I loved the idea of this, but not so in love with the words chosen. Quite a few complex words that wouldn’t be understood by young children. Very colorful though!
I liked this but I feel like it assumes the reader will understand every reference and it doesn't really work, some sort of image for the references would have been good. I like how colourful the illustrations are and it's easy to follow the book. I do think maybe this isn't great for first words but would be good for kids who are avid readers
The book was very colorful, but I feel like many worlds are totally not fit to be "first words" and I found them quite complicated for a toddler (for example juxtaposition) or there were examples of expressions and that can't really count as words
This is cute and the illustrations are super fun and well done. I don't think all parents will know what they all are though. But it could be a fun learning experience for families.
I am not sure it should be considered "first words" because a lot of the words are complex. But it will be cute for families to share with their little ones.
Thanks NetGalley for this ARC.
As a bookworm, I loved the premise of this book. Upon first glance the illustrations were bright and attractive to little ones. However, I feel like many of the words chosen for this book are going to go over the children's (and likely the parents) heads. For being a book of "first words" I think that examples of and from children's literature would have have been more appropriate. This book was a great idea, I just didn't love the execution for such young readers.
I have some problems with this book. Two, to be exact. However, I'll start with the one thing I enjoyed. The pictures were done really well. They were very colorful, crisp, and detailed. This is perfect for a first words book for little ones because it helps to solidify the meanings of words in their brains.
Now for what didn't work for me.
This is a small thing, but I still think that it's worth noting. A handful of the "words" mentioned in the book weren't words at all, they were phrases. I don't think this is great for young readers to see because it's almost misleading in a way. Just something I would be cautious about in a book that is intended to teach.
Lastly, I don't think that these should be considered first words. None of them should be, except for a few. I don't know if this was the author's intention, but it seemed odd to me. Lots and lots of young readers reading this book will not get any of the references, especially not until later in life when they potentially read classic books. This book is more meaningful for the parents, and that defeats the purpose of the book.
I own 100 first words for little Geeks and have enjoyed reading it to my daughter. As a bookworm, I was curious what this entry into the series would be like. The references are just as fun as the Geeks version. However, because books are even broader than Geekdom, I felt it was harder to connect and identify every reference. It's definitely geared mostly towards classics, with some genre. I suggest this fun series to connect with your child through your passions.
Thank you, Familius, for an ARC.
This book was colorful and eye catching. I am struggling to figure out the target age because thought it is designated as a "first-words" book the words are quite complicated. It seems like words for more sophisticated readers. I enjoyed the words but sometimes didn't know what they were referencing from books so I think a key would help so that parents could use this to introduce kids to different stories.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Loved the bright colors and range of book references. As others have mentioned, having a key for what each image is portraying or referencing would be great for the parents!
My little (and me as the mom) has loved other books in this series, so I was excited to get a sneak peek at this latest version. The words in this one are very smartly done. If you're familiar with the books, you as the adult will likely "get" so much of this. I do almost wish there was a key as there were a few words that I couldn't quite place the connection. But still, this was a great one to teach the words that make up the plots, characters, and component parts of books.
From a library collection perspective, this is a difficult volume to place. While the bright colors, fantastic images, and detailed pages make this a board book that any young child might enjoy, even a well-read care giver might be stumped by some of the words and concepts selected for inclusion. The depth and breadth of the literature referenced is sure to appeal to the puzzle solver in any adult bibliophile, but at the same time it limits the appeal for young readers as a board book reading caregiver may not have a ready answer for "what is a droog?' or "why is the Fireman burning books?"
This volume might do best on the adult shelves where it would match brilliantly with something like I Will Judge You by Your Bookshelf by Grant Snider, or as the foundation of a reading challenge for young adult or new adult patrons. While an absolute delight of a book, it will require careful placement or programming in order to circulate well and should be purchased with that in mind! Thank you to NetGalley for access to this amusing arc.
The book delivers 100 words for little and very precocious bookworms. First words? I doubt it. But, for experienced readers, yes. Fun little book, but for the very well informed bookworm!
This was a short, fun, and cute book with some vocabulary around bookish terms. I think this would be a great beginning resource in sparking a larger conversation about books with young readers. Very fun!
Thank you so much to the publisher and to NetGalley for the e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
There are so many things/pictures to look at, and so many words! Such a cute book with a lot of pretty colors and illustrations.
I appreciate the publisher and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
So sweet!! We love these first 100 words books and this one didn't disappoint. The pictures are engaging and my toddler loved looking at each page. I can't wait to add a physical copy to our bookshelf.
