The Amish are famous for their incredible food, especially baked goods. Laura Anne Lapp illustrates that in her excellent cookbook, Amish Pies: Traditional Fruit, Nut, Cream, Chocolate, and Custard Pies. There are so many mouthwatering pies in this cookbook, pie bakers will swoon.
The recipes are written in the traditional manner, with a list of ingredients followed by step-by-step instructions that are easy to follow whether it be by beginning bakers or those with lots of baking experience. The book starts out with five different crusts, and goes through plenty of helps and tips to make beautiful, tender crusts. Of course, the best part of the cookbook includes dozens of mouthwatering pies that will make it difficult to decide which pie to make next.
Another positive aspect of this cookbook is that it includes gorgeous, professional photographs of the finished pies, as well as in the instructions on the basics such as pie crusts.
All told, this is the only pie cookbook anyone could need. There are recipes for almost every pie imaginable, and recipes that can use personal variations. Since most of us serve pies during the holidays, especially at Thanksgiving, this book will be a bible for adding new flavors of pies to serve. This book is highly recommended.

This is a great cookbook! The recipes are easy to follow. There are even some non-sweet pies in this which was a nice surprise as I was expecting this to be a dessert cookbook. The photos throughout are great! The pies I'm most excited to try are the Fresh Strawberry Pie, Layered Pumpkin Pie,Peanut Butter Pie with Chocolate Crust,Maple Cream Pie,Vanilla crumb Pie and the Chicken Pie. I love a good pie book! I haven't tried any of these recipes yet, but I am really excited to try them! There are classic ones but some unique ones as well that look so interesting.
I love to try Amish recipes and this cookbook had me excited because I love to make pies. The two recipes I have tried will definitely be added to my own recipe book because friends and family enjoyed them. I love lemon and will give any recipe a try that includes it. I had never heard of much less tried a Lemon Sponge Pie but let me tell you it was a tasty delight. I also tried the Chicken Pot Pie because I absolutely love savory pies and this recipe did not disappoint. The recipes were easy to follow and not at all complicated. This Cookbook is a wonderful collection of not only sweet but savory pies as well, you'll be happy you gave it a try!
The Amish are famous for their pies. If you have ever traveled to Amish country and have experienced their baked goods you know what I am talking about. This cookbook takes you inside their kitchens so show you how you to can bake like the Amish. This book shares some of their most popular pies. Probably the one pie that is their most popular is shoofly pie. You have to try this pie at least once. If shoofly pie is not for you there are plenty of options for you to try such as peanut butter pie, fresh peach pie or even their chicken pot pie. If you are a baker this book needs to be on your shelf. You might even learn how to make pie crust like the Amish.
I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook. This was a great cookbook! I am always trying to find and try new recipes and to perfect my cooking. The recipes seem easy to follow and the book has beautiful photos. Highly recommend
This is a lovely book, with quality photographs of pies that will make your mouth water, guaranteed! The ingredients are simple and directions are clear, making it useful to all levels of bakers. It was also fun reading the little anecdotes about the type of event where a particular pie is often served, and how certain variations of the recipes have been passed down over the years. With a section on pie crust tips at the beginning and measurement conversions listed at the end, the cookbook is helpful , attractive, and interesting.
Amish Pies is a true gem among baking books. Many of the recipes I’ve never seen before and after trying several I can say without a doubt they are absolutely delicious.All the recipes are made from scratch with a few timesavers if you planning to bake soon that are hugely helpful especially regarding pie crusts. I can’t wait to continue trying more recipes within these pages it’s a game changer for holidays here on out. If you live to bake and you want to up

Amish Pies by Laura Anne Lapp is a wonderful mix of sweet, savory, and downright fantastic assortment of make-from-scratch pies for almost any occasion. The recipes are simple and easy to follow which makes homemade pie making simple for a beginner. I made the chicken pie as well as the lemon meringue and both were so tasty I can't wait to try more of these recipes when I am able.
This is a wonderful cookbook dedicated to pie. Everyone loves pie and this book contains everything you need to make one from different crusts to pies of all varieties including fruit, nuts, cream, etc. I cannot wait to try the homemade peanut butter cream and the maple cream. Of the very popular pie types like pecan and pumpkin the author gives multiple versions of a recipe for the reader to try.
For myself I’m a decent cook but homemade pie dough I’ve never gotten right and this includes several recipes and tips on how to get it right. Honestly if you love pie and want a cookbook dedicated to it you can’t go wrong with this book. Definitely worth a spot on the bookshelf of any home cook.

