make this a little less harsh and sound more conversational: Book Review: The Friend Zone Experiment
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4 stars)
The Friend Zone Experiment is a cute and heartfelt friends-to-lovers story, set against the glamorous backdrop of London and Southeast Asia. Renee Goh, a successful entrepreneur, seems to have it all—except for meaningful relationships. What starts as a journey through familial tension and cultural exploration slowly unfolds into a tale of rediscovery, love, and second chances.
I appreciated the international setting, the exploration of family dynamics, and the way Renee reconnects with her first love, Yap Ket Siong. However, the pacing felt slow for my taste, and while the emotional tension between the characters built nicely, I found myself missing the spicier aspects of romance that I enjoy. The story leaned more toward family drama with light romance than a typical rom-com, so readers expecting something lighter or more fast-paced may feel a bit frustrated.
Still, the book's layers—between Renee’s estranged family, her business pressures, and her unresolved feelings for Ket Siong—give it depth. It was an entertaining read, especially for fans of slower, character-driven romance with a cultural twist, but I was hoping for a little more heat and a quicker resolution to the emotional build-up. If you love slow-burns with a focus on personal and cultural growth, The Friend Zone Experiment could be the perfect escape.

Book Review: The Friend Zone Experiment
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4 stars)
I just finished The Friend Zone Experiment, and it’s such a cute and heartfelt friends-to-lovers story! Set against the glamorous backdrops of London and Southeast Asia, it follows Renee Goh, a successful entrepreneur who seems to have it all—except for those meaningful relationships we all crave. What starts as a journey through family dynamics and cultural exploration slowly blossoms into a tale of rediscovery, love, and second chances.
I really enjoyed the international setting and how the story dives into family dynamics, especially as Renee reconnects with her first love, Yap Ket Siong. That said, the pacing felt a bit slow for my taste. While the emotional tension between the characters builds nicely, I found myself craving a bit more of the spice that typically makes romances pop. The book leans more toward family drama with a sprinkle of romance, so if you’re looking for something light and fast-paced, it might not hit the mark.
That said, the layers of Renee’s estranged family, her business pressures, and her unresolved feelings for Ket Siong definitely add depth to the story. It was an entertaining read, especially for fans of slower, character-driven romances with a cultural twist. If you love slow-burns focused on personal and cultural growth, The Friend Zone Experiment could be just the escape you’re looking for!

I had the pleasure of having the author on my podcast, and she was such a joy to chat with! I would definitely recommend The Friend Zone Experiment to my audience. While I usually lean towards higher spice levels, some of my followers enjoy low spice books, and I think they would appreciate this heartfelt story.

write a review for this book: USA Today bestselling author Naima Simone heats up the page with intensity and wit in this romance between a pro hockey player and a firefighter, both struggling to move on from the past.
Being a firefighter isn’t easy. Especially for a Black woman. Working with family helps a little. But when somebody from your company doesn’t come back from a call, it’s brutal—as in, “How’m I supposed to go on?” brutal.
And one death took me to a really dark place.
A year later, I’m at the Pirates’ hockey training facility. Just another day on the job. Until I find a charred journal. I look inside for the owner’s name, but the words on the page punch me in the gut. It’s like reading my own thoughts. Reliving my own pain.
The journal belongs to Solomon Young, left-winger for the Pirates—a father and widower. When I return it, I’m racked with guilt for the invasion of privacy. The look Solomon gives me is cold as ice.
But damn if that man isn’t hot as hell.
Now he’s stuck in my brain. And fate seems intent on making us face off.
my feedback: I love love love this book. I am not usually into hockey romance but I loved the relationship between the main characters. Hockey described how you did made it sexy and fun and had me wanting to go watch. The chemistry was on fire, the wit had me lmo and I loved the friendships she had. Her brothers and father were a hot mess and very protective, they loved them some football so the dynamic between the mmc and the family was funny and tense at times. I like the single dad aspect to the story as well. The kid was so cute: USA Today bestselling author Naima Simone heats up the page with intensity and wit in this romance between a pro hockey player and a firefighter, both struggling to move on from the past.

