Never Fall for a Dragon
Mate Mountain #1
Lola Glass
Never Fall for a Dragon is the first book in a spicy new series.
This book got some pretty bad reviews, but I can’t figure out why. It is a fast read and a hot read. I do not like books about demons and there was a demon in the book, but I like dragons. I enjoyed this book. This is the kind of book you read when you need to be distracted, you don’t want anything serious, and you want something hot.
Elodie sees a man and woman in what she believes is an argument. She rushes to the woman’s aid only to discover things were not as it appeared. It was too late though; she had already touched the dragon and so began the heat. The Dragon Shifter, August. Explained what happens when a female touches a male Dragon Shifter. She immediately goes in heat. It is very painful for the next 4 weeks she will be in agony unless he is touching her. If they give in to their desire, they will be mated/sealed for life. August along with the help of some friends, take Elodie to a house where they will stay for the next 4 weeks. The house is unfurnished, so August has furniture delivered. He also has food delivered.
Elodie and August have some very hot scenes as they attempt to resist having sex. They do everything but…it’s a matter of opinion I suppose. They actually get to know each other, and they like each other. What will happen at the end of the 4 weeks.
I like it. The book was a fun read.
Thank you NetGalley for providing a review copy.

This was a cute paranormal romance. The female main character intervenes in a fight between a man a woman. She doesn’t realize it isn’t a fight and it was just a brother and sister talking. The man is actually a dragon shifter and his heat is initiated when he smells the female main character. She has to go stay in his cabin with him until heat is over but they can’t finish the mating. There is steam and pining. The male hasn’t been around human women much and is a virgin. This is cute but there really isn’t a lot of plot. Not a lot of character growth either. I found myself wanting more and just getting bored with a lot of it.

"Never Fall for a Dragon" by Lola Glass is an exhilarating read that plunges you into action from the very first page. There's no lengthy introduction or unnecessary filler; instead, the story grabs your attention immediately, making it impossible to put down.

The chemistry between Elody and Augustus is electric, and their dynamic is one of the highlights of the book. From the very beginning, the sexual tension between them is off the charts, creating a captivating push-and-pull that keeps you invested in their story.

I especially loved the last 25% of the book. The resolution was satisfying and tied up the story beautifully. The romance and passion culminate in some great smut scenes that are sure to please fans of the genre.

This novel is short, light, and full of fun, making it a perfect escape for anyone looking for an entertaining and steamy read. The audiobook version is also fantastic, bringing the characters and their world to life in an engaging way.

Overall, "Never Fall for a Dragon" is a delightful adventure filled with romance, humor, and just the right amount of heat. If you’re looking for a quick and enjoyable read with strong characters and sizzling chemistry, this book is definitely worth picking up!

The audiobook itself is fine, it’s mixed well and the narrators do a great job with what they’re given…

However, this book was 100% not for me. The main characters are destined to be mates and as the storyline progresses their desire to become bonded increases their need for intimacy with each other. But instead of bonding, they spend the entire book trying NOT to seal the deal. So basically, this book is written in the tone as if it’s a fun smutty read, but doesn’t actually deliver a fun smutty read. I found myself cringing and eye rolling at several parts in the book. Honestly, if it wasn’t for it being an audiobook, I would have DNF’ed.

If there is a 2nd book, I might give it a shot. I feel like the premise for this first book wasn’t really for me, but book 2 might be different…

This is a spicy and sweet story, all in one. Think omegaverse but dragon shifters.

I haven’t read a ton of dragon shifter romances before and I really loved their take on the mating bond and “heat”. It was a great take on a shifter romance.

I loved the dynamic between the main characters—when they weren’t spicing things up, they were bonding and falling in love and I loved it so much. I particularly loved the scenes of the two main characters flying (IYKYK).

This is a quick audiobook and the narrators are really good as well.

I love anything that has dragon shifters in it. While this was extremely spicy and interesting, it was also different, but not necessarily in a bad way. I'd never read/listened to a dragon shifter book soley based around the mating bond. I did enjoy the book and the angst between the MCs and the narrators did a great job of bringing the book to life. It wasn't my favorite shifter book but still an enjoyable one.

Thank you to NetGalley, Dreamscape Media, and Lola Glass for an ARC of this audiobook narrated by Renee Thorn and Nick Mondelli in exchange for my honest review.

I requested this audiobook because what’s not to love about a possessive dragon shifter, forced proximity, and lots of spice?!

Unfortunately, this fell a little flat for me and I think it may be because I’m missing some backstory. While this is the first book in a duology, it appears there are earlier books that may need to be read first for context. I’m not sure I understand the prison plot point either because I was still confused by it by the end of the book. The spice was well written and I loved the banter between Elodie and August.