Fascinated by Amish Pies...
I do like pie, more than cake, that's for sure. I particularly am fond of Amish pies and this book: Amish Pies delivers. Pies I've never heard of, much less baked. The recipes are laid out well with photos.
Highly recommend, if you love pie.
Oh everyone likes a slice a pie and this book has the most delicious recipes. Much more than traditional Apple, Pumpkin, and Peach. I'm talkin about how to make different variations of pie crusts and pies. Fruit pies, Nut pies, Cream pies, ice cream pies and also what the author calls Savory Pies. Also has Amish favorites Snitz and ShooflySimple to read instructions, notes, variations to pies and detailed pictures of each pie. I have made the Chicken Pie and got rave reviews on the Tomato Pie, which is one I have not heard of. I used fresh garden tomatoes and basil and it turned out amazing. So many pies to choose, my next will be the Coconut Oatmeal and Raisin Creme pies. This pie cookbook belongs in every bakers collection. With it's wide variety of types of pies it won't disappoint. Yum, Yum!

I love cookbooks handed down to us from the Amish people and Amish Pies by Laura Anne Lapp does not disappoint. With an honest and raw opening full of wisdom and grace, Amish Pies covers traditional (if I remember correctly), fruit, nut, cream, and savory. I was impressed by the simplicity of the recipes and the variations of some of the more traditional recipes. I’m quite the baker and best known for my oatmeal cake. All these years of experimenting with oatmeal, I have never run across a recipe for oatmeal crust OR oatmeal pie. Now I cannot wait to try both recipes, as well as the peanut butter layered pie and rhubarb pie.

The Amish people are known for their simple, yet amazing food and dessert. I was thrilled to get a copy of this book focusing on pies, since I both love to bake and eat them! The recipes are simply written, each with an accompanying picture, and require no special ingredients or techniques. I have bookmarked so many that I can't wait to try. Also a shoutout to the photographer - in keeping with the Amish simplicity, the pictures aren't overly styled and look like they were taken at the kitchen table. This is a must have cookbook!
I love pies and especially Amish made pies. Unfortunately I live where I can no longer purchase authentic ones. I was excited to open this cookbook and find the recipes that I love and remember. I cannot wait to try to bake as they do. I love how they added stories throughout. This will be a book I know that I will return to many times. I received a copy through Netgalley. A review was not required.

A nice book of homemade pie recipes. Chapters are Pie Crusts; Fruit Pies; Nut Pies; Cream and Ice Cream Pies; Chocolate, Vanilla, Shoofly, and More Pies; and Savory Pies.
All the recipes have delicious looking color photos. Some of the fruit pies use Jell-O as part of the glaze, but for the most part these use fairly basic ingredients. Some of the pie types have multiple recipes variations. There are a handful of pies in here I haven't heard of.
I appreciate that these are crows pleasers, tried and true recipes that don't have overly complicated and fancy decorations or ingredients.
I live near a lot of Amish and Old Order Mennonites (as attested by the ‘Watch for the Buggies’ signs on the blacktop), and they keep a lot of produce and farm shops open, so I’ve known forever how good their baking is. In fact, I’ve read several booklets on Amish cooking, baking, and canning—most without photographs included. So, when I saw this illustrated pie book by Laura Anne Lapp, I swiped it up.
Truly, you do not know what heaven is until you’ve eaten Strawberry Rhubarb Crumb Pie. I grow rhubarb and strawberries on my farm to make pies, but they’ve never tasted the same as the ones that the Mennonites sell. Unfortunately, those pies are now about $10 (or sometimes more!). In all of the cookbooks I’ve read, I’ve never found a recipe for this…until I opened up “Amish Pies: Traditional Fruit, Nut, Cream, Chocolate, and Custard Pies.” The author included not just the recipe for the inside of the pie, but also that scrumptious recipe for the crumb topping on top and the crust. How do I know it’s the same pie without having tried out this particular recipe? Because, based on the ingredients provided and the full color photo, it’s a mirror image of the Mennonite pie I eat/ate; the only exception being that the Mennonites added more crumb topping. I am pulling out my frozen rhubarb tonight to make this pie tomorrow!
This book is arranged in sections, including: Introduction; Pie Crusts; Fruit Pies; Nut Pies; Cream and Ice Cream Pies; Chocolate, Vanilla, Shoofly, and More Pies; and Savory Pies. The author also included an index and a special section on Metric Conversions for readers outside the United States.
All of the classic Amish and Mennonite pies are included in this book. For example, you can’t easily find a recipe for Snitz Pie—it’s just not one of those pies that you can find either in a grocery store or even in Amish or Mennonite produce stores. But the inclusion of this recipe—as well as the numerous recipes for pie crusts of all kinds—make this book really invaluable.
If you’re not lucky enough to live near the Amish or the Mennonites, you have my condolences. But if you’ve ever passed through and eaten their pies and yearn for them, then this book is for you. Those ladies make some of the best baked goods west of the Atlantic. If you’ve never had a chance to even visit an Amish or Mennonite community, you really ought to think about getting a copy of this book—only then will you know what you’ve been missing!

Amish are well known for high-quality, made from scratch products, be it food, furniture, buildings, etc., and this is no exception. I've had the opportunity to make a couple of the recipes in here so far and they've all been easy to follow and delicious. I love that most, if not all, of the recipes have a picture to go along with them. This is always so helpful to home bakers to use as a reference but so rare to find a book that has them in such abundance.