I absolutely love, love, love this book! USA Today bestselling author Naima Simone brings the heat with an intense and witty romance between a pro hockey player and a firefighter, both grappling with their pasts.
As a firefighter, especially as a Black woman in a demanding field, the protagonist’s struggles resonate deeply. The story beautifully captures the weight of loss and the journey of healing. When she stumbles upon a charred journal belonging to Solomon Young, a left-winger for the Pirates and a widower, it sets off a series of emotional confrontations that are both poignant and steamy.
I’m usually not drawn to hockey romance, but the chemistry between the main characters is on fire! The way hockey is described made it sexy and fun, and it actually had me wanting to watch a game. The witty banter had me laughing out loud, and I loved the dynamics with her family—her brothers and father are a hot mess in the best way, fiercely protective and deeply invested in their football obsession. Their interactions with Solomon added a mix of humor and tension that made the story even more engaging.
The single dad aspect adds another layer of depth, with his adorable kid stealing the show at times. Overall, this book is a fantastic blend of heart, humor, and sizzling romance. If you're looking for a read that will keep you on the edge of your seat while tugging at your heartstrings, this one’s a must!

Oh my gosh, I am totally head over heels for this book! USA Today bestselling author Naima Simone serves up a sizzling romance between a pro hockey player and a fierce firefighter, both battling their pasts like total champs.
Being a firefighter isn’t just a job; it’s a vibe—especially when you’re a Black woman in a tough field. The protagonist’s journey through grief and healing hits hard, especially when she finds a charred journal belonging to Solomon Young, the oh-so-hot left-winger for the Pirates and a widower. When she reads his words, it’s like reliving her own pain, and returning the journal? Let’s just say it sparks some serious tension!
I’m not usually into hockey romances, but the chemistry between these two is downright electric! The way Naima describes the game makes it feel sexy and exciting—I was practically itching to catch a match! The witty banter had me giggling, and her family dynamics? Total gold. Her brothers and dad are a delightful hot mess, fiercely protective and obsessed with football, which leads to some laugh-out-loud moments with Solomon.
Plus, the single dad angle adds such a sweet touch. His adorable kid is the cherry on top of this emotional rollercoaster. Overall, this book is a delightful blend of heart, humor, and swoon-worthy romance. If you're looking for a read that wraps you up in feels while keeping things fun, you definitely don’t want to miss this one!

write a review about this book: She left home as the local pariah at twenty-two, but when a family tragedy brings her back, she must confront her tortured past—and a new danger in town that no one seems to understand but her.
After years of self-exile, Jacinda “Jac” Brodie is back in Brook Haven, South Carolina. But the small cliffside town no longer feels like home. Jac hasn’t been there since the beloved chief of police fell to his death—and all the whispers said she was to blame.
That chief was Jac’s father.
Racked with guilt, Jac left town with no plans to return. But when her granddad lands in the hospital, she rushes back to her family, bracing herself to confront the past.
Brook Haven feels different now. Wealthy newcomer Faye Arden has transformed the notorious Moor Manor into a quaint country inn. Jac’s convinced something sinister lurks beneath Faye’s perfect exterior, yet the whole town fawns over their charismatic new benefactor. And when Jac discovers one of her granddad’s prized possessions in Faye’s office, she knows she has to be right.
But as Jac continues to dig, she stumbles upon dangerous truths that hit too close to home. With not only her life but also her family’s safety on the line, Jac discovers that maybe some secrets are better left buried.
my feedback: I loved this book, Jac's story had me on the edge of my seat, I felt every emotion she did as I followed her through her anger grief sadness and ultimate acceptance and embracing love of self and family. Jac had a difficult time after her father died as she blamed herself and her mom and community basically shunned her. the entire book we are trying to understand why Jac feels responsible for her fathers death. Meanwhile when she escaped her small town for the big city to become a writer she feel into a situationship with her professor who just used her for his own means and took her story of pain as his own to sell a book about her life unbeknownst to her. The nerve, I was angry for her. The book begins with her Grandfathers death which is a mystery the entire book trying to understand why his pacemaker failed, when Jac figures out who is responsible she is on a mission to share the truth and solve her grandfathers murder, turns out her ex-boyfriend is also happy Jac returned to town because he feels it is their second chance at romance. All and all I enjoyed this story.

