This was my first time reading a book where the FMC gets sucked into the book she reads, and it didn't disappoint. I loved the small crew and the found family aspect. Often, too many characters can be overwhelming, but the size of this main crew was just perfect.
The spice level was just right for me; if you follow me, you know I'm not a big fan of spice and prefer YA. But something about pirate books makes the spice intriguing! โ๏ธ๐ฅIn this one, it was perfectly timed and not overdone.
This lovely read reignited my love for pirate stories, and I've already added more pirate books to my TBR.
๐ฏ๐๐ ๐ป๐ ๐ณ๐๐๐ comes out on August 1stโbe sure to check it out! ๐๐ฆ
Huge thanks to the author and netgalley for the ARC. I loved every moment of this book! ๐โค๏ธ
Thank you netgalley for giving me ARC access to this book in exchange for an honest review.
I think this book has a lot of promise, and a fun and interesting premise. However, the execution really fell flat for me. I ended up DNFing this book at 30% because I was not enjoying reading it.
My main issues are: inconsistent narration with random intersections from a second person perspective breaking the fourth wall with overused quips, a real issue of just dumping information and exposition without any real reason for it in the story (for example, two mysterious side characters just sharing their entire backstory with the mc hours after meeting her with no prompting), and the pacing of the dialogues and action felt really choppy and confusing at times.
I think this book might be someone else's cup of tea but the stated issues along with lots of other little nitpicky things kept me from finishing it and I wouldn't recommend it.
given that this is a novella, i expected the world building to have less focusโฆbut for a book abt pirates, i definitely expected moreโฆpirates ๐ซฃ
things i liked:
โ strong fmc who likes to read
โ angsty mmc
โ banter
โ endearing side characters
โ intriguing plot elements
things i noticed:
โ inconsistent narrative. the first chapters kept getting interrupted by a disembodied minstrel type of narrator (think lady whistledown in tone) and this not only took me out of the story, but this narrative style did not match the tone of the storytelling within the writing itself so it felt jarring whenever this voice appeared. by about 30% the narrator had stopped butting in completely and didnโt make another appearance until maybe 85%.
โ contemporary tone. this a historical โfantasyโ set in the 18th-19th century but reads with a very modernized tone. ex: stockholm syndrome is mentioned in the story but this concept had not been given a name until the late 20th century. other references like this are made throughout so i think further editing would have greatly benefited this story.
โ the โfantasyโ elements. the entire premise of this story is that the fmc gets transported into a favorite book featuring pirates. this magic is not explained and is very quickly brushed over when she finally reveals her origins. iโd say this leans more into magical realism but even then, more explanation or more believable dialogue between characters would have delivered this element with more punch.
โ repetitive phrases. one particular alliteration was used perhaps eight times.
the middle portion definitely held my attention and i will always support an angsty yearning mmc so giving some redeeming points for the existence of flynn โจ
thanks so much to netgalley and victory editing for a digital arc in exchange for my honest thoughts.
I was really excited to read this because I love a good pirate romance and this did not disappoint. I loved all of the characters, although I did hope for more character development and depth throughout the book. I loved the chemistry of the main characters but a part of me just craved some more witty banter.
I adored the world, the adventures and the idea of going into my favorite book. At times I thought the plot was lacking, as if it was just missing a little something. The authors writing was great and I enjoyed the book a lot though. It was a fast fun read that I would recommend again.
Thank you to NetGalley, Elena H. Covens, and Victory Editing for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
โEmily Underwood has spent her life avoiding suitors while seeking adventure between the pages of books. But when a lightning storm sends her into her favourite book, can she find a way to survive this exciting new world and the dangerous pirate within it?โ
When I saw this book on NetGalley, I definitely knew I wanted to request it. I looked like such a cute, fun readโฆand it was! I loved the idea of being transported into my favorite book, especially one with the adventure and love of a pirate romance.
I loved the characters, especially the side ones. It was fun to learn about how they became pirates and what made them join up with Flynn. Being able to view both Flynn and Emilyโs thoughts about each other, and how they changed over the course of the book was so much fun.
There were a few flaws and overall I felt like I wanted more character development from our main characters. This book definitely has so much potential and I did enjoy reading it!
Thank you to NetGalley, Elena H. Covens, and Victory Editing for and ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This, my friends, is probably what we romantasy girlies wish forโto be given a chance to enter our favorite book/s and to meet the main character and have a HEA with them. Come on, who doesnโt? ๐ If youโre looking for a book with that plot, then this oneโs surely for you!
I enjoyed reading the book that I didnโt realize I was already at the last page. It was an easy read; the tone reminiscent of how My Lady Jane was also written. It hooked me, making me expect a really exciting journey ahead. And indeed, I wasnโt disappointed. But alas, this book fell a bit short for me when it comes to the plot itself. Or maybe Iโm just looking for something more interesting that will set this book apart from all pirate romances book. The chemistry between the characters is amazing, wonโt deny. But Iโm still left begging for more. Itโs all so typical, that nothing really sets it apart from other books.
