The story of a woman and her experiences over the 3 days of her daughter's wedding. Enjoyable, quick read
“Three Days in June” by Anne Tyler is a sensitive, heartfelt and emotional story about the realities of love and marriage. The story revolves around a 61 year old women who looses her job the same weekend as her daughter’s wedding. Her ex husband arrives on her doorstep with a cat and expects to stay with her for the wedding weekend. She is socially awkward and often misunderstood and I became invested in her journey to become aware of herself and her complex relationships.
This is a short book that gives great insight into human nature. This author writes so beautifully about family dynamics and real life issues that I powered through this novel in one sitting. If you enjoy Anne Tyler or books that have you thinking about their messages long after you finish, this book is for you!
Thank you NetGalley and Knopf, Pantheon, Vintage, and Anchor for the ARC of this book on exchange for my honest review.
Unfortunately, I only made it halfway through this book before I gave up. I’ve loved most of Anne Tyler’s novels and she’s no doubt extremely talented, but I just couldn’t make myself care about the characters or the lackluster story.
Thank you to NetGalley for the advance ecopy of this title. Anne Tyler has written another book that showcases her economy of writing style. It is a quick read that draws you into a small family for the three day period during which the daughter gets married. Tyler provides great insight into the thoughts of the characters, and weaves the trajectory of their lives seamlessly into the narrative. Highly recommend.
As a huge Anne Tyler fan, I jumped at the chance to get a sneak peek of Three Days in June. As always, she sprinkles her novels with lovable, perky, and unforgettable characters. This one did not disappoint.
I marvel at the way the author paints such a great picture of her characters largely using creative dialogue.
This character development rich novel takes us through three days of her life as she moves through her only daughter’s wedding event. Told entirely from the viewpoint of the mother of the bride, tensions are balanced with insight and universal truths.
Quick read as I devoured in two short sessions. If you love Anne Tyler, you’ll love this.
If you haven’t read Anne Tyler, start with this one, and I’ll bet you a crab dip appetizer it won’t be the last!
Thanks to Knopf for providing this ARC :):):):)
Classic Anne Tyler!
Comfortable characters, emotive writing, classic observations.
With thanks to NetGalley & Knopf for this e-ARC!
I love Anne Tyler’s books and this is now one of my very favorites. Gail is a divorced woman and the book describes the three days leading to her only daughter’s wedding. It’s quirky. It’s funny. It’s wonderful. There’s an ex-husband and his foster cat. I loved every word of these three days. Wish it was called “Ten Days in June” — That’s how much I didn’t want it to end. I don’t know how Tyler does it but she is able to make her characters relatable and yet wholly original. This book is a gift. Pre-order/reserve now. You’ll love it. Thanks to Knopf for sending me an advanced copy.
This is a short book, able to be read in a leisurely Saturday. It did not disappoint. Anne Tyler draws you immediately to her main character, Gail, who loses her job at 61, must deal with her daughter's wedding, and finds her ex and a cat on her doorstep. Through the three days of Gail's life, the reader learns of Gail's personality and her social awkwardness. But you also learn that she is able to give --something her ex-husband knows better than she does. I love the sentences of Tyler. I love her glimpses into ordinary life where most of us love and struggle. Perhaps, at the end of the short novel, Gail is permitting herself to find a new path or an old one after only three days. Thanks to NetGalley for the arc.
The eponymous three days span the wedding of Gail and ex-husband Max’s only daughter, Debbie. A quick 176 pages manage to encompass the potential perils of Debbie’s marriage and the complete history of Gail and Max’s complex and misunderstood relationship. Deeply character driven — I love that I was so interested in every single character even though I didn’t really like that many of them. To be clear, none of the characters were “bad” people, just mildly irritating and not my types!
The blurb labels Gail as “socially awkward” and that is certainly true, but more to the point, Gail never really seemed to understand herself, especially in relation to others. As the history is retold — in concise, clear, essential prose — we the reader gain the insight that Gail never had, until in a clarifying moment, she finally does. It is brilliantly done.
This novel tells the story of Gail, the MOB, during 3 days surrounding her daughter’s wedding.
Gail feels like an outsider at her only daughter’s wedding, she learns she’s being passed over at work, her daughter shares a disturbing revelation, and her ex shows up at her doorstep with a foster cat.
Gail must navigate these events, and as she does so she reflects on the past and gains clarity on her future. The characteristic Tyler wisdom & subtle humor are here and at less than 200 pages, I easily read this book in one day. So much is said in so few pages, the mark of an excellent author.
