Oh, I really enjoyed Three Days In June. I loved the premise,
the characters (including the cat), and the ending was also executed perfectly. Believe it or not, this was my first time reading a book written by Anne Tyler. I can easily see why she is so popular. This was a heartwarming story that consumed me for two days. I felt that it was very well written. I definitely recommend this book to other readers.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced reading copy.
A well written book but I had a hard time agreeing with some of the choices made by the characters. Enjoyed that it was told over a short period of time but it felt very unrealstic
There’s something so captivating about Tyler’s writing and the way she invites you into a singular world with well-rounded, fully developed characters. I love when novels take place over a small period of time and this story told over three days worked so well. I was never bored and always wanting to learn more about these characters. My major reasoning for not making this five stars would veer into spoiler territory and was ultimately something I felt could have been accomplished with a different storyline. That aside, I’m happy to continue my venture into Tyler’s backlist.
Three Days in June was such a lovely book! It captured my heart and I can't wait to read more by this author. Thank you NetGalley and publisher for this advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review!
I think I would have enjoyed this one with more of a plotline. I usually do really enjoy character-driven novels, but this one was a little slow and some of the characters seemed to make poor choices. The ending was heartwarming and hopeful, but the wedding portion was depressing.
Another Anne Tyler classic. Outstanding writing with a ho-hum subject. The characters are pretty vanilla too, including the cat. Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.
As the title suggests, Three Days in June takes place over.. yep, you guessed it!- three days in June. Gail's daughter Debbie is about to get married and there is drama afoot. One of my favorite angles was Gail's interactions with her daughter, and also Max's interactions with Gail, in regards to her interactions with Debbie. I know that was wordy- what I mean is, it is challenging to respond to our grown children as adults, to stay in our own lane and allow them to make their own decisions, even if we don't necessarily agree with them. Tyler captured that well.
Anne Tyler is and has been a favorite author of mine for years. She lets things unspool gently, allows the mundane the space for examination and realizes that the small things are what make up a life in so many ways.
Thank you so much, NetGalley and Publisher, for the opportunity to read and review!
I really don’t know what I just read. I guess it was a woman discovering her life after pretty much losing everyone in it???? The main take away I got from this book is that you can cheat on your spouse and they’ll forgive you if they love you enough????? Idk maybe the message went totally above my head. I guess I thought there would be more about the mother daughter relationship.
Anne Tyler’s "Three Days in June" is a heartwarming and beautifully crafted novel that captivates readers with its sweet narrative and endearing characters. This was my first novel by Ann Tyler, from the very first page, it is evident that Tyler is a master storyteller, capable of turning the mundane details of everyday life into a fascinating and page turning story.
The story unfolds over the course of three days, and takes us on a journey through the lives of a main characters as they go through a wedding.. Each character is well developed, making them not only relatable but also likeable. One of the standout features of "Three Days in June" is Tyler’s fluid and engaging writing style. Her prose flows effortlessly, drawing readers in and keeping us hooked. Her ability to infuse depth and warmth into her storytelling makes this novel a joy to read.
I highly recommend "Three Days in June" to anyone who appreciates beautifully written stories with well-developed characters and a narrative that celebrates the intricacies of daily life.
Anne Tyler is the Mistress of Domestic Fiction. In this short novel we visit a family wedding as seen through the eyes of the Mother of the Bride who is told the day before the wedding that she has no people skills and will be replaced in her job. So the story plays out over the ensuing three days. There is an ex husband, a family secret, a former beau, an officious mother of the groom, a devastated bride and a foster cat. Tyler encapsulates life using the small details we tend to ignore, the clash of personalities in any family event and yet wraps it with humor.
This is the story of Gail and Max and the wedding of their only daughter, Debbie. The reader gets snippets of information about the wedding, the couples past, and their fears and regrets.
I can see how many will enjoy the faced paced, simple humor of the plot. For me it fell flat, and seemed a bit drawn out. I never got the sense of who any of the characters really were and it all seemed very jumbled. The premise is that Gail is socially awkward, yet her own daughter leaves her out of all major events before and during the wedding! While I have loved Anne Taylor books in the past, this was not my favorite.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This book is filled with ordinary people living ordinary lives and observations on how real people think and feel. Gail is divorced and it’s the weekend of her daughter’s wedding. Her ex husband is staying with her and he’s brought a cat. Secrets about her own marriage are revealed as the three day weekend unfolds. This is a very character driven story. If you want plot this is not it. If you love Ann Tyler, this will probably be a good fit for you.
