This is a great crime series and this one is one of my favourites.
Katie and Cisco discover a young child shivering in the woods while out for a morning run. When she reports it and the team come out, they find the rest of the girl’s family brutally murdered in their home.
The little girl is placed under Police guard in hospital as it appears the family were part of witness protection.
Another family is soon targeted and Katie and McGaven have their hands full trying to find the killer.
Due to the link with witness protection, a Marshall is sent to work with them, and it takes a while to get used to him.
Katie is also dealing with her own personal problems but tries to focus on the case.
This is a great crime thriller with a few twists and turns to keep you on your toes.
I love the relationship between Katie and her specially trained dog Cisco, and he plays a crucial role in this book.
I’d highly recommend this series if you’ve not read it yet.
Thanks to Bookouture for the opportunity to read this book.

4.5⭐

Detective Katie Scott and her K9 sidekick Cisco are back in a puzzler of a story. That sees Katie and Cisco stumble across a young girl. When out running one morning. A young girl called Emily who is terrified and tells her that her mum abandoned her and so Katie goes off to find her.

But what she finds is a crime scene that Katie and her colleagues will never forget.

As Emilys entire family has been slaughtered and as the investigation gets underway Katie and her partner Gav learn the family were in witness protection. So the Sheriff who also happens to be Katie's uncle tells them to work the scene and quickly before the marshals turn up and take over.

However, just hours later another family is found murdered in similar circumstances and this time, a young girl, the same age as Emily is kidnapped and Katie and Gav know they are in a race against time.

But something isn't adding up and the murders seem to be more about the children than they do about the children than they do their parents.

And as the investigation unfolds more unanswered questions arise. As do the bodies and Katie and Gav know they are running out of time.

But someone seems to be messing with the case or maybe Katie just isn't thinking straight. As her personal life is once again in turmoil and her friends are worried.

And with plenty of twists and turns. This was a gripping read. That I found hard to put down but I did work out part of the story pretty early on. Yet, saying that I still really enjoyed the journey and felt chuffed that for once I figured something out. 😂

Detective Katie Scott never gives up! I loved this investigation! I don’t know what it is about this series, but to me, it is the perfect detective series…exactly what I look for! Despite being in personal turmoil, in this book, Katie is determined to find the killer of two families and will stop at nothing to get the bad guy!

Don't worry if you, like me, haven't read the earlier books in this series- this is a well constructed mystery with good characters in Detective Katie Scott and Sean Mcgaven (and Cisco the dog). The last thing Katie expected was to find a small girl and then two murdered families. Now they're on an urgent hunt to find not only the killer but also another child. It's got some twists and will keep you guessing. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC. I'll look for Chase again.

Count Their Graves is book 12 in the Detective Katie Scott series by Jennifer Chase. This series is one of the best I've ever read and this book is another fantastic entry to the series. Count Their Graves finds Detective Scott out on her morning run with her service dog, Cisco. She decides to take a different trail this morning and Cisco alerts Katie that something is wrong. Cisco leads Katie to a section of woods where they find a young girl about 6 years old. The girl is only wearing a white nightgown and it's quite cold out. She picks the girl up as she is sobbing and alone. As Katie and Cisco follow the trail they come to a large farmhouse. When Katie goes towards the house she finds a truly horrific scene. In the barn, 5 family members wearing matching pajamas, are lying dead next to each other. They have all been brutally murdered with some sort of knife and then been staged in the barn. Who would kill and entire family? What did these people do to upset someone so much? The little girl found in the woods was the youngest in the family. Her name is Emily and she tells Katie that her mom put her in the woods to protect her. How did her mom end up dead then? Why didn't she call for help? So many questions and so few answers!

When Katie calls it in, the team arrives soon after. The house has been totally wiped and is so clean there is no evidence left at all. The team discovers that this family, the Banks, were in witness protection. They had been moved here. Was that why they were killed? As Katie, Gav, and her team are finishing up at the Banks house, they are notified of a similar scene across town. This family has been killed in their beds. Why is someone going around killing entire families? This is particularly evil and a true monster is on the loose. Katie and her team are overwhelmed with the amount of dead bodies to process and evidence to search for. Both homes that the murders took place have no close neighbors. No one saw or heard anything!

This is going to be one of the most difficult cases Katie has ever worked. Will Katie and the team be able to catch the killer before they kill another family? When someone gets too close to Katie for comfort things really ramp up! Is Katie in danger? Who could get so close to her? This book will keep you guessing and on edge throughout. If you've never read a book in the series, don't hesitate to read this one as a standalone. It's got lots of twists that you won't see coming! I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of Count Their Graves in exchange for a fair review. I absolutely loved Count Their Graves and rate it 5 stars! I look forward to the next book in the series and hope Jennifer Chase is writing! Count Their Graves comes out on August 30 and should not be missed! #CountTheirGraves

So much going on😕

3.5🌟 stars
Count Their Graves had a catchy title and plenty of suspense. The plight of the families and children targeted for abduction and cold-blooded murder drew me into the story and, at least for some, all of the police investigative team work paid off. And Cisco, Katie's former military dog who now assists on cold cases, was a great support character.

But, for me, there was a bit too much going on in this story. It did not have the page-turning urgency I love in a murder mystery, possibly because there were so many things going on that frequently the next chapter tended to take off on another tangent and the suspense had to rebuild. And, after a while, the body count made it difficult to keep track of all the victims and shady characters. Plus, I suspected the principal bad guy from the get-go; I like less predictability.

Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Count Their Graves’, book 12 in the Detective Katie Scott series written by Jennifer Chase, in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

Detective Katie Scott is out on an early morning run when her K9 Cisco comes across a four-year-old girl called Emily. Katie approaches the house nearby and finds the remaining four members of the family dead and neatly lined up next to each other on the barn floor. As Katie is already at the house, she and McGaven are asked to continue with the investigation and that US Marshall Kyle West will be joining them as top-secret information has been uncovered about the family. As the body count grows it becomes even more important to catch the killer but it feels as if Katie if being profiled and her every move predicted.

‘Count Their Graves’ is another action-packed thriller from the Pine Valley Police Department with Katie and her loyal and hardworking deputy McGaven investigating what looks to be their toughest case yet. I’ve been a fan of this series from book one and after reading this latest one I can honestly say this series is getting better and better. It has so much suspense and nail-biting twists and turns that I haven’t been able to stop reading and I’ve dropped everything so I could follow Katie and McGaven’s every step. It’s had me gripped from the very first page as Katie searches for clues and risks her life while having to put aside her personal problems with Chad. It’s been a fantastic book that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading and can’t praise it enough.

This is a book from one of my must read series. I think it could be read as a standalone book since each book deals with a different case. The actual murderer was hard to guess until it was revealed, The characters are well written and make you feel for them (a few tears in my eyes at one stage). Admittedly, after 12 books I'm probably invested in the lives of the main characters. Starting with finding a little girl, the plot raced along so I found I'd finished it instead of just reading a few chapters like I had planned. I can't wait for the next book

"Count Their Graves" by Jennifer Chase is a riveting entry in the Detective Katie Scott series, offering a chilling narrative that hooks you from the first page. As my introduction to Chase's work, I found the plot compelling and well-paced, with Katie Scott emerging as a strong and relatable protagonist. The gruesome discovery of the Banks family sets the tone for a gripping investigation, filled with twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end.

The suspense builds effectively, and the layers of mystery surrounding the witness protection angle add depth to the story. While the book excels in creating tension and a sense of urgency, I did feel that some character motivations could have been explored further to enhance the emotional impact.

Overall, "Count Their Graves" is a solid crime thriller that will appeal to fans of Lisa Regan and Melinda Leigh. It's a page-turner that makes for a thrilling read, though it might leave you craving a bit more insight into the characters' inner worlds. Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to exploring more of Jennifer Chase's work in the future.

Thanks to Ms. Chase, the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my copy of Count Their Graves by Jennifer Chase.
Katie changes her morning route to take Cisco on a run, and they find a small girl curled up in the forest with blood on her clothes.
Katie leaves Cisco to guard the child while she goes down to the farmhouse below.
There she finds the other four members of the family, lined up in the barn cold and still.
What monster could do this ? While reeling from this discovery the call comes in, another family has suffered the same fate.
While reeling from events in her own life Katie must solve the mystery.

I thoroughly enjoyed Count Their Graves. Katie and Cisco are some of my favorite characters. With two murdered families and two missing young girls, Katie, Cisco, and McGaven work to solve the mystery behind the crimes as well as find the missing children. Paired with an upheaval in Katie’s personal life, the job seems almost impossible.

Whenever a new Jennifer Chase book lands in my inbox, I know I'm in trouble... everything else has to go on hold until I've finished and I mean EVERYTHING... sorry kids 😅

We're now onto book #12 of this superb Detective Katie Scott series and I'm still waiting for it to get monotonous... well I can safely say it still hasn't happened!

Detective Katie Scott and her partner Detective Sean McGaven head up the Cold Case Unit. With a perfect record of managing to complete all cold cases that they have investigated so far, Scott and McGaven are a formidable team and are known for it. Working alongside them in many instances is Katie's ex military dog Cisco. Just as recognised and reverend for his talent.

On an early morning run, following a trail that she doesn't take often, Cisco runs off. Assuming he has caught a scent, Katie follows to get him back when she finds him standing next to a young child, a girl, in a bloodied nightdress and freezing cold.

Leaving Cisco protecting the child, Katie follows a path to a farmhouse. What she finds there will haunt her dreams for days to come. Four bodies laid out on the floor, all in matching pyjamas and all dead.

The murdered family are then made known to the team as being in Witness Protection. Because of this a Marshall is sent to help the investigation, to the unease of Scott & McGaven. Used to working together they are not too happy in having to discuss every aspect of 'their' case but begrudgingly accept.

When a second family are found murdered, with the same MO and with another little girl, Emily, now missing, they know they need to move fast. Will they find Emily before another family recieves the same fate?

Right from the very first chapter, I was hooked. The author has this magical way of getting the reader to just 'turn one more page' and before you know it you're 2 hours in and haven't moved a muscle!

This was definitely one of the best in the series. Completely unputdownable, breathtaking and with an amazing ending!

Huge thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC.

I’ve been a HUGE Detective Katie Scott fan from the beginning, and this series just never disappoints! I was reeled in right from the first chapter, and it never let me go! It was suspenseful, action packed, and a great mystery. I’ve loved the character developments and relationships throughout the series, and I really love the partnership Katie and Gav have. And as always, Cisco is the MVP. Can not wait for the next installment and to see what is next for the detectives!

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC in exchange for my honest feedback!

Eerie, intricate, yet fast - paced.

I really enjoyed this,so much so that I found it extremely eerie at times when I was reading late at night in the dark.

The profiling element really sold this for me, it gave that little bit of edge to a police procedural type story.

However, the twist for me and the reveal of who the murderer was, wasn’t shocking to me. It fell quite flat, but as thriller is a genre I road solely, it takes a lot to shock me and be a five star.

If you’re a fan of missing children meets massacres, you’ll enjoy this one.