Anne Tyler’s depiction of human nature and her observations about the world are excellent. She’s one of a handful of authors who can write about the ordinary in an extraordinary way, with flawed but sympathetic characters.
Another winner from Anne Tyler!
Another wonderful book from Anne Tyler, which is sure to be very popular among her regular readers, and should also attract new readers with its appealing cast of quirky, multigenerational characters and a cozy Baltimore setting. It takes place in the space of three days, with Gail Baines, newly 60, preparing for the wedding of her only child, Debbie. It's the day before, the day of, and the day after the wedding. Gail is socially awkward to begin with, and as the book opens, she is pretty sure she has just lost her school admin job. Things don't improve with the arrival of her ex-husband, who has decided he needs to stay at her house instead of Debbie's, because he has brought along a foster cat who Debbie's fiance is allergic to. She manages to navigate the weekend, and we are right with her -- this is a book that is hard to put down, as we care so much about the characters and the author is a great storyteller. I look forward to recommending it.
Three Days in June by Anne Tyler is a short (176 pages), sparely written, charming and heart felt story. The author does a beautiful job developing each character fully but simply. The FMC, Gail Baines, is a socially awkward, often funny, divorced 61 year old managing her feelings in the 3 days surrounding her only daughter’s wedding. Over the course of the book, she explores the breakup of her marriage and her fears for her future. I adored her ex-husband, Max, who sees and understands Gail for who she is even before she does. This was utterly charming and the ending was chefs kiss. 5/5⭐️
Thank you to NetGalley and Knopf Publishing for an advanced copy. All opinions are my own. Available 2/11/25
I tried not to be prejudiced in reading this pre-release copy of Three Days in June, but two pages in, I succumbed to the Tyler spell. That spell includes complex and often contrary characters, quirkiness, decisions that might be looked at askance later, and the Tyleresque warmth that keeps me prejudiced. This is a short book, but it will earn your attention.
If you have read Elizabeth Strout’s Olive Kitteridge, you’ll see a companion soul in the protagonist here, a woman of quick judgement on things as small as how a person parks and as large as the nature of love. Gail Baines produces gasps of irritation and nods of agreement in the reader, sometimes in the same paragraph. The book centers around her daughter’s wedding (the second of the three days), her strong urges to advise, upbraid and console her daughter, perhaps all unnecessary in the strategic sense, but haunting Gail, due to some unconfirmed, significant conflicts in the daughter's romance, which harken back to Gail’s own.
Oh, I can’t forget one of Anne Tyler’s greatest waves of the wand: she is funny. She is consistently funny in both the narrative observations, the interior monologues of Gail, and in the playing out of circumstance. If you haven’t read The Accidental Tourist or Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, do yourself the full favor.
This is about a mother and daughter a few days before the daughter's wedding. it s a short story rather than a longer book.
I struggle to enjoy Anne Tyler’s writing voice. I thought I was a fan but starting this helped me remember having the same trouble with her other titles. There is something that is stilted or foreign or mildly old fashioned about her descriptions and dialogue. This doesn’t seem set in American modern times.
As a fan of Anne Tyler’s previous novel French Braid, I immediately requested an ARC of her new novel Three Days in June. This story is engaging from the start, and I found the characters to be well-written. Given the story takes place over three days leading up to a wedding, it moved rather quickly. Although it’s a short book, I couldn’t help but fall for the main character (mother) and her ex-husband. A delightful, but deep read that I won’t soon forget.
Really enjoyed this book. Haven’t read Anne Tyler in awhile and this story was so well told. Great. Will recommend it to others.
This was a long short story rather than a full blown novel. All of the author’s books have a similar feel with characters that are slightly flawed which you makes you more invested in their story. This was engaging, nothing special. I received an ARC from the publisher through NetGalley, this did not influence my opinion.
Fun and quick reading with an unpredictable ending. I just wished characters were a bit more elaborated and that it tells more about what happened to the recently weds..
Anne Tyler does it again. It is not every author who can write almost 200 pages about a span of 3 days and keep a reader interested. Absolutely a lovely book about a woman/ex-wife/mother/teacher who is somewhat lacking in people skills. There is also a daughter who is getting married, an ex-husband who needs a place to stay for the wedding, and a cat that she doesn't want . The in-laws and the wedding guests were also genuinely amusing to read about. I LOVED THIS BOOK. It was relatable and just sucked me in as if a friend was telling me all about their weekend. Thank you to NetGalley and Knopf for the complimentary digital ARC. This review is my own thoughts and opinion.