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Gail is not having a good day. Her daughter is getting married and is hiding a secret. Secrets have a way of coming out in ways we never imagined. I did not like the characters in this book.
Taking place over three days in June, this is the story of Gail Baines, a sixtyish, divorced, socially awkward mother of the bride as she negotiates the day before, day of, and day after the wedding. Her ex, Max, shows up unexpectedly at her door with a foster cat, there is an unexpected crisis between the soon to be wed couple, and a family secret is revealed. On top of that, she may have lost her job and hasn’t been invited to her daughter’s spa day.
Anne Tyler is a master of poignant, astute and amusing observations of relationships and life. Full of interesting and well developed characters, this is a short novel; the writing flows so smoothly that it is easily read in one day. A true delight!
My first Anne Tyler book but not my last. Short and sweet. But so well written. Awkward and stubborn Gail’s daughter is getting married and her ex husband is coming to stay with her. And not only that but he’s bringing a cat. So real and so raw. Loved!
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC.
Anne Tyler always gives us a peek into the lives of ordinary people who often encounter unordinary circumstances.
Gail Baines' daughter Debbie is getting married, but when Debbie tells Gail and Max (Debbie's dad and Gail's ex-husband) something troubling about her fiancé, this stirs up a lot of history between Gail and Max. With a storyline of only 3 days, Gail and Max navigate through a lot of their past to come to an interesting conclusion.
While this is a thoughtful and interesting read, unfortunately, I would not say that this is one of my favorite Anne Tyler books.
Thank you to #Knopf and #NetGalley for this electronic ARC of #ThreeDaysinJune.
5 stars
Gail is a 60 something year old divorced mom of an adult daughter who's getting married. This story takes us through Gail’s perspective of the day before, day of, and day after her daughter’s wedding. But it turns into way more than just wedding events. We get a glimpse of Gails failed marriage with Max. And some self realization on how things could have been different.
I loved this story. Gail was relatable to me (being an introvert. ) and how hard it is for us to truly express how we are feeling, always feeling guilty about decisions we make, always trying to be perfect. This story turned out to be so much more than I expected going into it. The author did a wonderful job of making me feel I was right in Gails brain and making her so relatable. What a pleasurable read!
Anne Tyler has a remarkable ability to capture the quiet, everyday moments of life and reveal the poetry within them. The three days in this particular June are the day before, of and after the wedding of Debbie, Gail Banes' daughter.
Gail's well maintained life begins to unravel when she’s abruptly leaves her job after being told her current position is no longer needed and and the that she is "too socially awkward" for the promotion to which she applied. Upon returning to her small home in Baltimore, she finds her ex-husband Max with a foster cat in tow, needing a place to stay after their daughter refused him due to her fiancé's allergies. She finds herself recalling their times together, the comfort in knowing each other's likes and dislikes and the pain in hurt that familiarity can bring.
Soon after, her daughter Debbie confides a startling secret about her fiancé, stirring memories of Gail’s own failed marriage and resurfacing guilt, regret, and doubt. As the rehearsal dinner looms, Gail is left questioning both her daughter’s choices and her own.
Tyler masterfully guides us through Gail’s emotional journey as she reflects on her past, present, and future. With a deft touch and an economy of words, she crafts a story that is both profound and beautifully restrained. Truly, Tyler stands among the finest writers of our time.
My thanks to NetGalley and Knopf, Pantheon, Vintage, and Anchor for the Arc of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
Three Days in June
By Anne Tyler
A story set over three days, Three Days in June was a quick, compulsive read.
Gail is getting ready for her daughter's wedding. Her ex husband has shown up on her doorstep unexpectedly needing to stay with her. Her daughter has dropped a bomb on her parents and Gail has in return dropped a bomb on her daughter.
Gail is "not a people person". Truer words have never been written. I didn't particularly like Gail, but I was totally intrigued by the storyline to continue reading.
I enjoyed Three Days in June. It’s predominantly Gail’s story, though it centers around the wedding of her daughter Debbie. It begins the day before the wedding when Gail is having a bad day and ex-husband Max (as father of the bride) enters the story. Debbie finds out something this day that makes her question if she wants to get married or not. And Gail and Max have their own opinions and history.
There are so many things about Anne Tyler’s books that I love. The first are the characters who are so real that you have either encountered them or you recognize yourself in them.. Many of her characters are not necessarily lovable. But as we get to know them, we come to understand them better, and are rooting for them. It’s a simple story, but with insight, humor and beautiful writing.
I enjoyed reading this book and spending time with these characters. I always finish an Anne Tyler book reluctantly and hope it won’t too long until the next one.
