A fox, a crow, and a mouse are looking for food in winter. They hear a squirrel talking about its secret stash of nuts, but the squirrel is not willing to share. The squirrel finds its stash empty and must ask the animals it denied food for help.
I cannot express enough how beautiful this book is. It’s illustrated with muted tones that convey both winter quiet and the liveliness of an umber fox. The trees are drawn as pointed and infinitely branching, becoming both a background and a character in some panels. The story is so simple that the art has to sing and it does.
Lovely book to read in winter by a warm fire. The message of friendship and helping each other is great and the simple story makes for an easy read aloud.
An adorable book that focuses on the importance of helping others and sharing. A great, little story for younger kids with beautiful illustrations. The text was engaging enough to keep the attention of younger minds and really focused in of its meaning. A wonderful, well-rounded story.
Thank you Netgalley and Charlesbridge for this ARC of In the Winter Woods.
I love the illustrations and message of this book - sharing and helping others. Anything with animals is especially loved by my son. The message seemed a little more obvious / nail on the head than some other children's books so I would recommend for kids aged 2-4. Overall, very cute story about compassion and community.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. Four animals are so hungry in the winter months. Can they work together to find something to eat? Gorgeous book, with a positive message, and lovely illustrations.
A super cute story that my 8 year old daughter loved! She and I read it together but she could have easily read this herself. It’s short and simple and ended with a good lesson in sharing and friendship.
Great book about a stubborn squirrel that won’t share … until he can’t find his stash! He then asks some hungry animals if they will help him locate his food and he will then share with them.
Illustrations were beautiful.
A gorgeous children's book with stunning illustrations and a story about how several hungry creatures in winter benefit from a squirrel who shares his food. Loved it!
All the woodland creatures must help to find squirrel’s stash of food for the winter so they don’t go hungry, but will they find it? Will squirrel even share if they do? Cute translation with a bright message of working together!
Everyone is SO very hungry but winter is not willing to share. Squirrel knows he has a lovely stash but no matter where he looks, he can't find it. But there is an answer to the problem!
The illustrations by the author are clear, colorful, and fun! Thanks to Elizabeth Lauffer for translating from the German.
Well suited for reading alone or WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or your public library!
I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from Charlesbridge via NetGalley. Thank you!

This is a cute book about the importance of sharing and helping. The illustrations are nice. I wasn't wow-ed and my daughter wasn't super held by the story or pictures, but overall a nice kids book.
Thank you Netgalley and Charlesbridge for this ARC of In the Winter Woods by Daniela Kulot! This is a well-written and beautifully illustrated story about four forest creatures learning to work together and share what they can to survive the winter.
I love that this story shows true examples of how sharing can be difficult with others and sometimes we make mistakes in how we treat our friends. But as friends, we must make up for those mistakes. I love the animals exploring together and the cute little phrases each of them says about how hungry they are at the beginning of the story. It gave the characters personality and made you feel connected to these sweet forest creatures.
I am very excited to share this story with my students during library time, especially this fall when we talk about animals getting ready for hibernation! This is a perfect story to share with students in the classroom because it has several helpful topics you can discuss. Examples: friendship, sharing, hibernation, being helpful, learning about personality traits, caring for others, and so much more!
I seriously adore these illustrations in the book and hope to see more from this author! My favorite quote from the story was, "But it's winter, and winter is not willing to share."

This is a nice story about helping friends and sharing. The illustrations are beautiful and it has a great message for young children.
This book is darling and sends a good message for children to learn to share with others. Honestly, my favorite thing about this book was the illustrations. The mouse was so cute!
All the animals are hungry in the middle of the winter when food is hard to find. Although squirrel is hesitant to share, when he can't find his stash he agrees to share his food. Cute little simple story with beautiful illustrations.
In the Winter Woods is a super cute children's picture book that features a cast of animals trying to survive the winter whilst hungry. The illustrations were absolutely gorgeous & I loved the personality that each animal was given. The text was short & engaging and focused on a message of sharing. I did feel like the squirrel only agreed to share because he wanted help & would have loved to see a little more personal growth there, but still a great message overall.
This is definitely one to pick up for the youngsters! Thanks to Daniela Kulot, Charlesbridge, and NetGalley for the chance to read and review! My thoughts and opinions are my own.
In the Winter Woods, by Daniela Kulot is a beautifully illustrated book about learning to work together. It's sweet simple wording is perfect for young kids. I read this to my four year old Grandson, and he loved the pictures and the story.
Top notch drawings; the character designs, especially the faces and expressions are not in a style I would normally pick, yet glad this was so, because they are so fresh. The backgrounds and settings are 5/5. Beautiful, festive (home-like but for the animals), cute.
The story has immense potential, and it functions like a modern fairy tale. I believe with a few touches it can instantly become a classic like The Gruffalo.
The themes of sharing, change, forgiveness, solidarity and learning are important.
In my opinion, if the story had a few more beats (2-3), the tension increased more, and the character who learns to be better/share, learned this lesson in higher stakes, it can indeed become a sensation.
Nevertheless, it is still a great book and I highly recommend it.
In all my years of teaching Kindergarten, sharing has always been one of the hardest concepts to teach. In some instances it comes easy, in others not so much. 𝗜𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗪𝗢𝗢𝗗𝗦 is a lovely story set in a beautiful winter wonderland that goes a long way in demonstrating this very important concept. With its lovely illustrations and simple phrases, it is a book that young readers will enjoy. A lovely addition to any personal or classroom library.
What an awesome story about teamwork and forgiveness. When Squirrel realized that he needed help to find his stash but he had already refused to share with the other animals, he needed forgiveness. Luckily, the others were willing to forgive and assist him in finding his stash. Also, I completely agree about Winter. It’s not willing to share. 🥹
A common tale set in the winter. Woodland creatures working together to fend off hunger. Common trope for kids, but the story lacked the oomph or uniqueness that other titles of this variety carry.
