Another fantastic YA thriller by Chelsea Ichaso, the author of Dead Girls Can’t Tell Secrets. We Were Warned had me hooked from the Prologue and the diary entries added another layer of mystery to the story! Chelsea had me suspicious of almost every character at some stage along the way, and I was wrong every time! But, the twist...I can certainly say I did not see that coming. Highly recommend this one, 5 stars!
Overall I really liked this book, but not as much as Chelsea’s other stories! I really enjoyed reading the various journal entries and felt really drawn to certain characters. I was constantly laughing throughout the book too.
In Fairport, there was a murder 20 years ago, a shocking murder where a mother stabbed her teenage son to death, while her daughter was hiding in another room and heard the yelling and screaming.
20 years later the ruins will be bulldozed to create something new, so some seniors decided to complete a documentary and sneak in one night. There is an Urban Legend that says that anyone who steps on the property is cursed to die. In the past other students have died. Eden is kind of the pariah of the area because her father left the community after he had swindled many off of money and left people in a bad place. So she does not have a good reputation even though she has done nothing wrong but some of the students and their parents hold Eden responsible for her father's actions.
However, the documentary shooting is cut short when one of the seniors is found dead with the appearance that he had committed suicide by jumping off the cliff. Eden is not convinced that he committed suicide and her suspicion intensifies when another of the seniors that night commits suicide at school.
Wow! This one was intense and good! I enjoyed the story, the eerie mystery surrounding the estate, and then the uncanny ghostly appearance of the murderer following the students around. I enjoyed the whole urban legend aspect surrounding this mystery, every town has them and this one came to life in this mystery! The plot of the story is awesome, there are layers of mystery and aspects that show up, and answers that are found! If you love enemies to lovers then you would love this one! This story grips you, holds your attention, and keeps you on the edge of your seat! Once you start this one you won't be able to put it down because you're hooked and want to know who is behind it all and if the urban legend is true!
Thank. you Sourcebooks Fire and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this one!
We Were Warned is a fast-paced and exciting YA book! The plot revolves around a mysterious place that is rumored to be cursed due a legacy of violent murders. After the senior class sneaks onto the property for a party, sparking a murder streak that seems to be taking out teens one by one, it’s up to one group of students to decide- is the curse real, or is there a terrifying killer on the loose?
This is a fun read! The author does a good job of setting up some scenes that are actually pretty scary, and the mystery keeps you guessing. There were a few places where the reader really does have to suspend disbelief, but the book is still a fun ride that I recommend to anyone who would like a few spooky thrills!
Thank you to NetGalley for the e-Arc.
This is a great story for those in love with mysteries and ghosts. Unfortunately the ending was a bit of a let down and the characters you would get invested in would be killed off which just kind of bummed me out.
Still a well-written story!

How would you feel to live in a town that was right off the coast and had a haunted hotel village …
Well, I would personally never set foot in this village but as you know these books don’t go that way and the teens in these types of books always step foot in the village, but may not step out of the village. Thanks to a murderer on the loose.
I thought this was a fun easy read for a YA thriller!
So I did really enjoy the very beginning of this book and the very ending. It all came very full circle. Everything was answered, but I will say that the middle had a lot of romance. Which kind of lost me in the plot so I was starting to get a little bit bored, but I will say most will enjoy the romance in here and I really did like the ending. It wasn’t what I expected and you will never catch me setting foot in this town👀
3 YA stars.
Twenty years ago there was a shocking murder in Fairport Village which closed the mansion down (which mansion? THE mansion. Every small town in a thriller has one. You know this.) However kids have continued to party in the ruins because…well, if there’s a place, kids are going to go there to drink beer, smoke dope and have sex….not that _I_ ever did any of those things, of course. Pure as the snow, was I! But I digress.
Now two of the kids have been killed, leaders no to talk of a curse. And today Eden Stafford, a pariah of the high school is working on a documentary with another student when, again, tragedy strikes. Can Eden and her enemies figure out what is happening?
