I loved the pacing of this book. I was deeply emotionally involved with Jersey's struggle to come to terms with how the tornado ripped away everything that she thought she knew about herself, her mother, her father, and the rest of her family. A beautiful exploration of navigating PTSD by a young girl on the brink of adulthood.
I really enjoyed this book, and the characters. It's not often you find a book with non-flat characters, and the gripping quality of this story. I've read a lot of books in this catagory, but I kept thinking about this one. I will be following the author now to see what else she's written.
I do not normally gravitate towards realistic fiction, or even contemporary fiction. I was drawn towards the cover, stayed for the premise, and enjoyed the story.
Torn Away by Jennifer Brown we follow the life of Jersey. What's fascinating about this story is that a tornado is a supporting character. I don't know about you, but I loved Twister. But what Brown has done with Torn Away is tell a heart-breaking and compelling story about finding yourself amidst destruction. It's sad and emotional, and Brown allowed me to feel those feelings through Jersey.
There's something to be said about Jersey's character. There is a strength to her, as vulnerable as she is, but I admire her. Given her age, this time, there is something to be said for a young heroine to find something positive in the middle of all of the sadness.
I'm sorry it has taken so long to review this title. I absolutely loved it and appreciate being able to have the opportunity to read it. Thank you.
Jennifer Brown novels are always heartfelt and moving and this one was no different. Absolutely loved it!
This will go live on my blog on Saturday, July 1. Kellyvision.wordpress.com
When a tornado hits her small town, Jersey loses everything. Her house is destroyed, all her stuff is gone, her mom and sister are dead and her stepfather sends her to live with her grandparents (whom she has literally never met).
This was written after the tornado that destroyed the town of Joplin. I've seen the pictures and heard interviews from the residents who survived, but I live in a place that doesn't get tornadoes and so it was hard to really imagine it. On that level, this book is terrifying.
It's also realistic. Grieving doesn't always make us better people, those who let go of small things and realize how precious life is. Jersey is devastated but she is also furious at basically everyone. She lashes out and honestly, I understand most of it. #TeamJersey
Jennifer Brown writes these amazing novels, ones where the reader becomes fully immersed in the characters' lives. Jersey's life isn't a great place to be but I love her anyway.
Recommended.
This is an excellent book that I think everyone should read. The emotions are real and raw and I truly felt for Jersey. Be prepared to cry and have your heart ripped out with this one!
NFINITE STARS!!!
I have not read a good book as this one since I'll give you the sun, which is my favorite book ever.
It's the second most realistic book about loosing people who you care I have ever read. I cried so much in this book, because it is real theme. Sometimes, you do not realize that you treated people badly until they are gone. You need to love people everyday and show this love. You never when you will see that person again, perhaps never.
I think this book is more incredible, because I do not like to read books without romance, but THIS ONE - HELL YEAH - It is more than worth it
I RECOMMEND IT WITH ALL MY HEART
