This is a solid book about John Elway and his 16-year career with the Denver Broncos from 1983-1998. This period would be the highlight years for any Denver Broncos fan as it represents 5 Super Bowl appearances and 2 Super Bowl wins back-to-back during the 1997 and 1998 seasons, the last two years of Elway’s career.
Most of the book is reminiscences from coaches and players about Elway’s years as the starting quarterback with lots of game detail on the most important playoff games and the Super Bowls, especially the last two winning ones.
Most people know John Elways won back-to-back Super Bowls but it is easy to forget he was actually in five because they got blown out three times in his pervious Super Bowl appearances. But these runs to the Super Bowl featured some of the most dramatic AFC Championship games in NFL history, at the expense of the poor Cleveland Browns.
This book does a great job of reliving those moments, like the 98 yard THE DRIVE from the 3-yard line with 37 seconds left in the game to tie the1986 AFC Championship game and then to go on and win it in overtime against the Browns.
And then the very next year they beat the Browns again and that game is called THE FUMBLE because Ernest Byner of Cleveland fumbled the ball at the two-yard line with a little over a minute left, depriving Cleveland of the chance to take the lead with little time remaining. Poor Cleveland fans.
I also like the details about Elways poor relationship with his initial head coach Dan Reeves but this close relationship to Mike Shannahan, the coach during the two Super Bowl wins. His special relationship with Gary Kubiak, this backup quarterback and eventually his QB coach and offensive coordinator including during the two Super Bowl wins.
This is a very solid book and a must read for Denver Broncos fans and book most NFL fans will enjoy as well.
Mike Klis is a great sportswriter that has always written an accessible style. The Denver Broncos mini-dynasty at the end of the nineties is really underdiscussed as a significant sports team, and it was great to get insight into those years
Diehard Broncos fan and longtime Denver resident, how could I resist a book with Elway on the cover? It was a joy to watch him play all those years, though not always, but especially the back to back Superbowl victories. That team elevated the city more than a mile high. What a pleasure to relive that time in these pages.
