Thank you, NetGalley and Titan books, for the chance to read this book in exchange of an honest review.
Miles Warren hails from a long line of psychics, he's an empath and he's resigned to follow the family footsteps, in the family business. Apart from lying about being gay, he has everything under control. When he starts having visions about a dying boy, his world is turned upside down, mostly when he learns he's Gabriel Hathworne, whose family has a century feud with his own. But that doesn't mean he is willing to let this boy die, so they start an uneasy alliance, trying to understand what will happen and how to stop Gabriel from dying. This means also uncover some truths, lies and secrets about their own families and what to do to save Gabriel.
Too bad Miles is starting to enjoy the time spent with who should have been a sworn enemy...
I really loved reading The Hollow and the haunted! It's funny, intriguing and well written, able to catching my attention right away. Miles is a fantastic main character, resigned to a life following his family footsteps, I loved his relationship with his cousin Charlee and how they support each other always. Also I loved the building relationship between Miles and Gabriel and, even though it was a bit expected, I loved the romance and the tension between them and I can't wait to read more about this story. It was so intriguing reading about their powers and histories between the two families and what started the feud. I can't wait to know more.
One negative note? The ending! How could you end in that moment???
This was a really impressive debut! At first I thought it wasn’t going to be the book for me because it started slow, Gabriel was a bit insufferable, and the setting was in high school which I don’t normally enjoy these days. I think that just may be because I’ve aged out of teenage books, which is obviously not the author’s fault. But then I hit the 25-30% mark and the plot dragged me in. The mystery was so cool, the world building and magic system were both great, and the characters grew on me. Raines managed to make even the smallest side character feel real and important, and that really added to the story. The build up to the romance was incredible, and the cliffhanger was both compelling and cruel. I would recommend this book to anyone, and I will be keeping an eye out so I can grab the sequel as soon as it drops.
This was a fun and well paced read that, if maybe it suffers slightly in comparison to Cemetery Boys, will still scratch part of that itch. I somehow missed that it was not a standalone, so while the characters developed less than I wanted and I found the pacing at the end a little frustrating, I have hope that the second book will give me more of what I wanted from this one!
The Hollow and the Haunted is such an amazing book. Such a fabulous read! Loved every part of the plot. I rated it 5 stars because I couldn't put it down.
I loved this book. The characters are interesting and kept me engaged. The narrator has such a strong and unique voice that I loved reading the story through their words. Miles is a great protagonist and main character, I loved learning about him and the adventure he is going on during this story. Rivals to lovers, forbidden romance, grump and sunshine characters and so many other romance tropes between the main characters kept me rooting for them throughout the story and mixing that with the mystery, fantasy, and paranormal aspects of the world and plot Raines created a great book that is enjoyable and I highly recommend it.
I haven’t read many spooky fantasy if at all but maybe I should. But I’m afraid that The Hollow and the Haunted did raise the bar of my expectations so high that it will be a long time before I find something that can even compare to its level. I cannot express enough how riveting this book is. I was planning to read a chapter or two just to get a feel for the story and I ended up simply consuming it without even realizing what was happening. This is an incredible debut by Camilla Raines. Please do yourself a favor and get a copy on release day!
WOW...
I cannot remember the last time I flew through a book in one sitting the way I did with The Hallow and the Haunted. The characters, the slow burn romance, the magical worldbuilding, and the beautiful atmosphere created by Raines' beautiful writing delivered a story that I can't get out of my head. Miles and Gabriel immediately became near and dear characters to me, and I NEED the sequel ASAP!
If you love The Raven Cycle, cozy magical worldbuilding, and a slow burn that delivers, PLEASEEEEE puck up The Hallow and the Haunted!
I don't remember the last time I fell in love so quickly with a character like I did with Miles Warren, harboring all the complexities and nuances of a queer teenager, he also tapped into the strangeness one feels when granted a spiritual gift. Combining romance and using genre without falling into clichés this title has all the elements needed to be a hit. I can't wait to tell everyone how much I adored it.
