Frozen World
Endless Winter is an excellent survival story, with a weather event that seems all-too possible according to today's headlines. The authors have skillfully written a sequel continuing the story of a small group of survivors. Together, they contend with the relentlessly frigid conditions, finding other survivors whose actions range from desperate to predatory.
The authors have portrayed them sensitively. Fiona was a favorite from the first book, but I have to say, my favorite characters are the goats, particularly the big, gnarly old Ramses, and Smoke, the dog. I admired the humans, but the animals stole the show many times.
Thank you to authors Riley Miller and Grace Hamilton, Relay Publishing, and Netgalley for the free advance readers’ copy of the book. I'm under no obligation to give a positive review, but I'm glad to do it! It was a terrific read.
Endless Winter was initially slow to get into for me due to several references early on that this was a sequel (which I wasn't aware of). Whilst some of the back story of the characters would have been handy to know, eventually I got to know the characters and settle into the story. And it sure was an action packed story. Rather than a single protagonist, we followed a group of six protagonists. Living in a dystopian world of ice and snow, they were simply travelling to try and find a warmer place to settle. I love dystopian novels which is what attracted me to this book. As our group travelled, all they found was one life threatening situation after another., and very few friendly people. Against all odds they managed to somehow come through these dire circumstances and continue their journey. It was definitely a rollicking story and a fast read. Four of the group were teenagers with little life experience so I did feel it was a little far-fetched how they seemed to cope with, and get through their various ordeals. I also felt the story lacked emotion and just careened from one scene to the next. All in all this was a fun read from an author who clearly knows how to tell a terrific story.
As the Ice Age covers our earth, this family must seek a warmer environment to be safe in this changed world. Survival is in their hands and each one must make good choices to ensure they will make it through a dangerous journey.
Grace Hamilton is one of my favorite "end of life as we know it" authors. She is joined in ENDLESS WINTER by Riley Miller, a native Alaskan who has experience in the damage cold can bring to the unprepared.
The battle against climate change has been waged in many small steps. When science attempts a large scale battle, their efforts will force the Earth into an overnight ice age. As resources disappear in the extreme cold, the population begins to migrate south, looking for more moderate temperatures and better living conditions. As in any apocalypse story, there will be confrontations along the way that will force individuals to band together for safety. Many of the challenges they will face will come as a suprise to readers that have never considered a "prepper" lifestyle. I'm always happy to see another Grace Hamilton book. She has written many, but never repeats stories. Definitely a 5 star read.
