In light of recent events and solidarity with the Indigenous voices, I will not be reading or reviewing this work at this time because of the harm caused by the author. I would like to thank the publisher for this opportunity.
I planned to give feedback, but I am disappointed in the recent news about the author. I do not want to mess up my feedback ratio, so I will be submitting my original star rating, which was 3.5 rounded up to 4.
As this book has been pulled from publication due to the author’s actions, I will not be reviewing.
Thanks to Macmillan/SMP for the opportunity to review the arc.
Due to the author's recent controversy I will not be reviewing this book. She has pulled it from publishing.
Shame she had to lie about being native… it was a decent book but obviously the book world is up in arms
Due to the author’s recent controversy, I will not be reviewing this book. I am very disappointed to read she appears to have lied about her identity.
This book was pulled from publication by the author, so I am filling out this review for completion's sake. The star rating is unrelated to any thoughts or feelings on the situation surrounding it, or its contents. For what it's worth, I enjoyed what I had read so far, which wasn't much, but I can't comment on any authenticity it may or may not have.
This book was very okay. Until I learned the truth about Colbys connection to the Cherokee tribe, McMillans lack of due diligence and Colbys haughty attitude when held accountable. The story was 3 stars, very flat, but mildly entertaining. The characters could have been more dimensional.
Due to the author’s recent controversy, I will not be reviewing this book. I am very disappointed to read she appears to have lied about her identity and hurt the author and romance community in this deceitful way.
Due to recent events, this title is no longer being published so I will not be reviewing at this time.
I'm uninterested in reading a book by an author who said they are POC but aren't. This sounded promising but authors have to know that the things they say have meaning and that folks want authentic rep
Not for Me. I typically love Sapphic romance but this one is not it. I can't recommend this book. There are better Sapphic romances out there that I would recommend before this one.
This author always somewhat unsettled me, but I trusted that due diligence had been done to make sure Native authors were benefitting from Native stories. I shouldn't have. I do not support white authors profiting off of faked Native heritage, and I will no longer be supporting Colby Wilkens. DNF'd after the news broke.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the eARC, and for pulling this book from publication. Thank you to TAAF for uncovering the truth.
Wanted to love it. Just didn't love it. Wanted to root for the FFM's to find their way to each, but really just couldn't. Sort of found myself wondering, "Maybe you both would be better with other people?" which is not where one wants to go.
Only reviewing this because I worked hard for my feedback ratio. I don’t support authors who profit off of marginalized communities and especially ones who lie about being part of that community. I’m glad this book has been pulled
I have heard about the scandal recently about this author, however, I am going to review this book with just the book in mind. Separating art from the creator if you will.
I enjoyed this one. It has adventure, an interesting and unique plot, plus a sweet friends to lovers romance. I thought the plot was well developed and paced. It kept me guessing and excited for the whole book. The romance is friends to lovers which is one of my favorite tropes. I think the author did a good job of not only showing the friendship but the budding romance as well. The reader can feel the tension/energy between them and that adds some mutual pining to the story.
I found the cultural aspect to be interesting and important.
A good Indiana Jones retelling that kept me entertained.
Author falsely claimed to be Native. The writing wasn't very good either. Publish books by actual Native authors.
This premise is interesting, but I have chosen to abandon after hearing that the author falsely claimed to be Native American and was debunked. I cannot support an author like that.
Well, this wasn’t it. I really wanted to love this, but in the end it didn’t delivered on any fronts.
The book suffered from the fact there’s no other characters besides the two protagonists, and so it quickly became stagnant. Every conversation was repeated over and over again, they had no other outlets to their problems.
I understand and sympathise with Isi’s feelings, but your entire support system can’t be a single person, you can’t resent her for living her life, that’s just toxic in both a friendship and a romantic relationship.
Also, how stunning Louise’s boobs are, is mentioned at least a hundred times, often in moments where you don’t really want to be taken out by what’s happening story wise.
It had a great potential, but didn’t follow through.
This was a fine read and had a cool premise upon requesting it. The premise fell a little flat for me as the author potentially shouldn't be telling indigenous stories?
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc for an honest review.
Did we not read Yellowface?
