This was a fantastic read for people wishing to make smaller changes in your lives. The Sleep Doctor shares how and why we need to change our sleeping patterns, our hydration habits, and our breathing strategies. It's easy to read, and he even gives a doable plan at the end. I will be buying a hard copy to reference and keep on my shelf!
There are few things that Americans take for granted more than sleep, water, and breathing. I know this to be true for myself and have been working hard this year to improve on each. I was very happy to find that Michael Breus, PhD (aka The Sleep Doctor) had written a book discussing those very things. In a very clear and easy style, Breus breaks down the science of what proper sleep, hydration and breathing can do for the body, and what the lack of those things has meant for the state of American health. After thoroughly, but concisely (no big words or confusing scientific terms here) explaining what it mean to sleep drink and breathe, Breus gives an easy to follow three week plan that one can use as the foundation of regaining their health. The best part? There is no special equipment required, no difficult techniques. Its just you and your willingness to spend time giving your body the basics of what it needs. In fact, it's so easy, a baby could (and naturally does) do it.
I recommend this book for anyone who is looking to dip their toe into creating a sustainable health journey. Aptly timed, anyone embarking on a health related New Year's resolution will find the goals of Sleep Drink Breathe ones that they will still be doing come July.
By focusing on three pillars--sleep, hydration and breathing--the author provides a three-week plan to boost health and wellness. The simplicity of the program appeals to me, and I am eager to try it to see how I might feel better and be more energized. Recommended!
Psychologist Breus writes that getting enough sleep has been found to strengthen the immune system and reduce cravings. He tells readers to keep a consistent sleep schedule and turn off screens at least an hour before bed. Staying hydrated is crucial to ensuring blood is viscous. He explains his formula for calculating how much water a person should drink: “(Weight in pounds x 0.6) + 12 oz. per 30 minutes of exercise = Daily intake in ounces.” He tells readers to breathe through their nose, contending that the nasal passageways create a “wind tunnel effect” that leads to “an increase of up to 20 percent in oxygen intake” compared to mouth breathing. There are some useful tips, as when Breus explains that coffee should be consumed with lunch instead of breakfast because its wakeful effects come from clearing the “drowsiness chemical adenosine from brain receptors,” which have usually already been cleared out before one wakes up. Unfortunately, other suggestions are painfully obvious While I think his book gives some valuable information, it is a mixed bag for me.
A basic primer on how to improve health by observing three areas of healthy behaviors. I was impressed by this book in that it simplifies how to improve your health by learning new habits and observing personal behaviors that sabotage feeling well. There are a lot of people talking about hydration and sleep, but there are fewer people talking about how to improve your breathing. So many of us have poor breathing behaviors, and this leads to excessive anxiety, poor sleep, and susceptibility to further problems as we age. The Sleep Doctor gives understandable explanations about how these three things interact to improve feeling better on a daily basis, but even better, he provides a roadmap on how to introduce improvements into your life. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a simple text on how to improve the basic behaviors that underscore health for all of us at any age. My sincere thanks to the author and Little, Brown and Company for an ARC of this book.
Sleep Drink Breathe is great as a reference book. I like that most of the recommendations can be completed without having to spend money. You just have to build on the foundation of things you are already doing to help improve your health in simple ways. I think this book is best used one section at a time, implementing and then moving on to the next section. For the purpose of providing a review, I did read it all the way through but I think doing one at a time would work better for the process of building new habits and giving yourself some time to focus on each improvement. Some of it was repetitive but other that I liked it. The workbook was helpful as well. Thank you @NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book.
Why could I have. not read this. sooner! I have been so overwhelmed with the massive amount of information available on healthy living. I have read so much conflicting advice; I was looking to get back to the basics. Dr. Michael Breus, author of Sleep Drink Breathe. takes the reader on a journey of mastering the essential components of healthy living. He provides a guideline to master these three components of life in a easy to read and actionable manner. I love that he provides the key takeaways at the end of the chapters. I also love the three week plan he provides to master each component. I look forward to completing the program and incorporating his advice into my daily habits.

This was a really approachable and insightful read. I think this concept can sometimes be overcomplicated and inundated with scientific terminology that is either not explained at all or really not explained well. So, all that to say this is a very well-written and well-explained book. I highly recommend it, especially for those around my age who are just starting to see the effects of "early aging" !!!!
Thank you to NetGalley for the eARC.
Well-written and breaks down the importance
of simple health endeavors - how we breathe, sleep and drink- in forming a foundation for health in all
other areas. The book offers suggestions and a detailed plan for improving our habits in these critical areas. I found this book informative and readable.
Solid thoughts that are not particularly new but still helpful to hear

"Sleep Drink Breathe: Simple Daily Habits for Profound Long-Term Health" by Michael Breus is a game-changer in the realm of wellness literature. I found it full of actionable tips to improve my sleep and overall well-being and enjoyed the focus on small changes that I can make to my daily routine to have a big impact on my health in the long run.
The book’s strength lies in its simplicity and structure. The writing is clear and easy to understand, even for a non-expert like me. Breus does a great job breaking down complex science into simple ideas you can actually use. Each chapter focuses on a single aspect of daily health—sleep, hydration, breathing—and offers actionable tips that don’t feel overwhelming.
Breus expertly weaves together scientific insights with real-life examples, making the content relatable and inspiring. The book’s holistic approach ensures that readers not only understand the importance of these habits but also feel motivated to implement them consistently.
What sets this book apart is its emphasis on long-term health rather than quick fixes. Breus’s advice is sustainable, making it perfect for those seeking to improve their well-being gradually and effectively. I highly recommend "Sleep Drink Breathe" to anyone looking to make meaningful, lasting changes to their health. I've already started using some of the techniques and I can tell a difference. My energy levels are up and I feel more focused during the day.
It is a great guide for anyone serious about living a healthier, more balanced life.

I can not even begin to say enough good things about this book. It was wonderfully done! I love a great self help book and this one was one of the best I've ever read. So many great points brought up.
I cannot think of a better book to give to someone to introduce them to the world of wellness. Sleep Drink Breath creates the most foundational building blocks to good health. Once these three pillars are established and perfected, readers are encouraged to expand their wellness journey. The language is beginner-friendly and not intimidating. It is a great start for anyone interested in becoming a better version of themselves.
As someone who has more experience in the wellness space, I don’t think this book has a lot to offer me since most of these concepts are basic. I believe the book would have benefited with more statistical analysis and data instead of Dr. Breus’s personal anecdotes of his patients.
I really appreciate how this book has a three week routine that breaks down everything a new explorer can try to establish better health in the three categories. It breaks down what activities to complete at every part of the day and it is based on the reader’s personal chronotype. I really enjoyed taking the quiz to see what chronotype I am (bear), but I do think the quiz should’ve been included in the book rather than linked to Breu’s personal website.
Thought it might sound simple, the author of "Sleep Drink Breathe" has done the research and come up with a plan to help anyone who follows it to thrive. I practiced the breathing exercises yesterday and felt so much clearer and energized. I am going to do the 3-week plan next and see what results are possible. Highly recommended. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

Do we really need to learn how to do this? YES! And here is a very comprehensive manual complete with the hows and the whys we should aim for doing what should be instinctual but often gets forgotten in our daily lives. It might be more detail than some readers might want to page through, but the layout is very easy to accommodate any type of reader.