Despite those shortcomings, the author is still a very talented writer. The atmosphere isnโt boring, and she was able to bring to life such amazing and relatable characters. Please do take time to give this book a chance! I may not be its target audience, maybe thatโs why Iโm 50/50 about this book, but Iโm sure there are others who will surely love this.
Thank you NetGalley and Victory Editing for the ARC!
โHe loved her dangerously, viciously, and beautifully.โ
Oh this was just too much fun. Such an enjoyable, lighthearted, quick read โ I loved every page, and was truly swept up into this fast paced adventure full of loveable characters (loveable enough Iโm actually planning to read the spinoffs ?!), men who are absolute simps, happy endings and a bit of spice. For my girlies who need a break from angst!! And this is a bold claim, but I truly believe that this Flynn lived up to the Flynn name โ he gave off enough Flynn Rider vibes to really hit the spot. And that is a high, high compliment.
โWhat kind of pirate would I be if I let somebody steal what is mine?โ
Our fmc was a cutie patootie indeed โ ready to do what she had to to protect her family, but dreaming of adventure and escapes from 1800s London. I thought she was such a bright, easy to enjoy protagonist, and humorous too. Her banter with our mmc was just too cute โ they had such a fun vibe going with so much chemistry, they constantly made me giggle.
โYou are mine, Princess. Mine to heal, mine to serve, mine to protect, and above all else, mine to love. Whatever you ask, it will never be too much.โ
Our mmc was the perfect book boyfriend for an easy read like this one โ protective, funny, trying-to-overthrow-the-monarchy-and-save-the-peoples-Robin-Hood-style, plus a massive simp! We always love a dark haired pirate whoโs fully obsessed and devoted to our fmc without any drama. The dream!
โShe was his own constellation. She was his way home. She was home. Perhaps it was him that had fallen prey to her. Because whether she knew it or not, she was his to protect, but he belonged to her entirely.โ
Overall, this was just pure pleasure and fun. I truly had the time of my life, and I need more of these low-stress romantic adventures!! Thank you so much to the author and NetGalley for the ARC copy!
This is such a wonderful story about adventure, love and a little bit of magic.
I felt like I was reading a fairytale from my childhood with adult themes.
Emily gets sucked into her favourite book in a magical storm and finds the main character Flynn who is a morally grey pirate that has a gooey centre for the people he cares about.
Long lost family, battles, spicy scenes, adventure and heartbreak all come into this.
This was a delightful quick read.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you to NetGalley, Elena Covens and Victory Editing for this ARC.
His To Love is book 1 in the Second Chance Books series.
Emily Underwood's mother wants her to get married soon but she doesn't want to, she'd like to stay buried in the books in the library where no one else visits. One day, as she's reading her favourite book that her father seems to have left her, she is pulled inside the world of Flynn Sawyer, the famous pirate.
Firstly, I had to request the book as I loved the cover. The story had me hooked and I enjoyed the narration too. Although in the middle part of the book, I felt there wasn't much happening in terms of the story developing or more world building.

His to Love is every reader girl's dream come true! To fall into your favorite book and the main character fall head over heels for you? Sign me up. This was a cute, quick read with some unexpected spiciness! I very much saw Flynn as Orlando Bloom from Pirates of the Caribbean - the Flying Dutchman captain version (bandana and all) - iykyk. Some parts of it felt very Outlander-esque and I am totally here for it. There were some small grammatical errors which is to be expected with an ARC copy but I really enjoyed it and would definitely love to pick up the next book in the series!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC!
This review will also be posted on Goodreads. They will be posted July 24, 2024.
I ADORED this book. The reason I originally wanted to review His To Love is because, I believe, it's every girl's dream to get stuck in a book and LOVE the main character!! This book had cozy fall vibes but for the summer.
Our cutie fmc was so easy to like. I appreciated how much she was willing to sacrifice for her family while also having dreams for so much more. She was witty, kind, strong, everything you'd aspire to be if you too fell into a book! Her mmc companion was also to die for. I absolutely love a man who is kind of terrifying but soft when he needs to be. He just absolutely melted for her and I loved that so much.
Something else that I really appreciated about this book was how easy it was to enjoy. There wasn't really any point in the book where I was stressed out or trying to anticipate what happened next. It was just honestly enjoyable and I loved that so much.
Many thanks to Elena and NetGalley for allowing me to review!
My first pirate romance and I loved it ๐ดโโ ๏ธ๐
Emily Underwood has spent her life avoiding suitors while seeking adventure in her books. But when a lightning storm sends her into her favorite book, can she find a way to survive this exciting new world and its dangerous, yet oh-so-handsome pirate?
