The German resistance to Nazism included unarmed and armed opposition and disobedience to the Nazi regime by various movements, groups and individuals by various means, from attempts to assassinate Adolf Hitler or to overthrow his regime, defection to the enemies of the Third Reich and sabotage against the military and the apparatus of repression and attempts to organise armed struggle, to open protests, rescue of persecuted persons, dissidence and "everyday resistance".
German resistance was not recognized as a united resistance movement during the height of Nazi Germany, unlike Italy, Denmark, the Soviet Union, Poland, Greece, Yugoslavia, France, the Netherlands, Czechoslovakia, and Norway. The German resistance consisted of small, isolated groups that were unable to mobilise mass political opposition.
Kiel is the capital and most populous city in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein.It is Germany's largest city on the Baltic Sea. Kiel is one of Germany's major maritime centres, known for a variety of international sailing events, including the annual Kiel Week. Kiel is also known for the Kiel Mutiny, when sailors refused orders to prepare to engage the British Navy in the last weeks of WWI, sparking the German Revolution which led to the abdication of the Kaiser and the formation of the Weimar Republic. Kiel has also been one of the traditional homes of the German Navy's Baltic fleet, and continues to be a major high-tech shipbuilding centre.Kiel is an important sea transport hub, and a number of passenger ferries to Sweden, Norway, Lithuania and other countries operate from here. Moreover, today, Port of Kiel is a popular destination for cruise ships touring the Baltic Sea.During WWII, Kiel remained one of the major naval bases and shipbuilding centres of the German Reich. There was also a slave labour camp for the local industry. Owing to its status as a naval port and as a production site for submarines, Kiel was heavily bombed by the Allies.
Flensburg was the final seat of the Third Reich from 1 May 1945, following Adolf Hitler's death, until the Third Reich's final, formal dissolution in early June 1945.

A different historical fiction type book for me. I found this to be romantic and the writing to be respectful. I bought the relationship; this might be a first for me.
This is more about working together as a couple than the war and its atrocities.
Yes, the dark side of WWII is where the story comes from. However, the power of love came from the Author's grandparents.
I would have no problem reading this aloud privately (nursing home) and I would recommend for young people transitioning into adult books.
This book is so beautifully written. It is based on a true story of an electrical and seamstress who find love during WWII. I highly recommend this book to all who love historical fiction. The added bonus of this being based off a true story is the icing on top. Powerful and riveting!
An interesting love story set in WW2 Nazi Germany. The protagonists in the story are aq young German couple who are against the war and the Nazi's. The hardships endured by the two are heart-wrenching and inspirational. The story is well-told with solid characters and plot. A good read!
Thank you to #NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Author Monica Granlove has written the sensitive and honest story of her German grandparents and their horrific experiences during WWII Germany. Not going along with the Nazi way of thinking meant that their lives were in danger at all times and the story of their survival is well written. Recommended reading.
¡¡¡4.5!!!
A touching story of love in WWII times based on the true story of the author's grandmothers.
A historical fiction that makes you sigh about true love and the tragedies it can take to overcome to strengthen your relationship.
Here we have Bruno and Karla, who fall in love during the war times, he works as an electrician and she as a seamstress, both do not agree with the Nazi teachings, but they are cornered in the middle of all this horrible reality.
At some point Bruno is called to enlist and must do the impossible in order to return to Karla and her family.
It's a great story and it hits you harder when you know it's based on a true story and makes you aware of those people who survived with tenacity.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with this wonderful ARC.
This is a WWII story about a German family. They don't agree with Hitler and are trying to survive. There is a lot of everyday details and different perspectives than other novels I have read recently. This novel is based on the author's grandparents. I received an Advance Review Copy and am leaving a review voluntarily.

Germans Karla and Bruno fall in love as the Nazi party rises to power. Karla’s father and sister immediately join the Nazi party and start to preach its beliefs. Bruno’s large family is divided, with several of his brothers joining the party, while others do their best to fade into the background. Karla and Bruno hide their beliefs while secretly helping the Jewish family that Bruno lodges with. After they are married, Bruno is conscripted into service, leaving Karla behind to navigate the treachery and destruction that surrounds her.
This book was told from Karla and Bruno’s point of view after they survived the war when they are being interviewed in the 1950’s. This caused the tense throughout to be a bit odd. I thought the 1950’s storyline was completely unnecessary and took away from the story itself. I just wanted to read what happened during the war, not the characters telling the story to someone after the fact. That element was just odd. Overall, 3 out of 5 stars.
I really enjoyed the historical setting in this story and how everything was beautifully done and realistic. The characters felt like they were supposed to and enjoyed that this was a true story, it really added the charm of this novel. I appreciated that the author used their story to tell what was needed and I enjoyed getting to go on this journey with them. Monica Granlove has a strong writing style that worked with what I was hoping for and look forward to reading more from Monica Granlove.
Based on a true story about a couple separated by WWII. It tells of his fight to get back to her. Very deep and touching.
This book, based on the true story of the author's grandparents, is both an endearing love story and a historical account of what happens to people caught in the net of the rise of the Nazis. Karla and Bruno, who meet and marry in 1936, are Germans caught in the web of the Nazi party. They are terrified by the Nazis and can clearly see the evil of the party and the fuhrer. They are sympathetic to Jewish friends and endeavor to save their lives by helping them escape with the assistance of some roaming Americans.
Bruno and Karla are both hard workers, he as an electrician and she as a seamstress. Bruno is an incredible and skilled "fix it" person, expertise that eventually saves him from the more brutal and horrific side of war. Once he is forced to sign up with the Nazi army, he is able to repair things with aplomb, thus saving him from going off to war to kill other soldiers. Toward the end of the book, when Bruno is captured by the Russian army, he spends almost two years slowly traveling mostly on foot from Siberia back to Germany. This part of the book is moving and expertly drawn, taking in the reader with its descriptions of land and people.
Bruno and Karla end up having four children, the first of whom is a disabled child, eventually killed by the Germans as he is not a perfect child who will fit the description of the perfect German offspring. Bruno and Karla then have three more children, and as parents, they could not be more supportive, loving, and perceptive.
In spite of the challenges of their lives, and as they try to evade all contact with the German military, both Bruno and Karla sympathize with and help others. They are perfect examples of how people can survive with tenacity and hard work. By the time the book reaches its end, we, as readers, feel privileged to have spent a number of years with this amazing couple and their family.
There are a number of grammatical errors that I hope an editor will fix, but nonetheless, I feel that I was fortunate to have the opportunity to read this book and thank the publisher and Net Galley for this chance.
Thanks net galley for this incredible true story of survival and love.