This is YA for YAs, definitely and I’ve rated it as such. It’s not bad from that standard, but not the greatest, either.
This YA thriller was creepy and fast paced. The ruins of a house on the beach where a notorious murder took place will be demolished soon. Eden and some friends decide to go for one last hurrah before the place is torn down. Unfortunately, someone is found dead in their ruins and now the friends are trying to get away from a creepy stranger. Eden also has a past...
This book, as mentioned is fast paced and the beach house itself is almost like a character in the book. I absolutely loved the creepy setting and the twists and turns that take place. I definitely recommend this book to any thriller lover!
Chelsea Ichaso does it again! I read my first book by her last December and I have now read them all! She is a fantastic writer and her YA thrillers are so so good. This book was such a good read. Following a group of teens who are trying to uncover a town curse, it is revealed there are more secrets that have yet to come to light. Highly recommend if you like thrillers and YA books. My one teeny tiny complaint is that the teenagers some time talked unlike teenagers. But thats really it. The end was so good and left me with all the emotions.
Overall I give this one a 4.5 (rounded up) stars!
Thank you to the publisher, the author, and Netgalley for a copy of this work in exchange for my honest review
Really good book. Love the plot line and character development. Will definitely recommend to friends and family
5 stars
Thank you Sourcebooks Fire and Netgalley for the ARC.
Chelsea Ichaso does it again. I don't know why but her books always hit in such a weird way. This book is definitely a bit better in terms of thriller mystery. At least compared to The summer she went missing. I enjoy both but I definitely see the progression of her writing And pacing is significantly better. Still both books are amazing. I cannot wait to see more of Chelsea's works.
What a read! I've shied away from YA thrillers for a while because I felt they were a bit repetitive, but this one was the first one in a while that kept me guessing until the very end! This is the perfect combo of a suspenseful thriller and light romance with just a touch of paranormal to keep things interesting without going over the top. Ichaso had a quick, engaging writing style that kept things moving, making this book an easy one to finish in one sitting. I can't wait to see what she comes out with next - thanks for the ARC!
Eden attends an overnight party at Fairport Village, an abandoned resort town known for being cursed, in the story We Were Warned by Chelsea Ichaso. When one student winds up dead at the party, Eden and the rest of the teenagers try to solve the mystery and break the curse.
The story is a quick read, with a creepy atmosphere. The story is a mix of thriller and paranormal, with a touch of teen romance. I thought it was a solid story that keeps you interested and is not easy to solve.
Thanks to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Fire for the advanced copy. The opinions are my own.
I love a good YA Thriller, and this fit the bill. The setting of this book was fantastic. It was very atmospheric. It was written in such an eerie way; it really captured the mood and made me want to keep reading to figure out what was going on. The supernatural element was a nice addition, and it was great. I think it is always an accomplishment when a book can make me feel so invested because of the setting. It’s like the setting takes on a life of it’s own and becomes almost like another character. Even though this was a thriller, there is a romance sub-plot and it was a great addition to the story. The pacing on this book was fast, which was exactly what I needed. I prefer books that are faster paced, because it really helps me turn off my mind and just really get into the story.
If you’re looking for a really fun YA thriller, then you should check this one out.
Huzzah! A YA thriller where I, for once, had no clue who the dang killer was! Looking back some clues I missed seem like a DUH now but I think Chelsea did an exceptionally well job with this one.
This curse starting beyond what Mrs Blackmore says that fateful night and continuing with each no loss of life.
This curse and the lore of this place spans decades and each person seemingly unrelated to the other making it more believable that something supernatural is abound.
Great read from start to finish, worth of a binge read!
