I really wanted to enjoy this book but I got so confused due to all the different characters it was hard for me to keep track of who was who and the relationships they had with one another, unfortunately this did affect the whole book for me.
I had high hopes for this one but unfortunately there was just too many characters to keep a track of. I also felt that I didnt have a connection with them. I liked this book but I couldnt say I loved it .
The Widow follows Evy, a woman grappling with the sudden death of her husband, which upends her life and forces her to confront her past. As Evy navigates the complexities of grief and her new reality as a widow, she begins to uncover secrets about her marriage that challenge her understanding of love and fidelity. Through her journey, she reflects on her identity before and after marriage, revealing the sacrifices and transformations she has undergone as a mother and wife. The narrative unfolds in a blend of introspection and external conflict, leading Evy to redefine her sense of self and her place in the world.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Widow, particularly appreciating the engaging main character, Evy. Her character growth is a highlight, as she honestly navigates her life before and after marriage and motherhood, providing a relatable perspective on the complexities of womanhood. However, I felt the book lacked sufficient thrill, and some plot elements seemed unconvincing, which detracted from the overall impact of Evy's journey. Despite this, her authenticity and evolution kept me invested in her story.
This book sounded as if it was going to be a paranormal type of read but it wasn't. I found it quite slow all the way through.
Evy, who recently lost her husband, no longer feels safe in her house. Strange occurrences are happening. Is she being paranoid?
This sounded like it would be a creepy read and it definitely was this. The author did a good job of creating a slow burn, spooky storyline, where you really felt the atmosphere. Although this was written well, I found that it wasn’t one I overly enjoyed unfortunately. I found there to be a lot of characters, a good few with the same initials, which made it hard to follow at times. I didn’t feel any connection with the main character either. I found that the chapters were quite choppy and it dragged, making it a struggle to get through. Although this wasn’t for me, I can see a lot of others really appreciating this book, especially those who enjoy dark, eerie stories. 2.5 stars rounded up. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this copy in return for an honest review.
I was ready for this one. It felt different to my usual thriller. More on the shiver up your spine type. I wasn't wrong. And I enjoyed it all the more for that. I never know from a blurb what it will bring if it describes weird goings on in houses. Because i never want to be forced to beleive in some paranormal experiences (not my thing) but every writer that has done something like this, and glad Flood can be added to that mix now too, has managed it brilliantly and the twists and turns were great. It definitely felt very "hhhhhhh!" And creepy at times. I shall be seeking out more from this author and can't wait.
This was definitely a very creepy read for me , the house had very chilling vibes throughout that kept me on edge.
Great read by Helene Flood. The first book I've read by this author.
Overall I found the book good and read within a few nights. I did struggle to warm to the characters though especially Evy. The storyline was great and little creepy.
Will definitely read more from this author
Wow! Very creepy and the perfect book for these darker nights just to really up the eerie vibes. We'll written and just an easy read. Some bits felt like they dragged a little but I was hooked
This book wasn't really for me. However I did read it within a few night so it must have been engaging enough. I couldn't really connect with the characters and I found Evy quite hard to relate to. I think I was expecting a bit more at the end.
Sorry, this is a DNF for me. I found it a depressing read and stopped after a number of chapters.
Thank you NetGalley and the Publishers for this ARC
Wow wow wow! I am literally lost for words. This book is absolutely terrifyingly good. It's addictive, full of twists and the suspense is gripping. Honestly my heart was pounding, I didn't know what was going to happen next. This is one of the best books I've read. The easiest 5 stars I've ever given.
This is by far my favourite book this year, and I read a lot! The writing style is beautiful, and very clever. I really enjoyed the dark, atmospheric plot. It’s a great read and one that I’d definitely recommend.
Helen Flood does it again. What a great read. I couldn't put it down
Thank you for the opportunity to review
A creepy (and i mean creepy) and compelling read.
Fabulous storyline and well written characters.
This is one not to miss!
My thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my copy.
Dark and creepy, this novel has an almost insidous way of getting under your skin. I love a good creepy house mystery, but this is so much more and would make a great film. I read this on a baking hot day, but it's definitely one to be read by candlelight, with a howling wind! Fantastic read.

Bloody brilliant.
Erling's parents insisted it be held in his name only, that their old furniture should remain in place after they were gone. And now Erling's gone too. Her husband and her rock. A heart attack while riding his bike. No trace of his medications were found in his body, as if someone had tampered with them. Right now, Evy can't be sure of anything. Her memory's patchy, her focus blurred. Her grown-up children whisper about her like she can't be trusted to look after herself. How can she tell them she doesn't feel safe in the house? Doors left open she closed herself. Erling's possessions no longer where he left them.
I really appreciate the writing style. It was a fab read.
Thanks to NetGalley and Quercus Books for giving me an advance copy.
