I liked this one, and felt like it would be perfect for kids who love animals! (Think, the ones that want to go to zoo camp in the summer, or watch "Wild Kratts.") The info was in small, digestible bites, and there was some light music in the background.
This is truly 20 minutes of straight facts, though, and might be a slog for younger kids (unless they have a hyper-focus about animal facts). If yours has the attention span for it, I'd say go for it.
Audio is tough for books like these. I think they work best as compilations, in maybe in conjunction with works of fiction. They are produced well, though, and could appeal to many types of people.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC. I purchased the print version for my library.
Very sweet and informative! I've really enjoyed books from this series and I look forward to sharing them with the young people in my life. The audio is clear and lively, and the added sounds help create more atmosphere. Fantastic for kiddos who love to learn about the natural world, and enjoy stories at bedtime or during car trips, etc. A great option to have on hand.
Enjoyable audio experience and full of facts that are sure to keep both kids and adults engaged! It features some music and sound effects that add an extra layer of interest!
Thank you to NetGalley and NeonSquid for the audio ARC of this book.

I really enjoyed this little nonfiction book. My kids would love to own the physical copy of it. While I loved the narrator and the musical effects added, I do think the audio is lacking a little due to the loss of the pictures and illustrations in the original book.
Sometimes nonfiction kids books don't translate well to audiobook but this one was very well done! My 7yo (who is absolutely obsessed with animals and the natural world!) loved this one! There's plenty of facts about capybara but there's also a lot of info about other animals and how they relate to capybara (like other animals that have a relationship with birds etc).
The 20 minute audiobook length is absolutely perfect to listen to in the car and we were able to finish it during one trip running errands. The narrator is dynamic enough to hold interest and there are lots of sound effects (mostly nature sounds) that correspond to what is being read.
Definitely recommend for kids who are fans of Wild Kratts or who love learning about different animals. Great conversation sparker and fun learning!
A first guide to cute capybaras from expert Dr. Julia Mata.
Thank you Macmillan Audio for sending me an audio ARC of this book! I enjoyed reading this book. I think Capybaras are so cute. I learned a lot about them from reading this book.
After reading both Axolotl and Capybara I immediately went to my library and tried to get as many of these audiobooks as I could. This series has a lot of interesting facts and I think my middle schoolers would have loved these. I am learning so much. I never thought about capybaras and guinea pigs being related.

I received a copy of this audiobook from netGalley for a honest review.
I loved this little audiobook all about the adorable large rodents- capybara. The details were described in great detail so I could see the animal and hear it's sounds. I learned a lot.
This was a cute listen about animals for kids. I really enjoyed listening to this with my grandson. It was informative but also done in a way that was understandable for kids. It was great that this was an audiobook and kept us engaged during the story. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
The book was beautifully written. The author made careful word choices that were very impactful. Overall, the book was well written and I did really enjoy it.
I love the capability of this book to generate curiosity in young readers. The layout of the book lends to preparing a little scientist for an expedition. Who what when where as well as how are answered throughout the field guide. It also leaves out enough information for little explorers to want to continue researching the capybara.
Going into this book, I knew very little about capybaras. I knew they were the largest rodent in the world, but that's about it.
This book taught me SO MUCH! I learned that they are so large they're 5,000 times bigger than the smallest rodent! I learned about their diet, their weight (about two 8 year old children), their habitats, their relatives (chinchillas were my favorite), and much, much more.
Dr. Julia Mata also teaches us about their life cycle, mating, pregnancy, the way they share responsibilities, predators, and animals they have mutually beneficial relationships with.
Young or old, if you have any interest in these fascinating creatures, you've got some exciting things to learn from this awesome little book.
Absolutely adorable — I listened to it twice. I love this educational and funny field guide to capybaras.
Production for this audiobook is amazing.
I didn’t know these Young Zoologist books existed before I saw this ARC on NetGalley and now I need to collect them all for my son’s library.
Wonderful audio book! My 7 year old and I listed together. We learned so much from the book. It kept her engaged and asking more questions. It was easy to follow and was nicely paced.

"Capybara" (Young Zoologist) is a MG nonfiction audiobook.
Mata’s writing is clear and provides a wealth of interesting facts that will delight naturalists of all ages. The audiobook's short length makes it perfect for quick listening sessions.
This audiobook is an excellent resource for young animal lovers and budding zoologists alike.
Initially I requested this book for my daughter but after our fail of the first one we listened to I decided to just listen to this by myself. I did listen to it on 2x speed and it was still easy to listen and understand. The one thing that stuck out to me was I had no clue they could weigh 110lbs. And really everything else we were taught. I enjoyed this educational read. The narrator was easy to listen to. I would recommend this read to probably middle grade listeners.
Thank you to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio.
Capybara (Young Zoologist) is a fascinating exploration of the world's largest rodent. Dr. Julia Mata's informative writing style brings these amazing creatures to life, providing a wealth of knowledge for young zoologists. While the book can get a bit dry in places, the captivating illustrations and engaging facts make it a worthwhile read for any animal lover.
This is sooo fun! It includes what you need to pack to go find Capybaras and while "packing" it tells you why you need them including other predators like snakes and hates because of the confitions they live in. I love the way this is set up for children. Small quick facts for kids to remember. It is going to be a favorite in my family for sure and we will be checking out all of the young zoologist.
"Capybara (Young Zoologist): A First Field Guide to the Biggest Rodent in the World" by Neon Squid and Dr. Julia Mata is children's nonfiction.
I listened to the audiobook version of this narrated by Catherine Ho. Her narration is excellent. Unfortunately, some of the background music in this near the beginning is so busy and circus-like that it is quite distracting. (-1 ⭐️)
The Young Zoologist books all follow a similar format that works well. It starts with the fact file. Capybaras are mammals, and they are rodents. They are like huge
mice with no tails. Adult capybaras are each about 110 lbs. They have long fur that is reddish to brown.
Next, they tell you what you need to pack to study them. Then it tells you what capybaras are related to, such as guinea pigs, chinchillas, and nutria.
They they cover habitat and diet and mating info. Capybaras live in South America east of the Andes Mountains, so in every country except Chile in South America. They live in large groups of 5-20 in savannahs and in small packs of 2-4 in forests. They are also semi-aquatic and spend a lot of time swimming. They eat grasses and swamp vegetation.
Then there is some info about their predators and their friends. Jaguars are their worst predators. Birds are their friends, and some birds hang out on the backs of capybaras.
It is a very good book about capybaras. It is probably better to read this as a book than listen to it as an audiobook of that is an option. Plus. they're a really cute animal. I saw one at Disney's Discovery Island back in the early 90s. I was fascinated!!
Thank you to Netgalley, MacMillan Audio, MacMillan Young Listeners, Neon Squid, and Dr. Julia Mata for providing this audiobook in exchange for my honest review.
