The Year of Maybe by D.B. Sayers is an engaging and introspective tale that captures the uncertainty and excitement of early adulthood. The story follows Nyra, a recent college graduate navigating the transition from student life to full independence, a journey that many readers will find relatable. With her new marketing job on the rise, Nyra is starting to see her future taking shape, even if she’s still tethered to the familiar comforts of home.

What sets this novel apart is the introduction of Tai Abrega, a professional surfer whose free-spirited lifestyle is worlds apart from Nyra’s structured, career-focused life. Their connection, sparked by Nyra’s impulsive decision to take up surfing, awakens not just a passion for the sport but also a deep, almost mystical bond with the sea and with Tai himself. The chemistry between Nyra and Tai is palpable, and Sayers does a great job of exploring the tension between Nyra’s desire for stability and her growing attraction to the unpredictable, adventurous life Tai represents.

The novel delves into the complexities of balancing dreams with reality, as Nyra is forced to consider whether she can truly blend her conventional world with Tai’s more liberated approach to life. This internal struggle adds depth to Nyra’s character, making her journey one of self-discovery as much as it is a romantic exploration.

Sayers’ writing is both evocative and reflective, capturing the allure of the ocean and the thrill of new experiences, while also grounding the story in the very real challenges of choosing between safety and risk. The Year of Maybe is an uplifting read that will resonate with anyone who has ever been caught between what is and what could be, offering a hopeful reminder that sometimes, embracing the unknown is the first step toward finding true happiness.

This wasn’t my favorite book ever but at the same time it it was a great story. I didn’t read the previous but I still found it entertaining. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
