I love everything about this book. It's fun, informative and full of fantastic, colourful illustrations and facts about the animals we love to call pets.
Russell Kane's humour and obvious love for animals shines through.
Really looking forward to having a physical copy if this book, it will be well loved by children and adults too.
Lovely illustrated book, full of information. Russell Kane's writing is, as you'd expect, funny and cheeky but also has pretty sensible advice. It is more of a cat and dog breed book (with a much smaller section about other pets) than the blurb implies. Although I found the history behind breeds to be interesting I was hoping for more on mixed breeds and adopting pets. A nice book but not exactly what I was expecting
A fun and very funny guide to picking your next pet, with terrific photos, illustrations, factoids, and more. Focuses on 40 breeds of typical or unusual creatures. Recommended!
This was a great book to read with my five year old son. We both really enjoyed learning about all of the different types of animals we could have as pets. I liked the use of both photos and illustrations through the book.
I especially enjoyed the section about different cat breeds. I feel like cat breeds are often neglected in these types of books in favor of discussing all of the different dog breeds. I appreciated that the author gave equal space in this book to both cats and dogs. Can you tell I’m a cat person?!
This book also talks about responsible pet ownership and picking the right animal for your family. Both important things for kids to learn! I definitely recommend checking out this book with your animal loving kiddo.
Thank you, Quarto Publishing Group and NetGalley, for this ARC of Pet Selector! written by Russell Kane and illustrated by Erica Salcedo!
This is a wonderful book for children and adults who may be debating what animal and breed is the best fit for them and their families! This is not a training book but a nonfiction book filled with facts about different cats, dogs, rodents, rabbits, birds, reptiles, and even bugs. This book is heavy on information but not overwhelming regarding pets. This book would be wonderful for a child or teen who wants to learn more about certain pets or is already fascinated by animals in general. Each animal has their own overview section, personality description, history of the animal, and a scale rating of what the animal is like. Very user-friendly, and I definitely could see this being checked out often in my school's nonfiction section of the library! The descriptions of each animal are so creative and funny; I loved going through them and learning new things.
The illustrations by Erica Salcedo are creative and make this book eye-catching! They also capture the different animals' personalities, which is helpful for younger readers.
Side note: The only issue I had was the page about House Rabbits. I personally grew up with house rabbits for over 10+ years, and while some of those facts are true, some are not. You do not have to use a breeder to adopt/purchase a rabbit, and just because the upfront cost is not expensive does not mean that you won't have expensive bills if your rabbit becomes sick, needs medical care, or becomes injured. It is also important that your rabbit goes to a vet specializing in rabbits, not just a cat/dog veterinarian. Rabbits do well left alone during the day, but if your rabbit is bonded with you (humans) and you leave for an extended amount of time or go on a long trip and they don't see you (with a sitter still), some rabbits can experience serious distress. I also would recommend Holland Lop rabbits over French Lops because they stay smaller, live longer lives, and are very friendly. Remember, though, that all rabbits have very different personalities, and these aren't pets for carrying around with you. Sorry for my rant, but rabbits are such a special animal to me. I studied them for years as a kid to get one and loved every rabbit I had while growing up.
Overall, I would recommend this book to others, but note no two animals will ever be the same, even the same breed! Thank you again for this ARC!

As a pre-K teacher using the Creative Curriculum, this is the perfect addition to our Pet Study. I love the down-to-earth manner in which Russel Kane engages with the audience. This is perfect for kids in the intermediate grades (2+) as it provides valuable information about cats, dogs, and other common pets. Each pet is rated for intelligence, playfulness, neediness, outdoor skills, and lovingness. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this advance readers copy in exchange for my honest review.
What an adorable book filled with a range of wonderful animals.
I wish I had this book growing up — I know I would have loved it. But you know who’d love this even more? My five year old niece. (Ordering online as I type!)
The illustrations are so lovely and fun, and the text is enaging. I love the little score cards for every breed!
The passion that Russel Kane has for animals clearly shines throughout with the humourous and unique descriptions.
