Having loved the film I was eager to try the manga and delighted to find I was just as engaged. It's impossible to describe the plot without sounding like a fairytale but perhaps fitting so: standing alone there is a door, and beyond that door waits the worm, a power so large it could break the world. Suzume, an ordinary girl in an extraordinary situation must find the keystone to close the door and contain the worm aided by, or aiding depending on your view, a three legged chair (previously mysterious young man). A lovely start with great line work, this story will charm fans of the film and the uninitiated alike.

If you are a fan of anime Suzume will not disappoint! I watched the anime a couple of months ago and loved it! This is the exact same story just in manga form. It was just so nice to go back to this story. If you liked the anime and need a refresh, I highly recommend this. It does not disappoint. I'm looking forward to reading the next volume when it comes out. I may have to watch the movie again beforehand.

This is a magically little story. Daijin is a cute little troublemaker who is the key to stopping what will happen. Suzume begins her journey when she meets Souta, a mysterious stranger. The two travel together to find Daijin and to ultimately stop what is going to happen.

I really loved the beautiful artwork. The manga flows nicely with the story telling, there is no confusion to what is going on, just a little mystery surrounding it.

I had previously seen the movie, but reading it and getting to live it over again is such a surreal experience. I’m absolutely in love with this manga and getting to see the chair and suzume try to save the world all over again. Made me sob a second time.

This first volume of Suzume sucked me right in. The story really flows, unexpectedly fuuny but also emotional at times. I really want to see where Suzume and Souta's journey will take them. This is a great start.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me this eARC to review!

This was so good in movie form, I was really excited it in manga form. Also SO good. I missed these two so it was nice to get back to them. Now I want to watch the movie again, hehe.

Thank you NetGalley and Kodansha Comics | Vertical Comics for the ARC of this manga!

Having loved the film version, I was thrilled to have an early access copy of the manga. The art style is lovely and the translation is perfect. I loved how faithful it was to the film version while also throwing in some additionals to help flesh out the story.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me read an advanced copy of this manga!

I had so much fun reading this volume that I ended up watching the movie after finishing this, which means that I genuinely didn't remember where this left off. So I started a re-read, though I haven't finished this one I will say that Suzume was such a refreshing main character to follow and I adored her relationship with her aunt. I would've appreciated a little less in the interactions between her and Souta though because even with him being turned into a chair for the most part, I've seen too many ship edits of those too when the age gap is so uncomfortable for anything other than platonic.

It took a bit for me to like Dajin but that was mostly resolved in the movie, I look forward to seeing how the story will be adjusted for print. I already noticed little things here and there being different from the film like the beginning interactions with Suzume and her friends talking about the ruins, or how Souta was a lot more vocal about his problems getting turned into a chair, and a little less willing to ask for help when he clearly needed it.

I'm looking forward to volume two, sincerely counting down until that gets released. Very glad I read this.

The story is really lovely. It's not your usual fantasy story. It's very cozy and fun! Young readers and adults alike will surely love this breathtaking manga + the art is beautiful. Looking forward to read more of Suzume.

A very fun quirky short manga by the amazing creator of "Your Name". The dynamic between the two main character is to die for and the art is just gorgeous. A very interesting plot of a young girl exploring a world beyond time and place. Looking forward to read the next volume as well.

The premise for Suzume sounds really interesting, but I feel like the execution is kind of lacking. Like a C lot of anime plots, Suzume meets a handsome stranger that she knows nothing about and decides to follow him blindly into an adventure. We know nothing about this guy and we don’t end up knowing anything by the end of the first volume but it’s a common trope so I was willing to roll with that one. So there is a magical world that only grumpy hot guy, Souta, can see and now without explanation, so can Suzume. Again, completely standard so I’ll go with it. That’s about all we get to know. There are some other things that happen fast without explanation that I don’t want to spoil.

However, you know what does get a majority of the time, interacting with random characters on the adventure that you’ll probably never see again. The biggest problem is that the things that need explained aren’t, and the mundane that aren’t exciting drag too long. Also, I don’t know if it’s because I’m older than when I originally got into anime & manga and liked it in my teens, but the whole story ands how the charters react is really unbelievable. Everyone is way too trusting and unrealistic just to add to the story. Suzume is a little bit of an insipid love struck idiot. I normally like female based manga, but this one just isn’t it.

Note: This would be fine in a middle school library. A few swear words but no situations that aren’t G rated. Maybe at 40 I’m just not the intended audience.

Absolutely gorgeous art in this new manga series inspired by one of my favourite anime films Suzume. If you enjoy whimsical manga and lovely artwork, or if you were a fan of the film I highly recommend this for you.

The art is great and the story flows smoothly, but it isn't my cup of tea. It was certainly worth trying.

Vertical Comics was kind enough to provide me with an advanced reading copy via Netgalley for an honest review.

I have not seen the movie this manga was adapted from yet, but the illustrations were remarkably well done. I was a bit thrown off in the beginning, when Suzume quickly oscillates between school and the abandoned spa. I imagine in the movie, this is a more seamless transition. That being said, the inclusion of Suzume's past filtering into the present made it a really intriguing read. At first, I wasn't particularly interested in the stranger or the door, but I wanted to know what had happened to Suzume as a child. As I continued reading, I became more invested. I think I might have enjoyed it more if I had seen the movie first, but it was still very well done.

I was excited to see that, just like "Your Name," this title has been adapted into a manga series. While some of the striking visual elements from the film are inevitably lost in this format, I wholeheartedly recommend it as a way to revisit and relive the story.
I found the first volume to be quite enjoyable. The manga provides a closer look at the characters' expressions and presents the plot in a more detailed and linear way compared to the film.
For fans of the movie who are considering whether to pick up the manga, keep in mind it doesn’t add any new info—it’s mostly just another way to experience the same tale. So, if you skip it, you’re not missing out on anything major. It's more like reading the sketch of the movie.

thanks netgalley for the free ebook copy of the English translation of this manga, this is an honest review. I believe the manga in English will be officially publish on sep 24 of this year.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I requested this book because I loved the anime movie Suzume that came out a couple years ago. It is one of the most beautiful stories I've seen in a long time. I thought maybe this would build off of the movie, but it truly is the exact same story. Volume 1 goes to about the first third of the movie. The artwork is very good in the book, but I think I would prefer to watch the movie instead of read this manga, personally.

When I picked this up, I didn't realize it was a manga adaptation of the movie. I haven't watched the movie, and I've only seen trailers and random clips, so I can't fully compare the two just yet. A plucky teenager named Suzume accidentally meets a handsome stranger on the way to school, and it leads to her going on an adventure of a lifetime. The plot pacing for the first volume is a bit off. It starts off slow and slowly ramps up, but somewhere in the middle, it feels like the pace just slams to a stop before jerkily starting up again. I assume this pacing works better in the movie, but again, can't compare. I really adored the art, however. The art was honestly the high point of this story for me!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to review this arc.

I loved following Suzume’s and Souta’s journey. Overall a sweet little manga I enjoyed all the characters. Can’t wait to watch the movie now.
