Never have I cared less about a group of characters. This was full of selfish. egotistical characters, and I just didn't care what happened to them. I got to about 90% then noticed a review that said the last sentence revealed the whole plot so I skipped to that and immediately rolled my eyes.

“My therapist says we all play roles within our families. And once you become accustomed to playing a specific role, you find ways to repeat the same patterns into adulthood.”

The Agarwals are gathering for a family reunion on a remote, private island of the coast of Scotland. The family’s multimillion-dollar company is about to be sold, and the succession plan is set. But secrets abound amongst the three children who will do just about anything to get their hands on the money they are owed. Throw in an unwanted island guest and some new members to the family and you have yourself one wild high-stakes weekend that will end in murder.

I love a good locked-door mystery and this was elevated to locked island status. It was very atmospheric, and its slow build kept me turning pages. I was a little confused by all the characters at first, but once I got them all straightened out in my head, the narrative flowed. The plot was good, but not anything super compelling. It was a solid read that had me seeing it through to the end.

Thank you to Trisha Sakhlecha, Penguin Group Viking and NetGalley for an advance digital copy for an honest review.

In this locked room psychological, everyone’s got a secret and everyone’s a suspect. Parsing out who it is is part of the tension of reading this great debut, and it kept this reader turning the pages to find out who it was.

Let’s just say I didn’t see it, and you’ll want to pick this up to find out what I’m talking about.

This moved a little slower, trying to painstakingly fill the reader in in the history and secrets of this family. You may think you know what happened, and that is why I’ll read the next book by Trisha Sakhlecha.

QOTD: What is something you want to do or a goal you wish to accomplish in 2025? (Not a reading goal- just anything!)
I want to travel more and have more experiences with friends & family.

Thank you to the author, Pamela Dorman Books and @netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my review.

The Argarwal family is one of great influence and power. When it comes time for the patriarch to retire , the children and their spouses rise to collect what they feel they are owed. A true story of greed and what lengths one will go to to ensure the philosophy of “family first .” I enjoyed both the Indian and Scottish heritage embedded into this story.

Really fun. I literally ran through this book following a rich, dysfunctional Indian family celebrating a wedding anniversary on an isolated island in Scotland. Secrets pro max

Wow. The Inheritance by Trisha Sakhlecha really took me by surprise. This part of the blurb “Most family reunions end in tears. This one will end in murder.” was more than enough to get my interest, but it didn’t truly prepare me for how much I would end up enjoying this book. This is a smart, well crafted, totally surprising suspense filled mystery/thriller. Take a wildly dysfunctional family (with many characters you’ll not like…nor are you meant to) put them an in isolated locale, jack up the stress and tension, and then watch them go at each other. I’d never read anything by Ms. Sakhelecha before but if the rest of her books are this good then she’s just earned herself a new diehard fan. There so many twists and tons of misdirection that kept me guessing until the very end. Thanks so much to PENGUIN GROUP Viking | Pamela Dorman Books for allowing me to the chance to read and review an. ARC of this wonderful book.

If you like dysfunctional family drama with a touch of mystery, this one's for you. Secrets, lies, manipulation, murder…this one has it all. I found this plot to be just short of addicting. These people are the definition of dysfunctional. These “kids” are loyal to a fault and to a couple of the most narcissistic parents that I have ever come across. More than once I had to pick my jaw up because I was just floored by how manipulative these people were. The characters are well written with depth and complexity but don’t expect to like them. They are all incredibly flawed and not in a good way. The only one that is even remotely likable is Owen and you only get about 3 minutes of him. When you get to the epilogue you think that you have it all figured out but then you read the last line of the book. Ummm…what? I read it twice and I was so mad at myself because I should have known. I. Should. Have. Known!!! And maybe you will but I didn’t and I was so pissed. I enjoyed this immensely but something I can’t put my finger on is holding me back from giving it 5 stars.

THE INHERITANCE by Trisha Sakhlecha takes place on the private island of Kilbryde, located off the coast of Scotland. It's a locked room mystery.
This was a quick and fast-paced read. A twisty, dark tale about a rich family. The ending was unexpected.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book.

The Inheritance is filled with family secrets and surprises which are slowly and carefully revealed at a family gathering on a remote private island in Scotland. It was fast paced and intense with everything coming together to be a highly interesting book.

A husband, wife, two daughters, son and his wife. This is the Agarwal family at the core. But this family is SO much more. The family has come together to celebrate the parent's anniversary and hear the father's plans for his multi million dollar company. They expect him to announce his retirement and who will be suceeding him. At the beginning of the story, we learn than someone dies during this reunion. But who, what, where, when and why is revealed one clue at a time. The atmosphere is dark, each family member has a vested interest in the announcement and has a plan in place to assure they get what they are due. Then you have the parents. Buying love and loyalty one promise at a time.
An excellent mystery filled with surprises. Sakhlecha has set off this family's explosive entrance.

Thank you to Netgalley, Pamela Dorman Books and PRH Audio for a copy provided for an honest review.

This story is told primarily in first person alternating points of view from Myra and her sister-in-law, Zoe with a series of interspersed chapters labeled “Now” by an ambiguous narrator. I mostly listened to the audiobook for this one, just starting with the digital review copy to learn the family members before settling in with the listen. The audio is narrated by Avita Jay, Ellie Kendrick, and Tamaryn Payne. This was my first listen from all three narrators. Initially, I had a little bit of a problem remembering which character chapter I was in but once I settled into the story, I thought the audio was fantastic from the characterizations and family drama to the Scottish Island setting.