I initially downloaded this book thinking it would be a small guide for really young readers (ages 3-5 maybe). However, this was not the case (much to my delight)! This book is large and had a lot of text which I think could overwhelm young readers. That being said, it would be a great book for them to grow into. The humour and details would definitely suit an older age bracket, but I think younger kids would be just as hooked. The design of highlighting some buzz words with a different font is a nice touch!
I would definitely recommend this to any animal loving family to buy for their kids.
I think it would be fun if Russell did a follow-up with some non-traditional pets including rats, ferrets, etc!
Where was this book when I grew up? I would have read this one so many times that the spine would not make it and my mother would have needed to buy me a new one. The Dachshund pages were my favorites. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
What an amazing book to teach kids about various animals!
I loved all of the descriptions and I actually learned a TON!! The pictures were fun to look at and I loved reading the histories of each of the breeds. Would recommend this for ages 6+ as it does have a lot of information! Would definitely buy this for an elementary school child :).
This book gives information about a large selection of cats, dogs, and some other types of pets. It's very informative, amusing, and includes pictures of the pets as well as cute illustrations throughout. If you have a child who loves to learn all about different breeds of pets, they'd love this!
Adorable book about different pets. Includes lots of information about dogs and cats. Including whether the breed is playful, loving, needy, etc. Cute book for kids interested in getting a pet that fits in with their family.
Pet Selector! is a book that is sure to delight animal loving children. The illustrations are vibrant and fun to look at and the text is both informative and engaging. Because of the humor I think this book would be best suited for late elementary school or high school (any younger and it might go over their head!) I can see this book being used as a resource to persuade parents to let their family get a pet. It would also be a great resource to use in the classroom in persuasive writing units! Overall, I highly recommend this book to young animal lovers.
What an absolutely gorgeous book. Russell Kane is clearly passionate about animals and in this book he takes us through some popular breeds of cat and dog.
I would highly recommend this book to any parents who are considering bringing an animal into their household.
Thanks Netgalley, it's already on pre order!
I loved this book and would definitely purchase it for my school library. The short informative and interesting paragraphs along with great illustrations were perfect for my primary school kids but would still be an interesting read for an older child.
Thanks to Netgallery and Quarto Publishing Group for the opprtunity to enjoy this e-ARC
This book is very informative for kids who want to learn about animals. It has sections on cats, dogs, and other various animals. It goes into detail about the history and personality of each animal and then rates them on different categories. It is very informative, and it is filled with amazing illustrations. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to learn about pets.
My three year old was excited about this one. He loves cats and dogs. Lots of information. I would definitely recommend this for the older reader (5+) but it was still fun. Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!
This is the perfect book for myself and kids to enjoy as we’re learning about the different breeds of cats and dogs. We see so many different ones at the park and that our friends and family has. The author made this fun and exciting! Love the illustrations and colors too. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for a copy.
Pet Selector! is a great guide to household pets that has adorable commentary and illustrations. I really loved how much care the author took when talking about each breed! The pics were hilarious and fantastic.
I wish there had been a little more focus on rescuing pets from shelters personally. I was also hoping for a few more pets besides cats, dogs, and rabbits, but this was still a super fun read! I can definitely see kiddos poring over it before choosing their next family pet. Thanks to Russell Kane, NetGalley, and Quarto Publishing for the chance to read and review. My thoughts are my own
Pet Selector! is a cute guide for kids to help them pick the right pet or cat/dog breed for them and their families. It’s a funny non-fiction book I’d recommend for kids age 10 or older as it dies contain a lot of text that might deter younger readers.
What I liked: super cute, bright, and cheerful illustrations throughout by Erica Salcedo really added to the book, how the book is organized is well done and it has very humorous anecdotes and artwork throughout.
What could have been better: Maybe overcrowded animal shelters are an America only problem and not also a UK one (though I somehow doubt that) I wish Mr Kane had pushed animal rescue (of all animals but especially dogs and cats) instead of using breeders. But his love of animals defibrillator shines throughout.
This was a fun and informative book for kids of all ages looking for the perfect pet.
**Thanks to the author, illustrator, and publisher for the e-ARC I received via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.**
My kids are absolutely obsessed with animals and just loved this book! It was so cute! Loved the way it kept the kids engaged. Well done.
