Thanks, NetGalley for the ARC!
The concept was very fun: pirate king’s daughter, meeting up with her father and the adventures that take place because everyone is after her. The story was hard to follow at times and the illustrations made it a little difficult to distinguish between characters. But even with those issues, it was fun and interesting.
The story felt like it had a few jumps that skipped over some things. The transitions between scenes felt sudden. The story was basic, but overall interesting for middle grade readers.
The Pirate Princess is a super fun graphic novel that focuses on Julie, the daughter of the Pirate King. I truly loved the illustrations in this one. It was very action-focused & there was nearly constant combat, but that fit perfectly for a pirate book.
I liked Julie a lot as a protagonist, and was very invested in her pirate guardians. For a book that was so short, I felt like the world/character building was done very well. I wish there had been a more concrete ending, but I'm looking forward to another volume!
Thanks to NetGalley, Luca Frigerio, and Mad Cave Studios for the chance to read and review! My thoughts and opinions are my own.
Get ready to discover a new thrilling adventure set on the high seas, Julie lives on a remote island, her favourite hobby is conducting experiments mainly making stuff blow up, however, one day her father summons her, which sets off a dramatic chain of events including dramatic fights on the high seas, family secrets and a mysterious woman trying to track her down, little does Julie there is more going on than she realises.
If you’re a fan of swashbuckling, adventurous graphic novels with a whole lot of family drama packed in, this book is perfect for you.
3 out of 5 Stars.
It was fun good time. Very quick. And great for a quick and enjoyable piratey fix.
Thank you NetGalley and Mad Cave Studios for providing me with this arc in exchange for my honest review.
Cool cover, I love the blue and pink together and the edge to it!
I love that this was a full color comic, the illustrations are not my favorite style but I loved the colors that were used, they really made me feel like I was at sea! So great vibe but unfortunately the story needs some or actually a lot of work if I’m honest.
This felt like the team responsible for the creation of the story, summed up the events that were going to happen and then quit. Everything felt very basic, unfinished and boring. If I look at what I wrote in my review notebook, a lot happened but nothing was executed properly or even in a remotely interesting way apart from maybe 1 side character and one event, but those could not save this underdeveloped comic. I will not be surprised if I have forgotten this comic completely, by next week.
This wasn’t very fun to read and the images weren’t super exciting. I am not super into comic books and was hoping this would be a good segue.
My daughter and I LOVED this book! We loved the adventures and the main characters. She would ask every night to read more and more. It was a beautifully done book.
I had my kids look at this one since that is the target age they said "It looks good, with a good story, good transitions, and good drawings."
I would have to agree that the overall story was catching and I enjoyed the artwork. It slightly reminded me of Daughter of the Pirate King.
Julie is the daughter of the Pirate King. After several years of living in hiding, two old friends arrive to train her and protect her from her father's dangerous enemies. The story is engaging and reads very quickly due to its brevity. Additionally, the illustrations and color palette are incredible, adding a notable visual appeal. However, despite the promising plot, I personally couldn't get hooked on the narrative or connect with the characters. In summary, it's a good story, but it didn't fully capture me.

Thank you NetGalley and MadCave Maverick for the opportunity to read this graphic novel in exchange for an honest review!
Julie, the daughter of the Pirate King, lives safely on a remote island in the Pacific Ocean, until two pirates come to take her away. Her father’s sworn enemy is looking for her and they can’t risk it. But during her journey she will find that friends and foes really look alike.
What captivated me at first was the drawing style: it reminded me of the perhaps most underrated Disney movie ever, Treasure Planet. And the vibes were it, for the most part. Vibrant colors and more muted tones, sketched but recognizable characters.
What threw me off, though, was the writing style. It felt artificial and it did’t convey the piratesque vibes I needed, let alone the necessary distinction between the characters. The story is fast paced but the events do not develop as seamlessly as they should; 120 pages packed with action but they lacked the necessary introspection to make the reader understand the characters' motivations and, perhaps most importantly, care for them.
"Julie has two goals in life: to make things explode and to become the best pirate who has ever existed!"
So, this quote from the blurb caught my attention immediately. (Who doesn't love a good explosion?)
It's not a terribly accurate blurb. The story is denser than that. But it does catch the eye. (And gunpowder IS one of Julie's hobbies.)
This is a very dense graphic novel, for being as short as it is. Dialogue driven and lots of action. The color pallette does make a couple of the scenes (especially towards the end) hard to decipher, but otherwise, I did enjoy the art style.

this book was very short (120 pages) and very fast paced, a lot of things were happening, there's some mystery and twists.
Julie is a daughter of the pirate king who has to leave her house to meet her mysterious father. in the process there's some kidnapping and fights.
perfect quick read for one evening to get out of the reading slump!
