This short book is a part of a series on various typefaces, and I have not read any others in the series. This volume seemed a bit superficial, but I think it may be because it's part of a series. I wanted a bit more opinion, more than just a quick report on a couple who hated the font.
tldr: society hates whimsy
this was a really interesting deep dive into the font when it actually focused on the history of the font, all the outrage that came from it, and some scientific studies surrounding it, however we lost the plot far too many times and delved into completely unrelated fonts. This would've done so much better as a chapter in a whole book about fonts, leaving the author less room to stray but still time to discuss all the fonts and how they all influenced each other
In just a little over 100 pages, readers learn about one of the most contentious typefaces to ever exist: Comic Sans. Those who shudder are its mere mention will either laugh or cry when they discover that Comic Sans was the typeface of choice to announce a scientific breakthrough. More radical readers might agree with an outright banning of the typeface, as suggested by one type enthusiast couple. Garfield is himself a fan—or at least, is able to appreciate it for its complexity. 'Comic Sans' the book shines most not only when Garfield discusses how this particular typeface came to be, but also when he relates it to other issues in type design. I especially enjoyed the follow-up with Comic Sans' designer, Vincent Connare, as well as a dedicated section to a young(er) designer and educator, Lynne Yun. My only critique is that there is only one chapter really dedicated to the advantages of Comic Sans, where the benefits for individuals with dyslexia seem like a mere mention. Although as a someone who remains lukewarm on the typeface itself, perhaps that's the point.
As a fan of _Just My Type_, I was thrilled to see this series of books. I really enjoyed this one. I learned so much about Comic Sans in this short but informative and entertaining book. I can't wait to read the other two books in this series. I am hoping that there will be more than just these three as I love the idea behind these books and would love to have short books like this on more fonts. Highly recommended!