I absolutely loved this book! Jacinda “Jac” Brodie’s story had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Returning to her hometown of Brook Haven, South Carolina, after years of self-exile, Jac confronts a past filled with anger, grief, and guilt—emotions that I felt right alongside her. The weight of her father’s tragic death hangs over her, especially with the whispers of blame that forced her to leave.
Jac’s journey through her complicated feelings is beautifully written. I could feel her struggle with self-acceptance and the love she has for her family, even amidst the turmoil. The way her past and present intertwine keeps you guessing, especially as she navigates the town’s new dynamics, including the wealthy newcomer, Faye Arden, who seems too perfect. There’s definitely something sinister lurking beneath that charming exterior, and I was right there with Jac as she uncovered the truth.
I loved how the plot thickens with the mystery surrounding her grandfather's death. Why did his pacemaker fail? Jac’s determination to find out the truth adds a thrilling layer to the story. And let’s talk about her disastrous situationship with her professor in the city—what a nerve! I felt such anger for her when he exploited her pain for his own gain.
To top it off, there’s a second-chance romance angle with her ex-boyfriend that adds a sweet touch to the mix. Overall, this story is a captivating blend of mystery, emotional depth, and personal growth. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a gripping tale of redemption and self-discovery!

The shadow of her father’s tragic death looms large, especially with whispers of blame that forced her to leave.

I was completely engaged as she navigated the town’s new dynamics, particularly with the wealthy newcomer, Faye Arden, who just seems too perfect. As for the romantic angle with her ex-boyfriend—let’s just say it’s complicated. He seems eager for a second chance, but I couldn’t help but wonder if it’s really a sweet reunion or something more tangled. add in a little more detail: this is the synopisi - Every Moment Since is everything you want in a novel--a gripping story, nostalgia for lost childhood, exorbitant love, a deep sense of place, and page-turning tension." --Patti Callahan Henry, New York Times bestselling author of The Secret Book of Flora Lea
A small Southern town. An ordinary Saturday night. A little boy disappears without a trace.
Everyone in Wynotte, North Carolina, knows the name Davy Malcor. Knows the video clip of him juggling four balls, "All at the very same time!" Knows the Marty McFly jacket his mother made for his birthday that he wore proudly, and often. But no one knows what happened to him the night he went missing more than twenty years ago.
When the jacket is unexpectedly uncovered, the cold case reopens, and Davy's family is thrust into yet another media storm. But at the heart of the story are four people forever changed by one single night: Thaddeus Malcor, Davy's older brother, created the life of his dreams by writing a bestselling memoir about his family's experience and is enjoying success and notoriety as a result, even if the memoir doesn't quite reveal the whole story. Tabitha Malcor, his mother, is divorced and living alone, advocating for victims' rights and faithfully cataloging her regrets each week, never including her biggest regret of all. Anissa Weaver was just a kid herself when Davy went missing, and her connection to him is one she cannot reveal as she serves as the Malcor family's Public Information Officer. And, long suspected in Davy's disappearance, Gordon Swift has kept his head down and scraped together a decent life. But the new attention to the case makes it impossible to hide from the public, and the past.
With hauntingly vivid prose, Marybeth Mayhew Whalen peels back the curtain on the inner turmoil of those who were left behind in the small Southern community as they pick up the pieces that remain and press forward into the light to find hope and healing.