"We Were Warned" is a YA thriller written by Chelsea Ichaso. Eden is a senior in high school, dealing with the fallout of her father stealing money from her friends' parents' business and leaving his family. She's trying to earn money, so she agrees to help another student film a documentary style video about a local urban legend, where students who visit a run down resort have been murdered. When the student she is helping ends up dead, Eden is thrown into the mystery along with some of her former friends. Will they be able to stop the deaths and figure out what is going on? A recommended purchase for YA thriller collections.
Fairport Village is known for its curse that has claimed the lives of three local people before Eden and her "boss" Henry decide to investigate the local legend. This decision leads to the death of two more teenagers from the town. as Eden and her classmates try to figure out what lead to the deaths of the fellow students, there's a mysterious figure in a cloak that has started following them around town. Something wants them dead, that's for sure.
This was a fantastic read with good pacing that kept my interest from start to finish. While the book feels like it's going to be a horror or supernatural storyline--especially with this cloaked figure that appears every now and then -- this is actually a mystery. The main and secondary characters were pretty well developed.
Given the current controversy over the content of library books, I feel like I should point out that beer is mentioned in the beginning of the book, during the beach party scene. There is also some swearing at the end of the book. That's not enough to keep me from purchasing this book for my school library, but we all face different circumstances at this time.

“We Were Warned” by Chelsea Ichaso delivers a suspenseful YA thriller that blends small-town legend with teenage drama and mystery. Set in the town of Fairport, haunted by a curse stemming from the tragic story of a mother who allegedly murdered her son, the book follows Eden, an outsider who is pulled into a twisted investigation when a classmate’s death reignites fear and suspicion in her community. While working on a documentary about the case, Eden and her estranged friends are stalked by an unknown figure, leaving them to wonder if they’re being haunted by a ghost or pursued by a more earthly, malevolent force. This book does feature some bullying as well as some death scenes, including what seemed to be a suicide, so be aware of these content warnings before going into the book.
Ichaso’s writing is taut and engaging, skillfully building tension as Eden, already reeling from her father's criminal scandal, becomes entangled in the town’s sinister lore. As bodies start piling up, Eden realizes that the curse may not be just a story—and that her own family might hold disturbing secrets connected to it. The pace of “We Were Warned” is relentless, with each chapter bringing new clues, suspects, and hair-raising twists that keep you on edge, though the middle does meander a bit with some subplots needing more exploration. The mystery unravels in a satisfying way, with revelations that are difficult to predict, thanks to cleverly placed red herrings and suspenseful plot twists.
The romance between Eden and Caleb adds emotional depth, though it veers into familiar territory with misunderstandings and stereotypical high school dynamics. It starts off as almost a bully romance where Caleb, while never directly bullying Eden, was still friends with her bullies. However, Caleb and Eden’s relationship is mainly filled with misunderstandings, which are fortunately resolved quickly. Some characters, like the jealous “mean girl” who earns a bit of a redemption arc, was pretty trope-laden and one-dimensional, but they contribute to the story’s atmosphere. Eden’s journey with Caleb provides moments of tension and relief from the darker mystery at hand, even if some elements lean into YA clichés.
The supernatural elements, reminiscent of “The Ring” with the supposed curse, add a creepy layer as Eden and her friends are pursued through the eerie, beachy landscape of Fairport. The book’s mix of horror and mystery keeps you guessing about whether paranormal forces are at play, adding to its unsettling tone. The final reveal was a bit of a stretch, but Ichaso was still able to effectively craft an atmosphere that feels immersive and spine-chilling.
“We Were Warned” is a fast-paced, thoroughly entertaining read with a well-woven mystery. Fans of Ichaso’s work, as well as YA thrillers with supernatural twists, will enjoy this atmospheric and twist-filled novel, where no secret stays buried for long.
We Were Warned bynew to me author C. Ichaso is a ya thriller, published by Sourcebooks Fire.
Reading the blurb I was intrigued, thought lets give the book a try and hours later I was breathlessly readingf the last chapter.
A story that grips the reader with both jhands, doesn't let go and stays days after finishing this novel.
I recommend the book, 5 stars.
