Compared to The Match, this was a lot better and more exciting for me, I'm just a sucker for enemies to lovers and Sarah delivered on this one. I felt like the pacing and the chemistry and everything was just right and I completely cozied up with this one.

I can’t get over the amount of perfect romance this book generated and the joy it brought me listening to it. It had swoon, sweetness, slow burn and angst that all made this enemies-to-lovers a superb love story.

Ryan’s romantic gestures and protective but not overbearing nature made me sigh and have heart eyes for him. I loved the humorous writing and June’s character was so sweet. The duo narration by Connie Shabshab and Will Damron was lovely and made the story so entertaining to experience.

Sarah Adams is the queen of cute, simple romances that leave you with butterflies. I love her work because her characters feel like your friends, and you find yourself invested in their happy endings. The Enemy was no different, and I really loved the voice for her MCs in this one.

Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Enemy is book number two in the It Happened in Charleston Series. The Match was book number one. I absolutely loved both books and would recommend them both to romance readers that love a friends or enemies to lovers trope!

June is experiencing what many women do after a breakup. Body insecurities and trust issues. Can you imagine being engaged and your fiancé telling you that he’s been cheating on you because he no longer finds you attractive? I’d be absolutely crushed and wallowing in all of the world’s sorrow! June tries to keep herself busy and distracted with work and helping plan her best friend’s wedding. That is until her high school enemy returns to town for the wedding. Avoiding him and beating him at every chance is what she focuses on. They are both very competitive and determined to outshone one another. However, June’s focus may be too narrowed in to understand that this handsome, three star Michelin chef genuinely adores her and has been pining over her for the past twelve or so years. Will June be able to put her own thoughts, assumptions, and insecurities aside or will she remain in her own way and jeopardize a shot at true happiness with Ryan?

What I loved:
Ryan’s nickname for June…June Bug
June’s family…everyone deserves a family like June’s
Ryan…so sweet and sincere, determined, & head over heels in love
June’s desire for independence and success
The banter between June and Ryan and Ryan’s protectiveness over June

Favorite Quote: “I’ll be a sophisticated, sexy lady, and my man will pick up Chinese takeout after work and bring it back to our fancy apartment, and he’ll be wearing a fancy suit from his fancy job, and we will drink fancy wine and watch my favorite movie.”

I really enjoyed the first book in this series and have also enjoyed everything I've read by Sarah Adams, so it's no surprise I enjoyed this book as well. However, I didn't enjoy it as much as the first book in this series - The Catch. This book doesn't really have as much "enemies to lovers" as much as missed opportunities. Sure the main characters enjoyed playing pranks on each other, but that was the extent of their rivalry. I enjoyed the chapters from the male POV better, but that is something that happens with every book I read, so it's not a take away from this book.

Just like the previous book in the series, I really enjoyed the epilogues (there were 2) and I enjoy a time skip epilogue more than anything. It really gives the story that closure and finality that I crave from a book.

Thanks to #NetGalley for an e-copy of #TheEnemy by Sarah Adams to read and review.

I had a great time listening to this audiobook, the pace was great, it had lots of funny moments and banter, I loved the characters, they had good chemistry, and it was moving and heartwarming. This is my kind or rom-com.

Sarah Adams creates such lovable, endearing characters that draw me in. This story is interconnected to The Match, but you don’t have to read it to read this one (but you should because it’s great)!!

June and Ryan have known each other since they were younger. As adults, their mutual best friends are getting married and they are the maid of honor and best man! June is super nervous about being faced with the man who almost kissed her at graduation, but decided not to. And Ryan is surprised to see that June has some left over anger from then.

June is surprised to see that Ryan is happy to see her. She puts up walls and Ryan crashes them down. But like all of us, June is struggling with past hurts that makes it hard for her to trust anyone who wants to get close to her. Ryan is experiencing past regrets too and wants the chance to get to know June again.

Ryan’s determination to meet June where she is at is so sweet, and how he walks with her where she’s at to earn her trust. I also enjoy how Ryan and June constantly poke at each other, playing pranks or teasing each other because it’s their love language!

I love June’s family and their interactions with Ryan as well. They are the kind of family that would be fun to hang out with!

It was also enjoyable to see Ryan weigh what success and happiness looks like to him. Just because you are great at something doesn’t mean that’s that you were meant to do. I loved seeing June’s confidence grow as she figures out her next steps in life too.

Connie Shabshab and Will Damron did a great job narrating June and Ryan. Connie portrays June’s cute-stubbornness of her personality as she battles her emotions of seeing Ryan again. Will does a great job of taking us through Ryan’s feelings as he spends time with June again. He displays a confidence and seriousness tone in his voice that seemed very much like Ryan’s character.

