"Suzume" follows the story of a teen girl who accidentally messes with a portal that lets out giant earthquake causing worms. In order to put things right, she goes on an adventure across Japan with a man turned sentient chair to find the keystone who can permanently close all the doors and stop the chaos she has unwittingly started.
This story is great! Super creative, in the magical realism genre. The artwork is really detailed and the story makes it clear what is going on. The biggest thing I would say is, just watch the movie. The story is the exact same, but is even more special in the movie due to it being in color, with voice acting. I also think this should have just been combined into one large novel instead of breaking the story up into 2 or 3 novels.
I highly recommend "Suzume" to YA and fantasy readers. It's a unique and fast paced adventure that anyone can enjoy!
4/5 stars
5 stars. I can't believe this gem is released! I was a pretty big fan of the movie. The colors are beautiful. The style is a bit unusual.
I think this is a faithful adaptation of the film, the art is well done and easy to follow. I liked the storyline as well when I watched the movie, so I already knew I'd enjoy that aspect. I think so far the manga adaptation is doing a great job in its execution.
*I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.*
I know there is a film adaption of this manga and since I wasn't sure if I should watch it or not and saw that this book was available on NetGalley I decided to just give it a try.
The idea is very unique and interesting, especially as we not only have doors that led to somewhere completely else but also ruin stones that take form when one touches them. I think that the cat in this manga is drawn very good, like the different colour patterns and detail for the eyes. The other characters were drawn quite good too. We got to know lots of characters and they were all kind of Suzume's and Souta's journey and helped her out. The twins were quite funny.
Only thing I really disliked was that one scene where Souta was sleeping and instead of waking him up normally she got the idea of kissing him. If they wouldn't have such a great age gap (teenager and adult) I would have found it funny, but that moment was rather weird and not something I would have liked to read. To be honest their whole relationship seemed a bit out of place, especially how they met and how he just tries to get rid of her and she doesn't stop. I never understood that concept of anime characters getting out of nowhere the desire to help and be pushy about it and run away from home 'cause an adventure is waiting for them.
End note/Final thoughts:
Thank you Kodansha Comics for the advanced reader copy of Suzume Vol. 1 by Makoto Shinkai and Denki Amashima.

i loved this movie and the manga adaptation is just as beautiful! i was sucked back in by the first page!
If you are familiar with Suzume, this first instalment will bring you back into its curious world.
If you are not familiar, this is a great start.
Judging by where this book ended, we will have at least a second and perhaps a third instalment?
The art style is amazing.
The plot and the concept are 4.5 stars.
Suzume is 5 stars herself.
The twins are 100/5 stars.
Amazing first volume, going to continue them and watch the anime. Highly recommend, can't wait to see where it goes.
I was so thankful of @kodanshamanga for being able to receive a early e-copy of @makoto.shinkai newest manga Suzume from @netgalley . I highly recommend this manga!! I really feel its the best story I have read of Makoto Shinkai. I was automatically pulled into the story of Suzume and Souta while they travel around looking for the lost keystone to the door Suzume opens accidently in the first few pages. The keystone takes the appearance of a cat and they are only able to track him through social media. Through the story Suzume gets into a lot of things and also helps out people along the way. Over all it was a amazing story and cant wait to continue the story.
Anyone who is interested in this story "Suzume" will be released by Kodansha Comics on September 24, 2024

I watched this movie in theatres when it first came out and I loved it!
Makoto Shinkai's work is a new staple in my heart. Their stories drive your heart wild with ache and hope for the characters and the moments you can see from your own life.
The manga version is just as amazing and continues to capture this story's spark.
3.5 Out Of 5 Star
It was on okay start to a manga series but after a few chapters it started to lose my attention.
As a first volume, this was fine. But first volumes of manga are kind of hard to judge. I should probably watch the movie; the concept was not captivating me. But, again, that's a first volume for you.
Thanks for letting me read the arc of this manga.
I saw Suzume at the cinema and I was very fascinated by her. I would like to know more about the world that we are shown, I hope that in the manga there is some more news than in the film. At the moment this first volume is identical to the first part of the film.
Beautiful
Can confirm that the chair man is just as attractive here as he was in the movie. This was a really fun way to get to expand the story of the movie a little bit.
This one was brilliant, of course. I'd already watched the film based on it, which was great as well, hence why I wanted to read it. Amazing art style, and great translation.
Watched the film last year and now read the manga, they are the same (obviously) but in the end I was questioning whether they added new characters or just less than four hours of sleep is messing with my memory
But no matter totally like film the film or not I enjoyed it because I had enjoyed the film as well😅😅
Thanks to Netgalley and Kodansha for providing this eARC in exchange for an honest review!!
The movie is my all time favourite and the manga is every bit as gorgeous as it!!
I highly recommend checking this out!!