Charming and ghostly paranormal adventure with just the right amount of teen angst and romance.
Miles and Gabriel's families have been add odds for years in the paranormal community. Gabriel's rich family uses their abilities as a privilege to be sold to the highest bidder, where as Miles and his family aid any who needs it and let's them pay in any way they can.
When Miles sees a deathly vision about Gabriel they are reluctantly dragged together to change the future.
While the supernatural elements drive the central plot of this story Raines ability to combine that with the everyday stuggles of being a teenager flawlessly. Miles may be part of a family who exorcises spirts, but he struggles with his own anxiety, panic attacks, how to come out to his family and coming to terms with his future prospects not being his own but tied to the "family business".
This would appeal to fans of
- forbidden love
- slow burn
- grumpy X sunshine
- dark academic
If I could draw one negative from this is that's one evil cliffhanger to leave us on!!!
My Book Thoughts :)
- This isn't my usual read, but the synopsis got me and I was intrigued by the promise of psychic powers!
- The main character Miles is an all rounder. Fun, sensitive and hilarious at times.
- The whole story kinda reminded me of "The Chilling adventures of Sabrina" on Netflix. The whole school by day / working the magical power job by night aspect.
- I really loved the side characters too! The fierce cousin and kitchen witch lovable mum.
- I feel like there is abit of everything in this story for everyone - Rival family trope, cosy mystery, fantasy, slow burner romance, spooky vibes and some really lovely heartfelt moments.
- I loved the way Miles empathy was betrayed as his gift. It really warmed my heart.
- The ending leaves us on such a cliffhanger and I neeeeeeeed Book 2 asap.
- This is going to be the perfect autumnal cosy read for everyone this year!
As always thank you so much to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me read this before publication.
Elite angst. Laugh out loud humor. Heart-pounding cliffhangers. I went into this book not knowing much more than that it's compared to The Raven Cycle, which I can now say is completely accurate. The romance is very reminiscent of Carry On by Rainbow Rowell, which... If you know anything about me, you know I'm forever craving. I appreciate the focus on family as well, as I'm always a sucker for family dynamics--the more twisted the better. That final cliffhanger was criminal, but it worked, because I can't wait to see what happens in book two!
I enjoyed this book book so much. It isn't something I normally read, but rival families and phyic powers' entire premise was hard to pass up. I am so glad I took a chance on this bool.
Miles the main character is such a sweet boy with so much put on his shoulders at such a young age. Having to work the family business and go to school. Then he get a vision and he rushes into saving the son of a Rival snooty family, Gabrial. Their entire reluctant detectives to tentative friends is just awesome.
The entire feel of the book was intensely spooky with a lot of funny and tender moments. The supporting characters were fantastic and felt real. They had a place in the story and didn't feel like they were placed there just to move the plot along. I can't wait for this to come out so I can read it again as I wait for book two!
This was everything I hoped for and more! Realistic characters and relationships in a supernatural quandary! I loved it, adored it! Thank you so much!
I really enjoyed this one, the two main characters were interesting and entertaining. I loved the mystery around there families, but was disappointed we didn't get more information about them by the end of the book. I am assuming there will be a sequel where there will be some answers. All in all it was an enjoyable read.
This was a great read! The blurb stated it was perfect for lovers of atmospheric fantasies and it definitely delivered on that. I felt immersed into the world, which was a little creepy but great. I loved the ghosts in the cemetery and Miles was a fantastically written character.
I really enjoyed this! It is delightfully creepy and the mystery was fascinating. Miles was a great protagonist, he was a very well-rounded character — everything from his worries to his relationship with his mother felt super realistic. I also like that the romantic relationship developed slowly and it wasn't forced. The side characters were also really interesting and I would love to learn more about them. I thought this was a standalone, but after reading that ending, there NEEDS to be a sequel!
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
