These Young Zoologist books are wonderful. They're educational and interesting. Great for young kids and older readers who like to learn about animals and the environment.

I actually learned quite a few things myself. I didn't realize the adorable pink/white color isn't their only color!

The listening experience was also extremely enjoyable. I loved the addition of the music and the narrator.

I've always been fascinated by axolotls. I've seen them at the zoo, but I didn't actually know a great deal about them before listening to this audiobook.

I knew they were members of the salamander family, but I didn't know they that don't go through metamorphosis to become adults like other amphibians do. I learned that they're nocturnal. I learned about their habitats and anatomy. I learned they have cloaca, which I'd only known birds to have before.

Dr. Jessica LaMae Whited teaches us about pheromones, axolotl mating dances, their life cycle, and shares that they can regrow not only limbs and tails but other parts of themselves which may, with time, prove helpful to people with a variety of different medical conditions.

I think my favorite part of this book was learning about all the different color mutations axolotls can have! I had no idea that the axolotls I'm most familiar seeing aren't how they normally look in the wild.

Learning a little about Aztec mythology relating to axolotls was also really neat, but I was startled to learn they were sometimes served in tamales and eaten! That's a big no-no now since they're critically endangered!

This book taught me SO many interesting things about axolotls, and I love that the author is a woman scientist! It's great inspiration for girls everywhere to get excited by science and the big wide world around them!

This is a fun and fascinating book full of facts about axolotl. I love this book for rides in the car because it's easy to turn off and pick back up between each quick fact.

I listened to this audiobook with my six year old child who is very interested in axolotls. The narration was good and the descriptions were just detailed enough for the audiobook format to not feel lacking. The chapters/sections were well organized. And my son enjoyed it enough that he wanted to sit in the driveway to finish listening instead of going immediately inside. I will note that the final section explains axolotl reproduction which led my child to ask human reproduction questions. I consider this kind of age appropriate scientific information beneficial and welcomed the conversation, just something to be aware of if you have younger children or don't want to be caught off guard.

This is a harder one for me to rate. I listened to it on audiobook and I thought it would be cool for my 6 year old to listen to as well. A 20min audiobook doesn’t seem bad until it’s a very factual book. My daughter lost interest right away. It was too hard for her to picture what was being talked about. I even had a hard time as an adult. They really need to make a bundle with books and audio. But after that I listened to it and I did really enjoy it. I learned basically everything about axolotl’s because I only knew what they looked like and that they were endangered.
I would recommend this to readers but probably middle grade vs elementary age.

Thank you to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio.

I really enjoyed this book and I loved how excited the narrator was to be reading it. I am defiantly older than the target audience but it was a fun read as a huge axolotl nerd. It reminded me of the PBS show Wild Kratz. My one complaint is the descriptions of the anatomy are not detailed enough if you are only reading the audiobook. If I am an adult confused by the descriptions I feel like a child would have even more difficulty. I also think the book should include further resources for kids as this is such a brief overview.

Axolotl's are everywhere nowadays: clothing, backpacks, shoes, even jewelery. Pretty cool for an animal that's critically endangered! Hopefully that brings the plight of the axolotl to everyone's attention and inspires the world to save this amazing creature. This audiobook tells kids everything they need to know about our friend the axolotl - where to find one, what exactly they're looking for, and what supplies they'll need if they meet one. Then they dive into the world of the axolotl and we learn everything from what they eat to who eats them, how they got their name and so much more. The narrator makes the book fun to listen to and easy to understand, she's wonderful. I would recommend this to any young child who's interested in animals, generally between the ages of 2-8. Toddlers may not fully understand all of the book but they will definitely find it fun to listen to and will pick up on the fun parts of the book.

Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Quic, fun, and informative book on a popular animal! I learned a lot about one of my favorite animals. I think especially kids 4-10 would enjoy this book. I think the audio was well narrated but I would recommend listening and looking at the book so you can see the different species talked about.

"Axolotl (Young Zoologist): A First Field Guide to the Amphibian that Never Grows Up" is children's nonfiction
by Neon Squid; Dr. Jessica LaMae Whited.

This review refers to the audiobook only of this book. It is information packed!

Soneela Nankani delivers the narration in an approachable, friendly way. Background music and sound effects add to the story nicely.

The book is organized by starting with the fact file about the animal. Then they tell you what kit is needed to study them in the wild versus in a lab. Then they talk about the anatomy, then the habitat, what they eat, dangers, super powers, and where they are found in culture.

A few things I learned were that they are actually a kind of salamander, and they are critically endangered. They have feathery gills that stick out around their heads. They do not go through metamorphosis, and they always keep their tails. If they lose a limb or tail, it will grow back. Also, if they lose part of their heart or spine, it will regenerate. This regeneration is like a superpower, and it is the main reason they are being studied for future medical use for humans.

In the wild, they live in two lakes in Mexico, but other habitats are being created for them. Dangers to them are loss of habitat and invasive species predators.

Axolotls are found in video games as well as Mexican paper currency. One of the Aztec icons was Shallut, the Aztec God of fire and lightning, who turned himself into an Axolotl.

I highly recommend this book! It is a great book for a school or classroom library. It's useful information for anyone interested in learning about Axolotls.

I listened to the audiobook version of this book. There was so much great information given. It would be best if you can look through the physical or ebook and listen to the audiobook. The narrator did a great job. We learned new things even though we have learned about Axolotl before. My kids enjoyed listening to it.

Thank you NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for the opportunity to listen to this book in advance.

My kids and I love the Young Zoologist books so we were super excited to receive this one. I love that the Axolotl has it's own book now, you don't hear about this amphibian and there is so many interesting facts to be told. The narrator did amazing at keeping my kids engaged in the story and learn new facts. We can't wait to get more of these audiobooks. We like to listen to them on our Yoto Player.

Thank you to the author and NetGalley for this ARC!!

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for my gifted audiobook.

This was such an interesting book and I cannot wait to buy the physical copy for my classroom. There is so much information packed in this one that is presented in a fun and exciting way. I can see my students going back into this book numerous times to memorize these facts. Axolotls are such fun creatures and kids love them!

My kids love the Young Zoologist books, so we were excited to preview the new audiobook, Axolotl. Similar in format to the print books, there is lots of information presented in the audiobook. The narration performance was engaging without being obnoxious, which is such a fine line that not all audio content at kids manages to get right. My kids particularly enjoyed the variety of fun facts (there was a good one about limbs!), but some of the specific measurements were hard to follow in audio format. Overall, we really enjoyed this book and look forward to more in this series, both in audio and print.

Thank you to Macmillan Audio for gifting my family with an ALC to review. All opinions are my own.

My kids and I absolutely adored learning about the axolotl through this audiobook. It was so wonderfully narrated and made each section feel so exciting. The audio had background sound effects and music that paired well with the text and never overwhelmed the narration. Highly recommend this audiobook, especially for a fun car ride listening experience!

For this review I let my 8 year old going into third grade help me review it. She is very into axolotls and would be the primary audience.
Her words "It was really good, I liked it, It was kinda interesting. I liked learning about all the new facts. The book was at my level. I learned some new facts that I did not know. I liked the whole thing"
She seemed to be very invested the entire time and was kept engaged. Axolotls are very popular currently at the elementary age and she often is upset at the lack of books available to her on the subject. I personally would have enjoyed having pictures to go with what was being said about them but this did not seem to affect my child.
