer based solely on personality, but suspicions were not enough. We traveled along with the expanding Blackbird teams to gather clues and ultimately save more people from the horrible fate.
We had the entire Blackbird gang back together from all 5 previous books as well as Daniel who proved to be very endearing in the last 2 as he came into his gift. Jeanette’s empathy made her a perfect addition to the team as she seemed gifted in drawing people (both living and ghosts) into a trusted conversation to gain help. It would not be a Krewe book without name dropping Jackson, Angela, and Adam. The entire team was needed as the victim pool was vast as was the suspect pool and the locations involved. That kept the drama up throughout the story. This was quite the roller-coaster ride with history and modern times colliding in murder.
The worst part about this book is reading it and knowing this is the last Blackbird Files book until 2025. I absolutely love the format these stories have taken and hope the Blackbird team keeps investigating these stories with a historical twist. The Krewe of Hunters series comes highly recommended. While there is an order to the books, they can be read standalone, but I would suggest reading them all. You will not be disappointed.
Thanks to NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for the opportunity to read this ARC.

This is the third book in a series and also could be read as a standalone.
A well-written paranormal detective mystery that was creepy as well as intense. This story offers something for all types of readers. I devoured it in several hours & it’s my favorite so far!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