Lastly, I enjoyed the narrators for this book, however there was a period in the last 2-3 hours of the audiobook where Renee seemed to take most of the sentences into an upwards cadence so it sounded like she was asking questions when the sentences were statements. It’s a small detail I noticed, and maybe that’s just how it sounded to me, but once I heard it, it did make it a little difficult to focus on the story.

Overall, this was a fun short read that’s perfect if you’re looking for a quick and spicy read.

this book is just okay. the craft is fine. the character's are there. it's pretty simple in make-up. my only complaints are that: (1) there is more telling than showing, (2) i hated the nicknames (fireball and auggie), (3) there's pretty much zero buildup or chemistry between the leads, imo, and (4) i was so bored the whole time. otherwise, whether or not a reader likes this will probably come down to preference. the narrators were pretty good, though.

Never Fall for a Dragon is a spicy story about what happens when you ignite a dragon shifter’s mating heat cycle. This is one of those books where you you’re invested for the spice and not the plot which is good since it’s pretty plot light. Overall the story is fairly short as well making it a quick, easy read. I struggled with the insta love/lust. While I get that’s the point of the mating cycle, it lost a little bit when they met right at the beginning and started the whole process. The FMC and MMC certainly had chemistry but I missed the banter that I crave between love interests. There isn’t a whole lot in the way or world building either, which I hope changes in the future. I read this via audiobook, which for me was good, because I really enjoyed the narration. Listening to Renee Thorn and Nick Mondelli is a big reason why I was able to finish the story as they did well at selling the characters’ chemistry. Overall, if the synopsis interests you, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with this book.

If you like a quick dragon shifter romance this is the book for you. I think I would’ve enjoyed it more if I read the book instead of listening to the audio, the male narrator was fine, but I wasn’t feeling the female narrator(although changing to 2x speed helped). Aside from that the beginning felt rushed. The story ended up being ok and a decent romance, but I can’t say I would read any more from the series.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this shifter romance. I loved that August was a dragon shifter and was so tender and protective. This was a short, sweet and spicy romance. The supernatural elements were great additions to the story and who doesn’t love a little supernatural romance? 😊

Never Fall for a Dragon by Lola Glass

This is a great steamy romance that totally delivers on cozy romance, spice, and a line up of fun characters that make me want to keep reading the series!

✨Story:
Basically this is a forced proximity trope in a cozy cabin. A human woman triggers the mating heat for a hot dragon shifter and they have to spend a few weeks together NOT sealing the deal so they don’t end up as mates. They can’t end up as mates because the shifter has been sentenced to supernatural prison and if he has a mate, the mate will be imprisoned with him.

✨Romance:
Sweet and fun. This is no slow burn, we jump straight into instant lust (because of the mating heat). But the characters are friends first and support each other. It’s very sweet. No pages upon pages of graphic details. While there wasn’t exactly a third act “break up,” it was more of a third act misunderstanding trope - which is not my favorite.

✨Characters
I really liked all of the characters and thought this was even better than the dragon shifter books by Ruby Dixon! The secondary characters were particularly interesting - the dragon shifter’s brothers, the MC’s loyal human friends, and other supernatural beings. I definitely want to see more of them.

✨World Building
I’m curious about the world but there’s not a lot of development in that department (because the main characters are stuck in a cabin for most of the book). But it was intriguing and made me want to keep reading the next books which is great✔️

✨Audio Narration
The audio narrators do an excellent job reading this. I particularly loved Renee Thorn’s voice, it was relatable and likable.

📚 MY REVIEW 📚
Romantic, loving, and spicy shifter romance without being weird or overdone. Highly enjoyable and perfect for my swooning, slow burning, fantasy romance soul.

I normally find these types of fast-burn shifter romances to be straight smut and minimal romance and almost zero plot - BUT HEAR ME OUT. This was a fast-paced story, with spice happening early on, but the romance and love were slow burning. The MMC was caring, tender, patient, loving, nurting, and put his mate first. The FMC was also attentive, caring, empathetic, and willing to learn and understand what her mate was going through. VERY ROMANCE BASED.

The plot was PLOTTING. I really enjoyed this plot line and would LOVE to live in this world a little longer with the MMC's brothers and their stories. The plot had me stressed from the FIRST chapter.

The spice was normal intimacy level, but the angst, tension, suspense, and yearning were high and had me craving each scene without it being repetitive. NOT repetitive at all - kept my interest (some smut just has me glazing over it after a while, but not this).

The audio - the female narrator had some very minor techniques that I didn't prefer, but it wasn't enough to deter me. I got through the first chapter and was not bothered or distracted at all. She also did a great job with other character's dialogue. The male narrator did an excellent job with his own narration style and also with other character's dialogue. I would have preferred a duet-style narration for this book to feel more intimacy between the MMC and FMC, but again, the chosen style wasn't bad for me, as I clearly still enjoyed it.