Great romance book by a great author. Loved the story and plot line. The cover is beautiful and will definitely read from this author again

I love Sarah Adams! I read this back-to-back with The Match and adored it. Her books always make me feel so good. I adored June and Ryan and their love story. I also loved the opportunity to listen to this audiobook. I'm no stranger to Will Damron's work, but Connie Shabshab was a new-to-me narrator. Both performers felt like great fits for their characters.

June is the sister of Jake from The Match. I loved her in that book and loved her even more in this one! I feel like we'd be good friends if I met her IRL. Her family also make great side characters.

Sarah Adams is a must-read author for me!

Such a cute listen. There was such witty banter in this second chance enemies to lovers.

I love when rom coms have bakeries (or any type of restaurant) and weddings as a backdrop. check and check. And add in great secondary characters (family) and it's sure to be a win for me.

June read a little young and the romance was missing a little chemistry but it was an enjoyable listen and made me chuckle a time or two.

Connie Shabshab and Will Damron did a great job narrating the romance. Having read other reviews it seems that the audiobook is better liked than the book and that is no doubt due to the narration. Will Damron is becoming one of my favorite male narrators in a rom com audiobook.

I think Sarah Adams has an important place in the genre, but this one didn't land for me. It felt like the tropes were unbalanced, leading to a combination of feeling too many "we know what comes next" moments that jostled the listener out of the book, and some frustration/disconnect with the characters.

I really enjoyed The Match, so I was really excited to see that the second book in the series was coming out! I knew I had to read it. Sadly, this is probably my least favorite book from Sarah Adams.

June’s inner monologue was a bit cringy. She came across as immature and slightly unhinged. Her dislike of Ryan didn’t make a lot of sense to me. He seemed like a great guy and she just couldn’t get out of her own head. I listened to this on audio and I think the female narrator’s voice contributed to June coming across as so immature.

I did enjoy the side characters and the premise, but just couldn’t get over June and her behavior. I love Sarah Adams’ books and will continue to read them, but this one just wasn’t for me.

2.5 Stars

I didn’t hate it, all the standard themes and tropes are there that I love to read, but it’s like the proportions were all off. Clichés crossed lines into toxic, annoying, and outdated… or all three at once. The characters consistently acted erratic or obnoxious. And their professional woes just didn’t feel well established or believable. A lot of the story ended up rubbing the wrong way, enough that by the end the star rating had dropped off, despite my general love of Sarah Adams’s writing.

Such a fun, light rom-com read! I really enjoyed this audiobook and loved all the laugh out loud moments that were scattered throughout the ENTIRE book!!! So so fun when you have a really good real laugh from hearing something hilarious. I really enjoyed that this could be a standalone book, but did have slight references back to the first book in the series if you have already read it. I’d categorize this book as a slow slow burn and very low spice. Very PG, almost G level romance, but it still worked for me. I will definitely be back to read a book 3 if there is one and really loved all the laughs from this one.

Sarah Adam's books are so good! I didn't realize that this one had been published earlier, and is now being recorded as an audiobook. But either way, I liked it! The audiobook was good.

Ah sarah you never disappoint me. The Enemy was a really good story. Great character and the story kept me gripped. Great narration by 2 narrators I've never listened to before. If Sarah writes it I'll read it

This book gave me a good laugh! I was rooting for both of them to come to their senses and give into their feels. Sarah Adams gave an enjoyable ride through the plot and character development.

It’s been twelve years since June Broaden has seen her high school enemy (and secret crush), Ryan Henderson. Now’s her chance to get even. Ryan is back in town for her best friend’s wedding, and June is eager to show the former bully exactly what he missed out on. What’s she’s not expecting, though, is for Ryan to show up looking like Adonis and touting his own career success as the youngest chef to ever win three Michelin stars.

This was my second book from Sarah Adams, and I can say I’m now a fan of hers. If you know me, you know I love intelligent banters, and they were abundant in this. June was so funny, I chuckled out loud in places reading this. And Ryan was totally successful in always rubbing her the wrong way, oftentimes on purpose, it was so much fun.

I wasn’t completely a fan of June’s reasons for avoiding relationships, but I loved the efforts Ryan made to court and convince her that he was worth it.

The multi-cast audiobook was done really well, with the banters delivered perfectly.

This one was okay. It was an enemies to lovers rom com, but I felt like I had higher expectations for it that it didn't live up to. It just wasn't as fun and easy to read as the previous book. I felt liked it dragged a little and just wasn't really as enjoyable as I hoped.