The Agarwal family has gathered to celebrate the anniversary of their patriarch, Raj, and his wife, Shalini, on a private island off the west coast of Scotland. After a recent health crisis, the family is breathless with anticipation for the retirement of Raj and the possible sale of their family business in a deal that has been spearheaded by his son and Zoe’s husband, Aseem. Myra needs the money to hold onto the private island where she is in the process of creating a luxury retreat, while Zoe aspires for Aseem to run his own business free from family control.

Everyone in the family has an agenda and secrets. I found this story filled with tension and family drama. I admit to probably paying more attention to Zoe’s story over the others. She married into the family and Aseem was clearly a mama’s boy who would always take mommy’s side over everyone else including his wife. Zoe was ensconced in one of those mothers-in-law from hell stories that had me screaming and frustrated. No way would I put up with some of the stuff she did. Myra was preoccupied with her needs for the island and sister, Aisha, with her new boyfriend. But make no mistake. Everyone had a vested interest in what happened with the family business and more importantly, the money.

My only critique would probably be that I wish the Scottish island had been a little more atmospheric and the local history story had been more interspersed and drawn out. The murder doesn’t occur anytime soon, so sit back and watch the family drama. Recommended to readers that enjoy dysfunctional family stories especially the richy kind where family loyalty and greed go hand and hand.

This was a fast paced read with a lot of deep character development. I loved incorporating the Scottish land and all of the rich family drama embedded within it. It is a family Reunion who dunit that feels a lot like clue. Except the murder didn't happen with a candlestick in the billiard room...

The Inheritance by Trisha Sakhlecha masterfully weaves a well-developed plot that explores complex family dynamics, blending multiple storylines into a seamless narrative. Fans of locked-room mysteries and family drama will find much to love in this compelling thriller, which takes place on the private island of Kilbryde, off the coast of Scotland.

The Agarwal family gathers for a reunion to celebrate their parents’ fortieth anniversary, their father’s retirement, and the succession plan for his billion-dollar Delhi-based company. However, the festivities take a dark turn when murder disrupts their plans, unraveling long-held secrets and hidden betrayals.

Sakhlecha peppers the narrative with clever red herrings and intriguing diversions, keeping readers guessing as they follow the characters down different paths to uncover the truth. The dual timeline, alternating between “before” and “now,” adds depth without slowing the brisk pace of the story.

With a shocking twist at the end, The Inheritance is a brilliantly crafted thriller that will keep readers riveted until the final page. If you enjoy atmospheric mysteries and pyschological thrillers with sharp family drama and unexpected turns, look no further than this engrossing novel.

“My therapist says we all play roles within our families. And once you become accustomed to playing a specific role, you find ways to repeat the same patterns into adulthood.”

Family first, right? RIGHT?? That’s the basic premise of this book. What a ride this was! Family dynamics always fascinate me and this one had so many moving parts that all managed to come together beautifully by the end. This family is so very, very flawed. But aren’t all families to an extent?

The audiobook, read by three narrators, is so good! I always love when audiobooks have multiple narrators when there is a large cast of characters. It really helps to individualize them and follow the story more seamlessly. And the accents are *chefs kiss*.

Thanks for the free audiobook @PRHAudio #PRHAudioPartner and to Netgalley, Pamela Doorman Books, and the author for the ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts.

I thought that the remote island setting for this story was really atmospheric and done well, it did a good job of drawing me into the story and setting the tone for the narrative. I love a good remote island setting, too, I feel like it is such a compelling element. I think that this story is good but doesn't hit its stride until like 20% of the way in once all the characters are easier to parse through. I also felt like the writing style was interesting, but ultimately the plot itself wasn't super interesting in the sense that it felt like not too much happened. A lot of characters combined with the slight lack of a compelling plot made this an okay read for me. The idea and the setting were great, and the writing style was good, but it wasn't enough to overcome the plot and confusing start with the plethora of characters.

Thank you to NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Viking | Pamela Dorman Books for this arc in exchange or an honest review.

The Inheritance is a very well written thriller. The author does a fantastic job of describing the scene and making you feel like you are there. The setting is a remote island that is very eerie and creepy. The family comes together for a reunion only to have a murder cause chaos among the family. Who goes down for the murder??

The multiple characters for me were hard to follow at first but once I got them down I had no problems. I enjoyed the pace and was really invested. I read this book while at work so that is what took me so long to read it but I could of easily finished it faster. Definitely recommend this book.

The Inheritance by Trisha Sakhlecha is a compelling story that is full of intrigue and mystery.
This author really does have the most marvellous writing style and really makes the reader feel fully immersed in not only the story but the characters lives throughout.

This was extremely disappointing- the cover and jacket copy had this as a top anticipated read but honestly there’s an idea in somewhere that could have been good but the execution was boring. Nothing really happens until the end and it’s not worth reading the book for the payoff.

I tried to get into this one, but it just isn't working. There are too many characters for me to keep up with and most of them are just frustrating to read about. I was hoping for this one to be good because I've seen great reviews from others about it which made me keep going as far as I did, but I just don't want to push through any more for something that I'm not enjoying.