Oh, it was so cute and I loved how the story was told. It had a very adventurous feel, but it wasnโt over the top. Flynn, the dashing pirate, is both charming and infuriating, making for some hilarious and swoon-worthy moments.
Who wouldn't want to travel into their favorite book? Imagine dodging danger and stealing kisses from a pirate captain!
It's a quick read and hard to put down once you start. The banter between Emily and Flynn kept me laughing, and the romantic tension was spot on.
Highly recommended! Get ready for a good time and a pirate adventure you won't forget!
Thanks to Netgalley for this ARC
Emily is from 1800s London, she is about to be forced into a marriage to protect her families home after her father was lost at sea.
All she has left of her father is a swashbuckling storybook about pirates and adventure. Miraculously she is sucked into this story where she meets the books handsome protagonist.
While the premise of this story was intriguing it was not executed particularly well. There is very little world building of the storybook world, and everything that happens is exceptionally convenient. It's really suffers from telling instead of showing. Every twist is somewhat predictable and even the spice scenes are pretty bland. The potential was there the execution however was not.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
"His To Love" by Elena H. Covens was just not for me. I thought it was going to be a light, swashbuckling fantasy with a dash of romance like Pirates of the Caribbean...it was not. The premise of the story is engaging (young woman gets magically transported into her favorite pirate tale) but the execution was lackluster. Also, the writing itself seemed so unpolished that I'm not sure it had a full edit; hopefully, that changes prior to its publication.
Thank you to Victory Editing Net Galley Co-Op and Net Galley for the eARC. All opinions are my own.
This was such a cozy pirate romance, filled with adventure and adorable moments. It's a fast-paced story set in the 1800s, written in the style of a historical romance. With a witty narrator and an engaging plot, I became completely obsessed with it. Reading it felt like the movies I loved when I was younger, like The Goonies, Stardust, and The NeverEnding Story.
Who wouldnโt want to end up in their favourite book and fall for the 6'5 pirate MMC?
Expect: the one bed trope, touch her and die, a cinnamon roll MMC, found family, and some spice. Can't wait to read the next book in the series!
A fun and spicy adventure novel! When Emily Underwood is magically pulled into the pages of her favorite book, she finds herself suddenly face-to-face with the dashing yet aggravating Flynn Sawyer. Kidnapped by Flynn and his crew, Emily comes to realize this is not all a dream, but rather she's now in the middle of a dangerous new world with no obvious way to return home.
At times the writing did feel a bit stilted, but overall I enjoyed the characters, loved the story's premise, and thought the pacing was great! Additionally the narrator choice was interesting and I think it worked well, giving a bit more mystery and charm to the tale. In the end I almost do wish it had been a bit longer, just to give some more time to exploring the world and building up to the final battle. Nevertheless, this was an enjoyable read and I'm happy to see that a sequel is already on the horizon.
Thank you to Elena H. Covens and NetGalley for the digital ARC in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.
What a sweet read. It started off slow, like any fantasy books but when it started off to go it really went good! I could not put it down when i went past the slow start. I love the angst, the pining. God even the sexy scenes made the wait worth it. For a tine period book, it sure is hot, but i wish it had more ๐ฅ๐ฅ.
I love it. The understanding, the twists. But most of all, i think i loved the idea of a reader finding love with her story books and keeping it in end, way better. I think i am excited for the next book pls give us more spice i think it is MM next.
2.5 stars
A woman who transports into the plot of her favorite book where she meets a 6'5 grumpy pirate? Sign me up. Yet there was nothing "fantasy"-esque about this. Once she's in the world, it's just back and forth between their thoughts, which revolve around one thing: each other.
I was hoping this would be better. It wasn't necessarily bad, just a lot of missed potential and opportunities. I also picked it up because it showed a low page count and yet a book under 300 pgs has never felt so long before?
I'd hoped there would be more of an insight of Flynn's pirate world, which there was not. It read like a severely underdeveloped wattpad story. There were so many reused words and strange sentence structure, etc, that it took me out of the story when I wanted to get lost in it. How many times can you write "his hardness pressed against his pants"? A dozen, apparently. The narrator butts in a lot which I'm not used to in a story and I'm coming to realize I don't like. This all just means there's so much room for improvement! However, I was hoping to read something that was polished, not the WIP draft, which is what this felt like.
thank you netgalley for the arc!
I really wanted to like this book but I just couldn't get into it. The writing style just wasn't working for me, it felt a but fanfiction-y to me.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC.
I really liked the premise of the story. It was fun, adventurous and easy to read. It could have been longer however and I think it needs a bit of polishing. Even though it had some flaws I enjoyed reading this book.
If you're looking for a fun, easy read with some spicy scenes then this is for you.