Voice Actors: Nick Mondelli & Renee Thorn

🖤 MY MINI BLURB 🖤
Elody and August found themselves suddenly and unexpectedly thrust into a very heated situation that neither of them wanted - the start of a fated mates dragon bonding ritual.

However, we very quickly learn that our broody MMC dragon shifter, August, is highly compassionate and loyal so he fights his own needs and desires to keep his potential mate, Elody, safe from the duty he must fulfil.

This is an urban fantasy shifter romance with spice and plot.

❤️ MY RECOMMENDATIONS ❤️
I have already been recommending the book and the audiobook to my friends.

I recommend this book to people who enjoy deep love and affectionate based romance with spice, as well as any fantasy, paranormal, or shifter reader.

This is a great choice for someone wanting to enter into the shifter romance genre.

I will be keeping my eyes peeled for the next audiobooks in this series!

Thanks, NetGalley, for this audiobook 😘

I felt like I was reading the cliff notes version of an erotica novel. Had this been a novella that took place in addition to another more complex story, Im positive I would have enjoyed it much more. The world building was practically nonexistent and I didn’t feel that the chemistry between the characters, while being quite convincing in itself, made up for plot holes that were present. When I first started reading, I immediately felt like I had accidentally skipped the first several chapters as I was quite literally dropped into the world. Conversations and actions progressed with no true context of the surrounding politics or social dynamic beyond there being humans and shifters. There was no true tension built up between the characters and the “prison” was mentioned as if the gravity and danger of such a place had previously been described in great detail. The ending made little sense to me, as I still don’t understand how an information exchange was enough to free August from his sentence. If that had been an option, why was it not presented from the very beginning. Also, if he was so loyal to the other dragons, as it was stated several times that he was, wouldn’t he have already divulged the information after being asked about it before his incarceration? I was also very confused about Elodys illness and exhaustion at the end. So much detail went into describing how her mannerisms weren’t natural, but then everything fizzled out and nothing had changed. In all aspects of this story, I was left wanting more. I really wanted to enjoy this one, and think that if this were taken as an extensive outline, rather than a full novel, it has the potential to go the distance. I listened to the audio narrated by Renee Thorn and Nick Mondelli, and I will say that I think they both did an amazing job. Thank you so much NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the ARC!

4.25 ⭐️

I've heard of Lola Glass before but have never read before. DEFINITELY picking up more by her now, this was such a fun, short read. I listened to the audiobook and narration is a 5 ⭐️. I love the dual narrators, but I wish the male narrator was able to do more chapters his voice was 10/10 fun and dreamy. Female narrator was good, but the voices were slightly inconsistent. The audio narration done by Nick Mondelli and Renee Thorn.

I loved a good forced proximity shifter romance as a palette cleaner between heavier reads. Is it a bit cheesy? Yes. But it is spicy and such a fun, sweet romance. The sexual tension is truly the main plot but I loved the relationship growing between the FMC and MMC. Lovely HEA that wraps up very nicely.

🔥 Dual POV
🔥 Possessive MMC
🔥 High spice, low plot
🔥 Mating Bonds
🔥 Dragon Shifters
🔥 MMC a quick learner

Thank you to NetGalley & Dreamscape Media for the ALC of Never Fall for a Dragon by Lola Glass.

✨book #1 in an interconnected standalone series

Big thanks to NetGalley for this ALC in exchange for an honest review!

This was a quick, fun paranormal romance! It was instalovey in the way that all fated mate romances tend to be, but I really enjoyed their dynamic. Let’s be honest though, there really isn’t much of a plot going on here…but there was just enough world building/angst to keep you engaged. This is the perfect type of palate cleanser book between heavier reads.

I really enjoyed the audiobook though! Not sure if I’ll continue on in the series, but would definitely continue listening to the audiobooks if I do.

At the end of the book description, there is a claimed 'Happy Ending' <---<--- THIS is what made me request this book!!

The main characters are Elody and August, August is a dragon and Elody is human. The book starts out with conflict and quickly escalates, which almost deterred me from continuing, but it gets better! The main trope is forced proximity, one of my favorites. Overall, this book is mostly smut, besides lust you can say the main characters don't know northing about each other. You can tell the author TRIED to give the feeling of them falling in love, but it is overshadowed by the sex scenes. Their love is purely physical and a tad but emotional. The ✨️plot✨️ is there and I couldn't put this book down! It is well written!!
It does include one of my least favorite tropes though, and that is the famous 'girl can't live without the boy' trope. Elody suffers when August leaves and kinda forgets how to live. I hate these tropes, because they fantasize toxic codependency. It's made bearable by Elody's friends and their group dynamic.

The book is narrated by Renee Thorn and Nick Mondelli. These both did an amazing job at narrating! I was laughing so hard at Renee Thorn's male character voice, and even HARDER at Nick Mondelli's female character voice 😂😂
