Puffin is a little worried about moving to New Stork City. Luckily on his first day of school Puffin is paired up with Penguin, “the cool kid” as a buddy. Penguin is very busy with lots of activities and doesn’t have time for Puffin. Puffin tries hard to fit in but really struggles until he signs up to help on stage crew for the upcoming show. He learns that Penguin is snobby, but just really busy. Puffin ends up saving the show.
This was a fun early graphic novel. I loved the play on words and the puffin facts spread throughout the book. I enjoyed this graphic novel.
A sweet story about the new kid (Puffin) just trying to fit in. The teacher assigns the very busy Penguin to show Puffin the ropes and Puffin struggles to find his place until the lights go out during the big show.
Thank you to Netgalley and Kids Can Press for this advanced reader copy. All views and opinions are my own.
Cute little book about making new friends and learning to assimilate to a new place. This book isn't exactly what I expected. It's not a childrens' book as much as a graphic novel style with panels. Very cute! Good message. And I was today years old when I learned puffin beaks glow in the dark.
I'd rate this a G.

This book was a fun easy read. It will be great for my 3rd grade classroom. The context was so relevant to many students. It had great social emotional aspects too.
"Puffin and Penguin" is a youth graphic novel written by Helaine Becker and illustrated by Kevin Sylvester. Puffin is going to be attending a new school and is worried about making friends. When he is partnered up with Penguin, he feels left out because Penguin is just too busy with all of his activities. Puffin feels misunderstood (other birds think that he is a funny looking penguin) and decides to showcase himself to his classmates. Puffin learns to advocate for himself and makes up with Penguin (who he learns wasn't being a snob, but was just soooo busy). Interesting puffin facts are included in the book. This humorous graphic novel with bright and colorful illustrations will likely be a hit in middle grade graphic novel collections. Recommended where "Pea, Bee, and Jay" or "Pizza and Taco" are popular.
