I read this through twice and had a harder time getting in to the story than I thought.
Overall, it's a good story, however it feels like the whole story was all rather rushed.
If there was a prequel and we had some back story on the 4 boys she runs in to , that may have helped a bit.
They all seem to feel like you jumped in the middle of a story and were reading it at 2x speed.
the artwork was fantastic and very cosplay-able for fans of the story.
It somewhat feels like we were missing chunks of the story that would have made it more cohesive.
I received an advanced copy of this book through netgalley for my honest review.
This was an interesting read and I'm curious to know how it will unfold. I liked the artwork. Wondering how things will continue in this story. I think it has potential to be a good read.
I really liked the spin of magical girls into magical guys in this book. The illustration and coloring was beautiful! I need more from the story, it seemed really short, just as things began to happen the story was over. There were a lot of diverse characters, loved that. The action was was great, this is just a very entertaining read. I want the next volume now!
Let me start by saying that the core idea of this graphic novel is absolutely brilliant. All that damn wasted potential.
Everything is too rushed, pace included. There barely is any characterization. The writing could be improved, the jokes toned down, the pace was off. I was really really disappointed because my expectations were really really high - I mean the idea of magical guys!! I love me some magical girls and I was really looking forward to this graphic novel.
This book was a breath of fresh air! Funny, well written, incredibly illustrated, and with a captivating story, this graphic novel’s first volume was a breeze to read. With a flair and comedic style reminiscent of graphic novels such as Bone, Jackie and the Magical Guys takes a several well known and loved tropes, flips them on their heads, and blends them together nearly seamlessly. Overall, an incredible and refreshing read, and well worth the support of a kickstarter born story!
First I want to thank NetGalley, The Author and the Publisher for this ARC.
This was just the funniest!!! 😂
It is a kind of dystopian/time-travel/genderswap fantasy!?
The sarcasm, the witty remarks, the banter, the happy go lucky feels with a lot of DREATH in the background is just perfect.
I read it in one sitting and can't wait for the next volume!
How great is that premise? A refreshing and unique spin on the "magical girl" genre, Jackie and the Magical Guys: Vol. 1 sets up an intriguing mystery on top of the fun premise. The artwork works perfectly for the tone and the story quickly hits the ground running. The weak point is very much the dialogue, which consists almost entirely of quips. Everyone sounds like they're part of an amateur improv group all trying to outshine one another. Granted, some of the jokes are very funny, but they often get drowned in silly puns that aren't nearly as clever as they seem to believe. Even if they were all funny, no joke is really given the appropriate room to breath. But, even the dialogue isn't enough to outright ruin the book. The premise, art, and story are all strong enough that I still plan to check out volume two, but if the dialogue doesn't improve, I probably won't be around for a volume three.
This is HORRIBLE. There are so many terrible puns, the plot set up is just... stupid. "You know what's odd?" "Numbers that aren't divisible by two." Stuff like that is just what this entire comic is, nonstop. Yuck.
To save the future, Jackie travels into the past - our present - and inducts four unsuspecting high school boys into her super soldier army, accidentally turning them into magical guys. Teambuilding has never been so cringe.
I like how this graphic novel turns some of the classic tropes on their head. The art was vibrant. I look forward to the next volume.
This was.... an interesting book. It had some funny moments between the characters, but it all seemed very frenetic and a little forced. I picked it up because of the premise, but there wasn't enough in this book to make me want to continue reading the series.

Jackie and the Magical Guys by Amy Linsamouth sounded like a pretty funny premise for a graphic novel. It's about a girl who has to go into the past to save the world by turning four guys into magical girls. Silly and fun, yeah? Unfortunately, I could only get about halfway through before I gave up on it. The art was lackluster and clunky, and the writing was almost all very inane puns and very little explanation for the story. It was a cringe-fest for me and not worth my time. It may be that there is an audience for this out there, but sadly I was not it.
The premise of the story is interesting and I like the concept and characters a lot. The art is also nice and the character design is awesome. The only critic I have is that the interactions between characters feels a bit stilted and not very natural.

💘 Comedy / Fantasy
📚 Ongoing
📺 No anime, but a full-color comic 👀
The concept for this comic really pulled me in! I loved the art style; it was absolutely stunning, and the characters were fantastic.
There’s a sassy sports guy, an awkward nerd, a strong female lead—need I go on??
I went into this expecting it to be semi-Shonen with a feminist kick. What I got was a strong female lead, four male supporting characters, and 108 dad jokes. Okay, maybe a slight exaggeration, but I could count on a new dad joke or pun every time I turned the page.
Jackie is sent back in time to prevent something terrible, but in order to do so, she has to find the right people to help her. She turns four guys into magical girls (hence the title), and let’s just say, they are not happy about it.
Will I read Volume 2? Yeah, for sure. I’ll also be recommending this to all my friends whose favorite ride at WDW is Jungle Cruise.
Thanks to #netgalley for the chance to read #JackieAndTheMagicalGuys for free.
A cute and fun take on the magical girl genre! It was a fun read, and I am interested to see where it goes!
Weirdly fun. I'm excited to read the next installment. The artwork is excellent and the story is pretty unique.
What a fun adventure. I really enjoyed this one, can't wait for the next volume.
I think the idea is a fun concept, and the "I'm here to make magical girls but all I've got are these guys" was pretty fun. I also appreciate that "man in dress" was not the center of the joke. The characters, both personality and design, were interesting, and I can't wait to learn more about them as the story continues.
Jackie and the Magical Guys is a fun spin on the magical girl genre, but instead of girls, it is gender bent with men being the magical beings. Jackie is from the future and has the incredible responsibility of recruiting magical warriors to save the planet from aliens invading earth. Using a super soldier serum, Jackie turns unwitting young men into magical "girls".
This graphic novel was action packed, but there didn't leave much room for character development. Each character has a brief introductory page and then they are thrown into the action. The graphic novel is also half the length of a Japanese manga, at only 120 pages. This leaves very little room for anything to happen in terms of plot.
The art does not match the cover in terms of quality, which was a disappointment and the humor in the novel seemed rather juvenile. I also didn't understand the motivations of the characters and why the would willingly trust a stranger and take the serum.
All in all, I loved the idea but the execution wasn't there, and it didn't feel long enough to be a full graphic novel. I have high hopes for this author though and will anticipate future releases.
Jackie is sent back from the future to prevent an end-of-the-world creature. Jackie needs a little help. Enter Our 4 Magical Girls/Guys. This is a good reminder to always ask questions before just jabbing yourself with an unknown injection. It leads to some laugh-out-loud moments and some cringe-worthy dialogue. This is a fun take on a Magical Girl story. It's a fast read that ends in a cliffhanger. I will be reading more.
Thank you to NetGalley for a free copy with an honest review.
This was really bad. The art, dialogue, pacing, and plot were poorly done. Multiple bad puns on every page were unfunny and distracting, and not much even happened. Only one character of the promised "Magical Guys" even transformed.
I wasn’t sure about this book, but I ended up loving it. I have already recommended it to several coworkers as well as made certain we would be getting it into our store. I am very much looking forward to the next volume.