Here’s an expanded review that incorporates more details from the synopsis:
In Every Moment Since, Marybeth Mayhew Whalen crafts a gripping narrative that masterfully intertwines nostalgia, love, and the haunting aftermath of a childhood tragedy. Set in the small Southern town of Wynotte, North Carolina, the story begins with the shocking disappearance of a little boy named Davy Malcor, whose joyful video clip of juggling balls and his beloved Marty McFly jacket became symbols of loss for a community. More than twenty years later, the discovery of Davy's jacket reignites the cold case, thrusting his family and the town back into the spotlight.
At the heart of this emotional tale are four individuals forever altered by that fateful night. Thaddeus Malcor, Davy’s older brother, has found success by penning a bestselling memoir about his family’s ordeal, yet it cleverly skirts around the truth of his own regrets. His mother, Tabitha, now divorced and living alone, passionately advocates for victims’ rights while meticulously cataloging her unspoken regrets, with Davy’s disappearance looming large among them. Anissa Weaver, once a child herself when Davy vanished, grapples with her own secrets as she serves as the family’s Public Information Officer, and Gordon Swift, long suspected in Davy's disappearance, must confront his past as new attention threatens his fragile existence.
Whalen's evocative prose dives deep into the emotional landscape of each character, exposing their inner turmoil and the scars left by tragedy. As the story unfolds, readers are invited to navigate the complexities of grief, guilt, and redemption. Every Moment Since is not just a mystery; it’s a poignant exploration of how a community heals and finds hope amid darkness.
This book is a must-read for fans of gripping emotional drama, perfect for those who love the works of Taylor Jenkins Reid and Jessica Knoll. It’s a heart-pounding journey that will keep you guessing until the last page, evoking strong emotions and leaving you reflecting on the power of memory and the bonds of family. I couldn't put it down and would rate it a solid 5 stars!

Got it! Here’s a more detailed review incorporating key elements from the synopsis:
Every Moment Since by Marybeth Mayhew Whalen is a hauntingly beautiful novel that explores the enduring impact of a child's disappearance on a small Southern town and the lives forever altered by that tragic night. Set in Wynotte, North Carolina, the story unfolds when the iconic Marty McFly jacket worn by Davy Malcor resurfaces more than twenty years after his mysterious disappearance.

Here's a revised review that includes your thoughts on Thaddeus and the connection to the Adam Walsh abduction:
Every Moment Since is everything I hoped for and more! This was my first book by Marybeth Mayhew Whalen, who masterfully weaves a tale filled with gripping suspense and deep emotional resonance. From the haunting discovery of Davy Malcor's jacket, twenty-one years after his disappearance, to the heart-wrenching conclusion, I was completely captivated.

Whalen's beautiful prose dives into the complexities of grief, forgiveness, and the weight of lost childhood, making characters like Thaddeus Malcor and his mother, Tabitha, feel profoundly real. Thaddeus, who pens a bestselling memoir about their family's ordeal, grapples with childhood guilt that turns to anger, leading him to be less than fully honest in his narrative. While his actions are understandable given that he was a teenager burdened by the responsibility for Davy's disappearance, it left me with mixed feelings about his character.
The nostalgia throughout the story had me reflecting on real-life tragedies, such as the Adam Walsh abduction, which not only rocked his community but also had a profound impact on the world. Whalen effectively captures that sense of lost innocence, evoking a deep connection to the reader's own memories of childhood and safety.
The vivid sense of place she creates in Wynotte, North Carolina, enhances the story, immersing readers in the emotional turmoil of this small community. You won't want to miss Every Moment Since. write a review for deeper than the dead - here is the synopsis - Someone’s found the skeleton in the closet, and it’s not the only one. Wall Street Journal bestselling author Debra Webb presents an emotional new mystery.
Crime analyst and newly disgraced deputy police chief Vera Boyett doesn’t visit home often, and she certainly doesn’t venture back into the cave on her family land. But when the remains of her long-missing stepmother are discovered, Vera will have to face a past that threatens all she is.
She and her sister Eve had a fairy-tale childhood: good until it was tragic, with a stepmother they never found a bond with. At least they had each other, a baby half-sister, and a mutual devotion that would have them do the unthinkable.
It’s a summer in small-town Tennessee, so thick with humidity it could drown you and so rife with secrets it could smother you. And deep beneath the surface, there are more bodies than you’d think…

Webb’s new book delivered in on all fronts. She writes some of the smartest suspense novels I’ve ever read, blending procedural, psychological, and family dramas in a way that makes her stories propulsive and satisfying. This novel took twists and turns I didn’t see coming—never underestimate the secrets a small Southern town can keep.
i liked it - give it four stars - what I liked most is the mystery, and how slowly layer by layer details emerged. Some of my guesses were right but the ending was not what I expected. i liked the closeness of the sisters, the saying you know someone loves you if they will help you bury a body. pacing was done well, the emotions resonatwed with me, I thought what would I do in those situation, made me question.

Here's a four-star review for Deeper Than the Dead by Debra Webb that incorporates your thoughts and highlights the aspects you enjoyed:
Review: Deeper Than the Dead
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Deeper Than the Dead by Debra Webb is a gripping mystery that had me hooked from the very first page. This novel explores the complexities of family dynamics against the backdrop of a small Southern town, where secrets are buried deeper than the dead.
Vera Boyett, a crime analyst and newly disgraced deputy police chief, reluctantly returns to her hometown after the remains of her long-missing stepmother are discovered in a cave on her family's land. Webb masterfully reveals the mystery layer by layer, with each twist and turn keeping me guessing. Some of my predictions turned out to be right, but the ending completely caught me off guard in a way that I didn’t see coming.
What I appreciated most was the emotional depth woven throughout the narrative. The bond between Vera and her sister, Eve, is beautifully depicted, showcasing the saying, “You know someone loves you if they will help you bury a body.” This connection added a rich layer to the story, as the sisters grapple with their past and the unearthing of long-buried family secrets.
Webb’s pacing is spot on, allowing the tension to build gradually and resonating deeply with me. I found myself reflecting on what I would do in Vera's situation, as she navigates a landscape filled with danger and moral dilemmas. The humid summer in Tennessee serves as the perfect backdrop for a tale that is both atmospheric and haunting.
Overall, Deeper Than the Dead is an expertly plotted, emotionally charged thriller that left me eager for more. If you're a fan of mysteries that blend procedural elements with psychological and family drama, this is a must-read!
This was a quick read. Ive read a similar book but I still really enjoyed this one and found it a bit unique in some areas.
Lots of twists and turns in this one! A little too much murder for me! I thought I knew where this was going and I felt like the author tried to keep you in suspense by throwing the reader off the actual killer for a long time. Maybe a little too drawn out for me, but I liked the main character and I could see reading more books that follow her! Thank you NetGalley for the arc!
I enjoyed this audio book and story. I liked how pieces slowly unraveled through the whole book and kept you guessing.
Vera Boyett had escaped her small-town upbringing and risen to the ranks of Chief of an elite team, but an internal scandal has left most of her team suspended and her job in limbo. By incredibly bad timing, she gets a call from her sister that the body of Vera's stepmother, who was presumed to have run away, has been found in a cave on the family property. This discovery threatens to expose dark secrets of the past that will affect Vera's whole family. During the investigation 3 more bodies are found and the question of who these people are and who may have put them in this secluded hidden cave seems to be pointing to Vera's father. Could he be a serial killer?
This was a twisty mystery with a budding romance between Vera and her old high school flame who is now the sheriff. Vera's father is in a facility with a failing memory but things that he says in his delusional state are making Vera uncomfortable. Vera's sister works with the dead and claims to be able to speak to them, and even the sheriff has come to her for help on occasion. Their step sister has led a very sheltered life and much of what happens is too overwhelming for her.
There are a lot of moving pieces to this and with any small town everyone seems to be in everyone else's business. Good start to a new series and I'm looking forward to the next one due out next year.
Yeah this one just didn't do it for me. It was utterly slow and boring. The beginning had promise but then it just went downhill. It lacked to keep my attention, nothing was happening and then ending left me unsatisfied.
It's been a few years since I've had the opportunity to read a Debra Webb book and I forgot how much I enjoyed her writing. In "Deeper than the Dead" we're introduced to a new leading lady, Vera Boyett, in the midst of a career upheaval and facing secrets from her past being unearthed. I found many relatable characters and intertwining stories that keep you guessing as the bigger picture is slowly unveiled. A mix of small-town triller and a budding (or rather a reigniting) romance balanced to keep me wanting to finish "just one more chapter"... to the tune of finishing this book within just 36 hours.
Vera's stepmother was horrible, and it was a relief when she was finally gone. Fast forward 20 years, and her remains are found on the family farm in rural Tennessee. But how did she end up there, and whose are the other 3 bodies hidden in the cave? This mystery really kept my attention, and I was constantly wondering who the killer was, and what was actually going on inside Vera's family, as well as the small town. I listened to the audiobook, and I really enjoyed the narrator. I kept thinking about this book even after I put my headphones down. I can't wait to read the second one in the series.
